@kevinbaconisbest Because Bob Zemeckis wanted to kill two birds with one stone. In fact, up until that point, the only other time it had been done was with the first two "Superman" movies. The only difference was that Zemeckis didn't get fired from the sequel like Richard Donner did from "Superman II." Then again, I suspect Spielberg was easier to work with than the Salkinds--just barely.

I've always thought he might have added in that expression because of the events to come in the 2nd movie, where in the future they really are "assholes or something". When they made the first movie they didn't know there was going to be a sequel, but once they had a story outlined, they could add that expression in.

That was another strage point. Marty of 2015 IS an asshole because of his thing with being called "Chicken"

Yet nothing in the first movie remotely HINTED at Marty having such a problem. Why they just couldnt show 2015 Marty as actually becoming the superstar he was clearly implied to become instead of destroying his life. Why would they show that the hero was destined to live such a miserable life.

I mean I love the movies but the whole "Chicken" thing seemed out of the blue.

But that's a major plot point for the third film. After his brush with death facing Mad Dog Tannen, Marty actually learns he is being a jerk with his stubborn refusal to back down when called chicken. It's because of that one event, that at the end of the third film he doesn't play along with the road race and changes his future by not ramming the Rolls Royce... therefore destroying the original timeline that led to him being a loser. The future is once again fluid and unwritten.
