You would also be expected to hire local people to drive for you, cook for you, clean your house for you. As a foreigner you will live like a king.
I'm not saying this is right or wrong. It is how it is. I don't live in Jakarta, I visit now and then and I'm making an observation. U can only visit here for 30 days then you leave.

I asked one of my friends here and he thinks you can buy an extension to the 30 day visa-on-arrival at the airport when you arrive but I'm not certain if that's true. just like darkhadz said, we Indonesian Chinese have been living in indonesia much2 longer than 60 years ago. 1940's was just the modern time exodus. many of us came when South East Asia was a trade centre, either as a merchant or as a coolie in trading vessels. even longer before the Europeans came in, some Chinese came from political contact between ruling kingdoms.
FYI, 1940's immigrants are usually very poor when they came.

i am a chinese indonesian... and i can see where most of the natives are coming from. they see the chinese as rich... and we are. But I don't think that we are rich because we cheat (again, there may be exceptions, as in any situation). I blame the economic problems of the corruption of the government. Change the government, we can change the economy. it has nothing to do with the chinese trying to take take take. we are just running a business too. my family back home are no where near rich!
