  • Im in love for GDO

  • great videos dude but your voice sounds so boring

  • Why isn't Gnome Do supported for 10.04?

  • Cheers buddy. That was very helpful ;)

  • GNome-do have updated there shit! haha yes m8 :D

  • I prefer Krunner. It's not GNOME :P

  • very nice shot. what is your screencast software? is it a kdenlive recordmydesktop combo?

  • You can just drag and drop launchers from the main menu to the launcher for apps to stick to the dock.

  • The G is silent in Gnome.

  • @eqspec76 In the word gnome, yes. However when referring to GNOME, the desktop environment, it is pronounced with a hard G because the first letter in the acronym stands for GNU which is pronounced with a hard G. I know it's very wierd....

  • I hear ya. I stand corrected.

  • @eqspec76, Gnome is a Desktop environment in Linux. The G is not silent. Don't ask me why, thats just the way it is.

  • It's just like QuickSilver on OSX. I'm glad to see something like this on Linux.

  • + more cpu usage :)))

  • @nadiritus running a quad core, hardly an issue lol

  • what happened to your love of "easystroke" gestures?

  • puppy linux is pretty awesome, but i use ubuntu more

  • Hello! I am using MInt 7. I would like to use the Mac like doc on my system, however when I try to follow your steps & I open preferences & click on display I get this message. Your display is not properly configured for theme and animation support. To use these features, you must enable compositing. Am I doing something wrong? Or leaving something out?

  • Theres are some of the things

    1. Install video card drivers?

    2. Enable Compiz

    or composition layer

    (System, Preferences,mintDesktop)

  • what is a good media player with equlizer for the ubuntu

  • Can I have link to that wallpaper on your desktop?

  • how do you get gnome do? your links dont work

  • hi, i want to know how can i have the "mac top bar" in ubuntu. i mean, the bar that changes depending on the app you have open.. like when you are on the desktop it says:"Desktop File Edit View Places Help" and when you are on the winff it says "winff file edit options help"

  • search global menu

  • guh-nome haha

  • YOU ARE SO BOORING

  • take a nap then

  • Dont you hate the boring comment....too many sir too many.... lol

  • @gotbletu I didn't think you were boring. You explained it well. I already used Gnome-do, and was wondering if there was any way to get some plugins other than the clock and trash...I'm thinking stacks and volume control and wifi...

  • @gotbletu I think you're awesome

  • @gotbletu you're awesome

  • hmmm why would you want application to do something that is allready included in gnome (tip. Alt+F2) ? yeah dock is cool but can you put your custom icons in it? and can you remove the feuture to put all the apps you used in to a gnome-do dock

  • im guessing u havent use it b4

  • yeah i havent..like your vids tho...

  • WHY??? how about you have to type the whole application name with Alt+F2 and it doesn't have a preview, OK

  • What is on the left of your screen ?

  • could you please help me, i am new to linux and when i try to change the themes in gnome do i can't see docky, what could i do??

  • u need to enable composite manager for metacity or compiz fusion, look thru my videos for those if u want to know

  • Hi, nice review. Convinced me that I had to check out gnome-do and I am glad I did so.

I was about to mention that you don't need compiz per se but a compositing manager, then I saw someone already did and you're vid on it, again well done.

  • boring

  • take a nap then

  • Nice easy to follow review, good job . THANKS

  • There is a software compositor in metacity that can rock both docky and avant. It's accessable in the gconf-editor under metacity / general / compositing manager. I use that on my laptop that can't run compiz.

  • cool i gotta check that out

  • thanks for vid man

question: do you have nvidia or ati card?

  • i have an nvidia 7600gt right now, but going to get an ATI 3850

  • My advice is don't. Ati drivers are pure crap for ubuntu (and mint since it's the same). I have laptop with hd 3470 and HD doesn't work, and even avi video sux. Trust me if you paln to stick with linux skip ati. Ati says they are working on that. In 2009! Working on the stable driver? Fuck ati I hope nvidia buys them and close them down like they did with 3dfx. Google the web, it's a long term problem. Only temp solution is to turn off Compiz (so bye to effects and awn).

  • hehe yes im aware of the ATI linux problem but ill try it out

  • On my desktop with 1.9 ghz athlon xp, 1.5 gig ram and fx5600, ubuntu 8.04 EVERYTHING works.

    Even HD.

And on ati laptop, no HD.

    My advice go with nvidia.

  • My 2600XT and 4870 have had no problems with ATi's official drivers...

  • u got the EnvyNG drivers?

  • little more info?

    which driver are you using?

are you on ubuntu 8.10 or something different?

  • Well, I used the 8.12 and the 9.1 from the ATi site(i haven't updated to the most recent yet).

    I tried it on x64 8.04 and Xubuntu 8.10.

This site: wiki(DOT)cchtml(DOT)com, is an unofficial wiki for installing ATi drivers on multiple linux OSes, and is kept up to date.

  • I've also had problems with ATI drivers, the worse one was upon playing a DVD in full screen mode with compiz enabled the whole movie played in slow motion! I turned compiz off and it played fine. ATI really do need to get their act together. Did you get any flickering effects when playing a video clip though Totem or VLC media players? I found a way of fixing that problem which is only present when compiz is enabled. I've done a couple of vids about fixing that particular problem.

  • Yes I have problems with totem and vlc. I'll check out your videos.

    thanks.

  • I have no problems with the open sourece radeon drivers when compared with the proprietry drivers.

Maybe you should try them instead?

  • I wouldnt even try, from what I have seen to install the open source ATi or nVidia cards you need a degree in computer science just to install them! For me some things in Linux are just far too complicated.

  • In the latest ubuntu the open source ati drivers are default and are brilliant.

You dont have to do anything to install them you just install the OS.

  • Nice one :-) I'm all for an easy life lol I'm currently using Jaunty beta but am using an nVidia card, when I have time I'll try out the ATi card. Do you get some slight flickering on videos when compiz is enabled? I get that using the nVidia card, when I turn compiz off no problems.

  • Yeah I'm running jaunty aswell.

With my x1950 I have absolutely no problems with compiz on best settings etc. (my card is a few gens behind)

I do have some mouse artifacts in a small virtical line on the screen, but I have an unusual desktop area (3200 x 1080) which is outside the cards supposed maximum resolution (2560 x 1600) so I assume this is where the actual cards buffer and X buffer overlap but its un-noticable in normal use.

  • Oh and with a single screen (1920x1080) its perfect.

Docky is so much better than AWN in performance and look, its my new favorite app!

  • Great review, I love gnome do!

  • Spotlight does this too :D I think this is the future of opening applications. Its faster and easier.
