I first watched "STEEP" around 6 months ago, and have watched it many times since, although somehow, never got to the end of the film. So to me watching it made Doug Coombs one of my hero's. Until yesterday evening when I managed to finish the film, and discovered Doug Coombs had indeed, passed away. It was a shock to my system, and I am truly and utterly gutted. I am deeply sad right now, and cannot get Doug out of my head, a person who lived life on the edge, and in my opinion, he must have f
RIP Doug.. I remember getting up to Jackson Hole on NYE 2005 and getting on the tram.. Coombs was standing a foot away from me.. It was so cool to be sharing a tram ride to teh top of Rendezvous Mtn with a legend..
@iriwan: yes. First the Coombas, then Coomback, which are Coombas with the addition of a rocker, pretty much. A % of sale proceeds on these skis goes to the Doug Coombs Memorial Fund, courtesy of K2
My uncle roomed with Doug for 5 years when they first moved to Jackson. I have heard amazing stories from my uncle Walt, they were the best of friends. 24 hours of Aspen ski race was won by Doug.....while he was on acid....amazing.
@iriwan Ski accident in France in 2006, while he was stepping down from a rock trying to reach a fallen friend. The rock broke under his feet and he fell off to his death, which I believe was instant. His friend was still alive when rescuers reached him but died on the way to the hospital. RIP both of them. DC was a true legend
dougie was as good as they got. Never seen a smoother turn. One thing was always for sure: never judge a slope by how dougie skied it! He made it all look easy. RIP
Doug was one of my top 10 people to meet before I die. He possesses every quality I aspire to have... Complete originality, humility, respectful, and some serious testicular fortitude.
He died in the noblest of ways which will only cap his legendary career.
What was the song previous to this setting up such a great tribute to Doug? Where the Helo flies them in - I went through credits of "Off the Grid" and thought perhaps it was "Great Spirit" by SOFT?
It was the tune that started this segment.
Such a sad loss to a great dude that knew how to turn left and right and did it very fuckin well...
In my prayers Doug. You broke down barriers so rookies like me can experience what you lived.,
I am honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to ski with Doug during his Steep Camps in Jackson. Thankfully my life has never been the same since. He let the genie out of the bottle for me and I never fail to give thanks every time I boot up and click in. On that note the same goes for his amazing wife Emily. She showed me places in bounds around Jackson that I might not have found in many seasons of exploring. My gratitude is immense.
Doug was one of my parents best friends, they were with him when he died, RIP.
