  • I don't like the first technique. As an opponent scared of falling I would probably grab/hold anywhere I could, including the neck/face in that case. Could go very wrong.

  • This is the most useful aikido video i've seen yet.

  • Q ChIQUITO EL UKE!!! DEBE MEDIR 1,30 M!!

  • nice. Can this one be applied to strikes like chudantsuki or yokomenuchi, and can you make a vid of it? (upcoming test, would like to practice at home with dad.)

  • Nice!! Awesome :) Been an apprentice of apprentice, for me the hardest thing on Koshinage is getting my center below Uke's, in most of the cases (in our Dojo), Im the tallest... in this video Nage is taller than Uke but the technique is so well done that is not a problem XD God!! I have so much to learn!!! NICE!!! :D

  • nice flow

  • beautiful!!

  • nice vid, thanks!

  • I am considering learning Aikido. My PE teacher does class for it. His fees are cheaper than other dojos in my area.

  • thanks Stenudd Sensei. Great work as always. Your videos make a difference.

  • i think this throw is from judo.

  • Well, no need to give him a negative report for the comment. Judo has many exceedingly similar throws. I've done both Aikido and a very little bit of Judo, when I did a Koshinage the Judo instructor called it a such and such throw.

It's important to understand that Aikido was cultivated and not developed out of thin air. Morihei Ueshiba did not invent the hip throw. A generalized unstandardized system of Jujutsu was practiced in Japan for hundreds of years before either system was developed.

  • This throw is EASIER to perform on larger uke. It is the shorter ones that this throw becomes difficult.

  • Judo and wrestling are sports. This is a martial art. Never forget that. It's just difficult for non-Aikidoka to see and understand a kata and what is happening exactly. Therefore there is allot of flaming going on.

As said, this is way easier on bigger people since their center is higher.

In fact I know many budo martial artists who took up Aikido to get a better feeling at Judo, Jujutsu etc. and ended up being mainly Aikidoka.

  • @FinalKenny2 Judo is a martial art. I've been a long time aikidoka, and now judoka, jujutsuka. Judo is making my aikido better, and vice versa. I used to hear the "judo is a sport" meme all the time, and sorry, it's just not true.

  • @TheDivafnk Judo is very fearsome, no denying that. Especially on asphalt. But I guess you will agree, that the modern (mainsteam) judo is nothing compared to the traditional Kodokan or even what Jigoro Kano and some of his direct disciples taught. Just think of Joshi-goshinhō. Anyways, I wish you a great training.

  • what if your enemy is a sniper? how can you apply your aikido techniques?

  • Same thing, just hope he's next to you.

  • depends on how far away the aikido guy is from the sniper ^_^

  • All the throws in this vid have your back to uke's front. Are there koshinage variants where you and uke are back to back?

  • there could be, but they will be dangerous and even brutal... I personally haven't seen such performed.

  • There are such throws. They're a bit tricky to do, and uke lands on his feet.

  • @Aikidostenudd

i believe its called ganseki otoshi henka waza

i had it sprung on me once, frightening.

  • It's aikido AND judo :)

Many techniques in aikido are found also in other Japanese martial arts. They have a common origin.

  • Looks very similar to Judo almost like sode tsuri komi o goshi, I like this style its very circular.

  • good uke...has that Tomiki flavor..

  • nice side falls and good hip throws it's one of my favorite throws

  • I was about to call you insane :p We just started this technique in aikido class today, and it's freakin' scary to be thrown like that. Fun to throw, yes, but not to be on the recieving end :P

  • nice. what kyu/dan r u? im on 2nd kyu in ki-aikido. i used to go on aikido classes and when i started learnin this technique, i was rly rly scared too =)

  • just graded once, so i'm sixth kyu. Hopefully fifth in a couple of months :)

  • A lot of people do a lot of trash talking of Aikido, but I thought this was pretty good. I mean buddy is saying its no good against BJJ or kickboxing. This is not true. While you should do groundfighting and striking as well to complement these techniques, I have landed some hip throws(not this one)on people who were trying to strike at me (or grab me and hang on till I fall down).

  • mr sweet potato , some say , all matter is illusion, go figure .. did you know jesus?

  • You took aikido for 6 months and still don't understand a single aspect of it? Impressive!

  • zitstick,

I speak several languages. I am a very cunning linguist.

    Get popped

  • i wish i was that good a koshinage

well i am like half the size of everone else but still

my ukemi is ok but not great and i almost always drop my uke

  • To be shorter than uke is actually an advantage, as you can easily place yourself under uke's center. Try throwing without having uke lie on your hip - no body contact, almost like a kind of kokyunage.

  • being half the size its mainly the weight issue

but i'll give it a try it should be easeir thanks

  • About the weight issue, try to do koshinage without uke weighing down on your hip. Think of it as a kokyunage where you happen to be in front of uke - but go down really low. You should be like a fence in front of uke suddenly disappearing, and uke loses balance because of it.

  • Shorter than uke is actually an advantage to place the koshi, But it´s not an advantage to direction the hand that you grave. That is a BIG problem for a short man and UKE take advantage to go back and nage lost the necessary contact to do koshinage in traditional form.

I´m shorter and I know Shihan say me: "Sory: it´s imposible!!!, you must change; take the elbow or the back..."

  • MrSweetPotato, is English really your mother tongue?

  • I speak several languages. I am a very cunning linguist. What's your point?

  • Match an Aikido guy vs a Brasilian JJ guy, with Aikido rules, and the Brasilian JJ guy will win

  • BJJ is a great art. It's proven in the ring and damn effective. I respect the hell out of it and wouldn't want to tangle with an experienced student. That is why everybody it seems trains it nowdays. Is that what you wanted to hear? Seems you must feel insecure about it since you want to bash other arts. World is big enough for everybody to train the way they want. Do you train in BJJ!? Is somebody forcing your to go to Aikido classes or something? You have a fighting mind...sad.

  • I'm doing you a favor trust me & thank me gracefully. I get pissed when Aikido believers contradict me. I am rite ur wrong.

Aikido sucks, its a waste of time.

I wasted 6 months in Akido, and missed out on BJJ due to it. Don't make my misteak

  • Ok, I'm gonna drop out of Aikido and Muay Thai. What's the name and location of your BJJ dojo? I want to come train.

  • That's more like it. Great, good job, but just quit Aikido & keep the Thai. Anytime you are in NJ or MD I can meet you at Garfieldjj in Annapolis MD or bjj88 in Elkridge MD or Maater lloyds in Camp springs MD. I also fight alot of other places, what's best for you?

    Glad you are coming around

  • Not really. I was just patronizing you. I wanted to see what BJJ dojo would have you for a student. Your a great ambassador for them. I know if I ever meet a student from those dojos to ignore whatever they have to say as total rubbish. Cheers.

  • So the cheers & rubbish mean you are from GB. Well, I am visiting London in August, would you like to fight then?

Seriously, trade the bullshit Aikido for Brasilian jj. Even if you have not heard of ROYCE GRACIE or the UFC, do yourself this favor.

  • hey man.. hows it going? .. hehe.. you dont really believe in aikido do you?.. :)

  • MrSweetPotato, you must first understand the AIkidoka is not up for grabs, as the usual BJJ victim. He/she is not a sitting duck, but a constantly moving target that can throw you off balance.

There's video here on YouTube called "AIKIDO X JIU JITSU 2" (made by some Brazilian military personell on their day off). Watch closely for the Jiu Jitsu guy when he tries to approach the Aikido guy with the grappling techiques.

  • That video is people PRETENDING to fight. They are willing and compliant. That said, I noticed that the throws in this aikido video are the same as tsurikomigoshi and variations of seionage which I've seen completed, done myself, and had done against me in actual competitive situations in judo and BJJ too many times to count. The set ups are not very realistic, but the actual throws are good technique.

  • FYI- the first part of my response, I was responding to the comment about the Aikido vs. Jiu-jitsu video, not the video above.

  • Incidentally, the many, many ways you can do koshinage is really fascinating.

  • Completely ineffective as method of self defense....

There are two proofs it is fake.

    1) There are no real competitions (just choreographed demonstrations)

    2) If these wristlocks were real, then there would be dozens of broken wrists in every Ju-jitsu (real) and/or Judo (real) tournament.

I DARE ALL YOU AIKIDO GUYS TO 'roll' with the first Brasilian JJ belt ( a blue belt)

  • First of all, I don't see him presenting it as self defense. These throws are nicely executed. I don't practice Aikido, but I would guess the knowledge you gain about control and balance can be very useful in self defense.

  • My observation still stands, ineffective as self defense.

These 'throws' are really just one guy rolling when his wrist is touched. NOT THROWS! Watch Judo if you need to understand what a throw is......

You are wrong. I took Aikido, and the control is a worthless illusion and there is no emphasisis on balance against no resistance.

Wrong wrong wrong , oh you Aikido fans are sooooooo wrong.

  • This is not a demonstration of self-defence, this is a well-executed demonstration of variations of just one technique. Traditional aikido is non-competitive and arguably hard to guage in a "real" situation. Shodokan aikido, with its sports component, is probably the best example of putting aikido to the "test" in a controlled situation - judo and aikido are closely related!

  • Matching two of similar skill in their respective arts, under BJJ rules, an aikidoka would likely lose. This proves nothing, nor does anything need proving. I tire of such meaningless criticism.

  • What are BJJ rules? What are Aikido rules? For instance, would the Aikidoka be allowed to perform real-speed atemis to the BJJ fighter's neck? I think not.

  • You contradict yourself in your statements. Aikido/Ju-jitsu locks don't work, but you imply Brazillian Ju-Jitsu locks do!? I am an Aikido/Muay Thai guy, and have 'rolled' on the ground and still do. I get some tap outs, and had to tap out..now what!? I have had ligament damage in my wrist due to a Nikkyo put on a bit too hard! Your telling me the lock didn't work!?? For a fake lock it sure worked good.

  • Theres no freaking way, you can catch a judo/karate/bjj guy in nikyo, TRY IT ON THE GROUND!!

It is one of the more painfull twists, out of the first 5 you learn sure.. BUT ONLY IF YOU DO NOT RESIST!! And let it be done to you.

I bet you 100 dollars you cannot catch joe schmoe off the street in it, if you allow him to flinch..

WHY ARE THER NO NIKYOS IN JUDO, BJJ MMA contests?

  • Nikyo only works if two guys are standing still, facing each other and the defender is allowed to put his palm on your wrist, then you let himplace his other wrist on your forearm, and wait for him to crank..

YOU CANNOT usually EVEN get first touch in live sparring.

Try thsat on a JUDO guy, during standup randori.

  • You let yourself get the nikyo set in!! Nikyo only works if you stand there like an idiot and give your forearm away.

DONT TELL ME THAT IT HAPPENED DURING SPARRING!! Righyt? It was pre-arragned, 'OK, now do nikyo to me' correct?
