It is wonderful to know about such a building which is not only getting maintained every year, but also brings together a community. Never thought that maintaining/plastering a building can be a cultural activity.

Well as a WHITE (HAHA, coz its me skin color) Norseman I do enjoy the building feats of man, I was actually looking for building plans to make a sweet and neat model of this place. I do awe this place it seems to bring people together and has great cultural power.
Now cut this thread some slack, its outright disgusting to come here and see national judgement on that scale, You cant hold a country responsible for a magazine srsly..
Islam HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OT TIMBUKTU. The Africans just converted to Islam & added the RELIGION to their customs that was all ready in place. Islam is the 1 of the worlds NEWEST RELIGION adopted by the worlds OLDEST people.
People seem to allow the arabs to claim that they were the foundation of architecture/literature/religion in Africa etc.
The arabs are as much the enemy -MORE even!-- of Africa as any European. It's a mistake to let them get away with lies like that.
The Djenne mosque was not originally a mosque. It was a palace. It was only after the locals converted to Islam that it was renamed a mosque, and a few small cosmetic changes made.
