  • Jesus Christ, that was awesome!

  • the movement's of face in every moment of opera that rappresent the states of being the her soul ,uau

  • The best Queen ever

  • Besides her incredible voice I think she's so damn hot!!

  • mamma mia........brividi ovunque....

  • I OFFICIALLY DECLARE MY LOVE FOR THIS GODDESS! Douglas from Houston - Texas.

  • @dchemaly396 Tell Rick Perry that instead.

  • @capitanzach You are nuts my friend. Keep up the good spirit! This is not a political forum LOL

  • Diana is just perfect, what a fantastic performer! She IS the Queen of the Night

  • damrau is absolutely fabulous

  • Sarastro sucks! The Queen of the Night must rule the world.

  • Absolutely magnificent. The last part of this aria must be phantastically difficult sing, even more so, perhaps, than Der Hölle Rache, although the latter is more demonic and ferocious.

  • I've been listening to this the entire day, can't get tired of it (nor can my neighbours)

  • Diana ist zweifellos die beste Königin der Nacht!

  • Muy bien lograda la escena; el trabajo corporal, aunado al vocal, hacen de este montaje uno de los mejor logrados de esta aria, bravo!

  • Simply the best!!!!!!!!

  • Eu me arrepio, toda vez que escuto esta Aria.

  • simplemente espectacular

  • the best queen of the night EVER!!!!!! she's got the voice, the notes, the acting and the beauty AMAZING!!!!!

  • @SofiCentes

i must disagree with beauty part, but the rest is true indeed :)

  • mmm...

  • I can't help but smile at 4:23 and on.

  • UNMATCHED nobody can't compare she really made this aria hers!!!!

  • The sheer complexity of this magnificent aria and this outstanding performance makes me sob and shiver at the same time. Damrau is wonderful!

  • блестящая актриса и певица!!!!!!!!!!!! Браво!!!

  • I sing Sarastro... and I think I'm in love with this woman. The bit with that meaty low note on "du willst der tochter rettet sein" gets me every time. Be still my heart.

  • é a melhor...tanto a voz quanto a interpretação, ninguém faz igual!

  • mi stupisco ancora di quanto sia straordinariamente in grado di controllare la sua vocalità, canta divinamente!

  • I watch every other "O Zittre Nicht" on YouTube, but everything just pales in comparison. She is UNMATCHED.

  • 65 people are unable to understand the beauty of this masterpiece :)

  • o my god this woman is great at this part. this is the most difficult and musically challenging role to play in opera. mozart would have been very happy with her performance.

  • @operalover1992

You are right. She is the Queen of the Night, Diana Damrau totally comitted to this fantastic role... unbeliviable

  • The Damrau bombshell!

  • SO AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What an honor it would be to see this live... sigh!

  • @MrBbminor If you mean the gradual increase in volume and then decrease on the same note or pitch, then the Italian for that is "messa di voce" . An attack with a gradual decrease in volume is a diminuendo. But, of course, she is doing these effects and much more--a magnificent interpretation.

  • her voice is a freaking laser beam!!!

  • Everything about Damrau is positively manificent! She has the amazing ability to have both the presence of her character and her divine voice! I maybe a novice when it comes to opera but this soprano is fabulous :D

  • I like more of Luciana Serra, but she's good to.

  • das beste was ich bisher gesehen habe

  • @MrBbminor Close; sforzando is just a strongly played, accented note. The term you're looking for, maybe, is a forte-piano (fp). Thats just a note that sounds loud at first, then backs away. Then again, I may be wrong. Maybe there's another term that I'm missing. But I know thats what a forte-piano is :D

  • How can´t you not like this??? I simply do not undesrtand. She is amazingly beautiful and her voice is just divine...

  • You can buy this entire performance on DVD. The first time, I watched it with English subtitles as I wasn't sure how much German I remembered from school. Turns out I can follow most of it, but you don't need to know word-for-word what's happening. Watched it several times since then. Wish I'd seen Diana Damrau live. Terrifyingly brilliant!

  • This performance is so real I want to cry. I wish I was there.

  • 3:31 onward is the best part imo. At 4:05,shit gets real, and the way she delivers those notes the three times, with a different emotion each time, is awesome.

  • I hope my neighbors enjoy this aria as much as I do...

  • Their interpretation is always unique...amazing...

  • 3:08 - 5:00 is the best! :)

  • Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja,

    Stets lustig, heisa! Hopsasa!

    Der Vogelfänger ist bekannt

Bey Alt und Jung im ganzen Land. ["Bey" is now spelled "Bei" hehe]

    Weiß mit dem Locken umzugeh'n,

Und mich aufs Pfeifen zu versteh'n.

  • Brava!

  • STUNNING

  • she is a good singer, but LUciana Serra is way better in this role. LUciana Serra is unparalleled. I like Diana Damrau, but she over-does the acting.

  • @lalindabahiana Luciana would sing this well in Spanish. Her German is lousy. Of course not Her fault. Diana has a high german that puts Her in the top (even for Germans). In terms of pure voice, Luciana has a high pitch, but she is old school. In my opinion she does not have a drop of dramatic style. What makes this performance and the all production so great, is that for the first time, The Magic Flute was performed as it should: with great acting. Concerning Dianas' voice: i do not hate it.

  • @lowemgrim I just listened to Luciana Serra and I wonder why the two have to be compared. Luciana sang this song ten years ago. Diana's speaking high German has nothing to do with anything because that would mean only German sopranos could sing this song perfectly.

  • @Perfidiame That is true. It was not my idea compare. Comparisons are what they are: matter of opinion. It was just a reply to someone. Concerning accent, I keep tain my opinion: germans do a better job so far. The words have a meaning that do not translate directly into english, or any latin language. Maybe Hungarian. And then only maybe. This said: for emotions to be true and for the music to be closely linked the right accent and pronunciation is a must. Sorry if I offend any latin person.

  • that is one awesome moon

  • *thunder rumbles

Tamino: O god, what is that?

Ladies: Prepare yourself! It heralds the arrival of the Queen.

    *music swells

    She comes.

    She comes!

    SHE COMES!

  • my fave aria from this opera

  • It's not only her fantastic voice: she has the whole "attitude" of a true Queen of the Night. This combination lifts this performance to the realm of fantastic.

  • Deus...obrigada! Que maravilha!

  • She looks so small on my laptop screen, but she still gave me chills when she walked out, now THAT is presence!!

  • 4:35 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Scrrrat I know, that gives me chills... insane

  • This deserves one of the highest compliments we as artists can receive in this world and that is simply, "Mozart would have been positively elated!"

  • Brava!! I continue to be slain by her every single time I see her perform die Königen von der Nacht! This Covent Garden production is the most accurate we have in our generation according to the findings of the Neue Mozart Ausgabe and has certainly set the bar high as a definitive mounting for professional productions of Die Zauberflöte to aspire to for many years to come! What I wouldn't give to be able to go back to 2003 and get to attend this! Bravi to all! File this under "operagasm!"

  • SuperJohnnykay has it. She's not sincere. That's why she acts this way. She is faking being the grieving mother. She can manipulate this guy to her evil ends. Hell, she could make me do anything in that costume!

  • Why in the world everything germans do they do it perfectly?

  • This is the Queen.

  • she was the best queen of the night ever!

  • @alaespsd No.

  • Absolutely magnificent ... the reigning Queen

  • she is the best

  • @ibijoy not quite

  • Better to listen without vidio ="= for my eyes are scared, but ears love it so much ==|||

  • @MsGEOLOVER 'Tis the point, yes? =)

  • Can't stop watching it over and over again - Diana Damrau is THE Queen of the Night!

  • check out the new, young, beautiful coloratura soprano Jeanette Vecchione - Donatti sing O zittre nicht on youtube! Just made her operatic debut at the Vienna State Opera at 26 years old!

  • Damrau is the best !

  • Spectacular staging - and what a passionate acting performance. I agree with ghtsw113 - she's in a class of her own; she's brought a very special talent to this. Thanks so much for posting this!

  • I wish I could afford tickets to see this devine singer :(

  • Diana Damrau 真的用盡感情在唱歌....

  • 3:35 du,du,du wirst sie zu befreien gehen,du wirst der Tochter Retter sein

amazing performance!mozart will be so proud.

  • ¡INCREIBLE!!! BRAVO!!!

  • you cant beat the best!

  • just ... amazing, the best interpretation that I've ever heard ;)

Je suis charmé par votre voix, si puissante et si douce à la fois, que de couleurs et d'émotions vous nous transmettez !

  • That deserves a standing ovation on its own. I feel distraught that i couldn't have seen that performance. (sniffles)

  • Absolutely brilliant performer!! Her "Lucia" at the Met two years ago astounded me! I hope to hear her there in "Rigoletto" in April.

  • i love you diana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 60 Leute sind meineTochter nimmer mehr.

  • My God, what an incredible good performance of mrs. Damrau

  • She is teh best Queen of the night ever. I compared every other opera artist to her and her emotion and position is the best.

  • she is INCREDIBLE. when she gets overcome by the emotion, then sees she might be noticed, and has to draw it back. She is perfect!

  • @pastybaby

Incredible, that's the right word !!! I wonder how come I hadn't heard of her before I came accross this video ...

  • just how good is this! Damrau is a truly evil and manipulative queen. The audience can see how the guileless Tamino is taken in by her lies. This raises the bar for all coluratura sopranos singing the role although I suspect that many will see this and simply pack it in. Brilliant!

  • I keep watching this video,,, the whole production is amazing, and she is simply brilliant, divine...

  • Everytime I watch this video I consider thinking of Diana Damrau as my favorite opera singer. She's insanely good. ♥

  • Once you've seen this, you'll never look at Lady Gaga in the same way again.

I hate how the GaGas and Biebers are considered 'artists' in this twisted world.

  • OH, the bit of coloratura begining at 4:25! She triumphs! She repeats it, but softer because she doesn't want Tamino to hear, and then finishes the thought, leaning forward toward the house-letting us in on her secret. Absolutely masterful!

  • Certified Intergalactic! Certified Intergalactic!

  • I love this interpretation of the character, and how Damrau clearly fleshes out the manipulation in this scene. It's beautiful how her queen always keeps an eye on Tamino to judge what will push him towards the reaction she wants and styles herself accordingly into the role that appeals to him the most.

  • Diana Damrau is simply phenomenal. I can't help listening again and again the two arias (Die Holle Rache and Zittre Nicht...) from this production, what a talent and performance!! Breathtaking, amazing, I am not sure what I like more - her voice or her act, both are simply out of this world...

  • @milanm711

Me too, i am addicted to the two performances of mrs. Damrau.

  • I have no clue what this is about, but I do know this is probably the best performance of opera I've ever seen. She's amazing....

  • Streich sang QONT until her lat 50s and Sills made all of us opera professionals want to commit suicide when she retired WAYYY to early...she could have gone on for years, like Lotte Lehmann who also quit too early. But I'll sure grant you that there's a dearth of good QONTS in the last few decades. DD could be one of the immortals if she would just bother getting someone to translate the words for her.--and then think about them a bit. If Anya makes it you heard it first here! All the best

  • @cantorga DD's mother tongue is German, so ...

  • @saiserieht Here's another one you might try, just for curiosity. Erna Berger. She's too sweet not at all majestic, sounds like your favorite great-aunt asking you for a favor. She had a virginal quality which made her a great Gilda but does not suit QONT.But at leastshe's pleading, not commanding. The German text, by the way is not set in the imperative "gehe sie zu befreien" but as a simple future "du wirst sie zu befreien gehen". These are nuances no one pays atention to and should.

  • @cantorga ummm...Damrau does sing "du wirst sie zu befreien gehen" here

  • It's a very nuanced perfomance. We discussed this exact performance in an Opera class I took in college, and my professor said he has never seen a more convincing and thrilling Queen. The lyics are ironic--over dramatic and way too personal and emotional for someone putting together a murder plot. I think DD read BETWEEN the lines and took the subtext...and hit it out of the ballpark! The Queen is a conniving b*tch, and should be portrayed as such.

  • I think that there is a lot more emotion in this piece than just simple sadness. She's clearly pretending to care...her recitative is done well, but it's so short that I think it's hard to throw in a lot of emotion. It IS done rather airily (as I think necessary)...and she totally milks it for all it's worth in the first part of the aria (where she tells the story of her daughter's capture). She's putting together a murder plot, so her alterior motives are showing through here.

  • And what is that I hear at 4:00? The strings are playing the melody from T's love song! This woman is STEALING his music right in front of him! Remember, she's not asking him to do this, she's tricking him into it with flattery and cunning.

Thus, the evil, self-centered performance DD pulls of is, in my opinion, the ONLY way to perform this three-tiered aria.

  • And one more comment (hahaha sorry), but if this was MEANT to be so introverted, WHY would there be SO many high notes (covering huge ranges!), so many changes in dynamics, KEY CHANGES, transitions, AND that ridiculous 30 second riff at the end? Hello, the vocals themselves tell you this piece should be alllllll about the Queen drawing attention to herself!

  • And, what better way to get him to agree to her plan than to entice him, flirt with him (after all, the first few lyrics are all about how great he is haha)? I don't think this piece needs to be as introverted as some do, but then again, that's my opinion.

I am glad that we all agree on her spell-binding voice, though...that is certainly something that shouldn't be up for debate HAHA ;]

  • telling us the whole time "look at me, look what I'm going to do next...see how I'm enticing him?" etc). It's her way of making the character stay true to inner being.

It's like a soap opera...over-dramatic. The Queen is mutli-dimensional and should not be subjected to just a few emotions throughout the opera. It's a very nuanced, calculated performance...and sometimes so calculated as to even show that the Queen is clearly faking it. This is a wonderful example of Dramatic Irony.

  • I think this is an absolutely beautiful rendition, and a fresher take on the role.

And as for lyrics, DD was born in Germany...her first language is German. So I'm almost CERTAIN she understands the lyrics...

I love her entertaining, flighty performance, and I don't think she was trying to scare him...I think she was trying to keep the darkness of the character intact, but show it to us and NOT T (i.e. that certain parts are an aside to the audience, and even though T is watching, she's

  • I don't really think she was trying to scare him. Personally, I've found that videos of opera performances seem to always be much more expressive than they do in the theater itself simply because we are seeing them nearly face-to-face. They must be more expressive on stage to make sure the audience feels it. Also, I think DD's turn was newer and a more modern twist on the character. She's flirting with him, with over-the-top dramatics, and even at times stares right at US, flirting with US.

  • non ho mai ascoltato una Regina della Notte così bella!!!

  • I think she's only scary because of that eyeliner.

  • The skillful singer can hit the high note in that song quite easily.

  • she's so great but this isnt even close to her best performance of this piece

  • You can feel the evil behind the false promises she made to Tamino

  • @MasterBroki I just realised something... the way Damrau enunciates the coloratura and the way she acts makes me think the Queen had a marvelous idea to use Tamino to her advantage.

  • @Hailstormand In a way, yes, but she knew that Tamino wouldn't be controled very long. Good persons always finish to see the good in others, so he did with Sarastro. I'm pretty sure that the Konigin wanted prevent this, so she turned to Pamina to force her to do the dirty job...

  • è possente e aggressiva.. nel bene e nel male. manca solo che ci pensi da sola ad affettare sarastro, pamina, tamino e l'uccellaccio che si porta al seguito!

  • this is the true queen of the night

  • You can have her and her corny facial expressions and overdone theatrics. In Italian we call that "prosciutto" acting. Then her wobble. Did anyone ever tell her that elbowsare part of the arm? I'll take Streich or Sills any time. Hell, I'd even take Pons. Or Galli-Gurci, if she had ever done it. Unacceptable

  • @cantorga:well, you have an opinion and you have every right to it! Its not a popular one as is evidenced by the majority of Youtube viewers who view Diana more than any other QON. and write positive comments..She has a multitude of admirers for her characterisation, expression and voice.I am one of those who enjoy her performance. Sorry you wont be joining us.Enjoy your listening, elsewhere. Happy trails.

  • @cantorga Sorry you can't accept her acting. Since you're here, then you should know that this is one of the hardest roles in any opera. Just remember, you're the one who's watching her, and thank the stars that the role is not reversed. Wonder what would she say if she sees you doing this role, and failing miserably.

  • @Hailstormand It is not one of the hardest roles in any opera. It is one of the hardest-to-sing roles- She basically has two appearances with her histrionics, then shows up again briefly at then end. I have made my lifilhood for 40 years singing then coaching many opera parts, including this. In this aria she is trying to enlist Tamino's help in rescuing her daughter. What it seems like she's doing is scaring the poor schmoe shitless. AS A PROFESSIONAL, this is unacceptable. Read lyrics.

  • @cantorga :Hello again.Got it that you dont like DD in QON- at least this part. Question. You mentioned you liked Streich & Sills.Their performances are 40 yrs old-so in the last 40 yrs who has performed this to a standard you are happy with?I cant find a better performance than Dianas on Youtube, of the recent sopranos! But, please inform me if you have found otherwise.

  • @SuperJohnnykay She would be fine..got the voice for it...but if she'd just read the lyrics!! -she is trying to enlist then help of this young man in a life-and-death mission,l and the way to do that is not to scare the pants off him!! Streich and Sills had all the nobility you could ask for--but you could also hear a mother's breaking heart, which I don't from DD. She needs a dramatic coach, certainly not a singing teacher! It's still Streich and Sills! No one equals them in the last 40!

  • @cantorga :OK, cantorga, I get what you are saying! The second aria, in which, The Queen gives little Parmina a tongue-lashing is more Dianas style of acting because it is very extroverted. With this first aria, tha acting needs to be more internal, more reflective.I will see if I can search out some other renditions on Youtube and observe the acting.Onre thing I have observed is this aria seems to be less popular, yet is most probably harder to perform due to its subtlety.

  • @cantorga You're right, Die Hòlle Rache is much more in her style! If you have it, take a look at the Bergman film from '75. The QOT there, while possessing nowhere near the vocal skills of the ladies we've been discussing, nonethlsss has studied the texts! The difference between the two arias is astonishing! But then I always find Bergman astonishing and consider that film of his a masterpiece from 1st to last frame. World's greatest Papageno!!! And three girls instead of the boys...genius!

  • @cantorga :I guess with the Bergman film , it is a matter of getting over ones prejudices. Not only is it Mozart done in Swedish, but Mozart in Finland Swedish instead of High German. Then, Brigit Nordin was chosen as the Queen. She couldnt reach the F6 so Stockholm soprano, Ulla Blom dubbed in and she whistle registers it poorly and the triplet sounds like a squeaking mouse.Still, many people in Scandinavia had this as their intro to Mozart and appreciated it for its internalising dramatics.

  • @SuperJohnnykay Just exactly what I'm saying. Vocally inferior but so much into the character that it's what becomes important. Streich and Sills had both qualities. DD just a great voice--NEVER ENOUGH!!!! Pavarotti had a great voice--but who can bear to listen to him? The ARTISTRY in Bergman's film remains unsurpassed. Keep your ears peeled for a little soprano named Anya Kremer..I'm coaching her in QONT now for her debut in Australia in March--she has it all...but that's no guarantee.

  • @cantorga :Anya Kremer!! Will keep eyes and ears open for her. There needs to be some up and coming sopranos. I like Nat Dessay, Pat Petibon, A Netrebko,DD they are getting into their 40s not that that is old for a soprano, but it seems to be for a soprano performing the Queen, right!?

  • @cantorga "You" find that "you" "think" that "words" in the libretto says something about movement music or movement acting, but none "of" "the" procedures (that "you" find and "think" that "are" "thoughts") "you" "make" can really, deeply, alter, corrupt, "the" perfection "of" one-being "that" "is" being felted... Any artist "that" immerse deeply "in" pure movement and by "it" destroys any "attempt” of ent-ification" and "in" "this" pure movement finds some approximation "on" "the" material...

  • ...("continuing")..."that" "is" one-being ([That “do” not “come” from “Mozart”, because “Mozart” “doesn’t” “exist”] "that" "do" not "have" "principles of permanence" "in" "it-self" and "that" "do" not really can "be" "controlled" neither "possessed" by any-one-being) achieve perfection and glory, and "this" "true" artists "do" not "are" more "them" "selfs" "in" "them" "selfs", and none mortal neither the gods can dispute “this” “right”...

  • Certified Intergalactic! Hail Damrau!

  • This is just Magnificent!!!!

  • miss Damrau"s interpretation is thrilling.its breathtaking to listening her angelic voice. and performance has the dark and gothic atmosphere.the best zauberflote i"ve ever seen

  • omg omg i could cry

  • It's a grade A preformance anyway

  • is it just me, or is her high note a bit sharp?

  • @01BroadwayMagic

OH HUSH AND LET THE REST OF US ENJOY!!!

  • @exark666 I was just wondering... But I believe this this aria is PURE PERFECTION!!!

  • @01BroadwayMagic It is...

  • I think even Mozart himself would be proud of this performance.

  • Whenever I listen to Damrau, she always seems to make each passage so much more interesting and musical than what i've heard....parts of the music become favourites that i've never even noticed before. She is a monster.

  • Mozart dude what were you thinking? How could this be? Is it really human can do this? WOOOOW OMGAAASH

  • i've never listened to her before, she's pretty majestic. i like her lol to say she's got a beautiful voice is putting it pretty mildly lol

  • I really would like to see the part where Pamina is about to kill herself but is stopped by the boys from this performance

  • I find her voice very harsh and not the nicest to listen to, but wow, can she ever act! Her technique is great too! I can't help but like her!

  • @Shekhina01 Her voice is very clean to me, could be the recording or your speakers. I have this DVD and it is perfect..to me:))

  • she have a amazing feeling about the performance ,she LIVE the performance she is absolutely THE QUEEN !!

  • Diana Damrau is, in my opinion, in a class of her own as the Queen of the Night. Her range is outstanding and her acting makes the performances absolutely unforgettable. A wonderful experience.

  • @ghtsw11 yes you are absolutely right. she is such an amazing and beautifu singer!!!

  • She is just amazing!

  • @ghtsw11 her queen is indeed very good, but i find her acting terrible. fake and exaggerated. dont care though as long as she sings that well!:)

  • @twilightdewdrops it is an opinion. And most respected as such. But from the "story behind" I think she does impersonate the true character of this personage - you certainly get it right if you fake!

  • @twilightdewdrops :The storyline here is the Queen is persuading Tamino to go get her daughter back from Sarastros group. She is being manipulative, exaggerating her sense of concern and just sucking this poor young prince in to meet her hidden agenda. She is a schemer and she is playing him to the hilt.Does the queen here do a good job of convincing this young prince to go and get Pamina? Yes and no-he goes up there, gets interested & stays and the Queen is furious-enter QON 2 Vengeance aria.

  • @SuperJohnnykay bingo...as said...she is fake, and if in most of the performances I saw this part is taken out, only to be revelead on the seconds' queen aria, in here, the acting gives us a hint on what is realy happening: a woman starving for power. Nevertheless, she also suffers for not having her daugther nearby...to some extent...

  • @lowemgrim :I think youve got it right!! The power is her primary concern. Her daughter is a secondary thing.

  • @twilightdewdrops holy butthead that's what opera is!! that's what acting is!!! totally exaggerated emotions to engulf you in the intensity.

but yea i agree her technique isnt the best but she's still amazing to listen to

  • @FongioHELS In what do you base your opinion about Her technique here? Have you listen to the original key and tune? Do you see the difference here? Does she accomodates this one? Strange...
