nice handling and good video . allways remember Turn on Acethylen first , and cut off acethylen first . its the most easy way , and the most safe way . people think they can handle to turn the nobs and mix oxygen and acethylen in the right mix and ignite , but allso educated blacksmiths and skilled metal workers pop the flame and making backslash into the tubes , and in worst case into the acethylen tank without you knowing it course most people forget to feel the tank with theres hands.
Any tips for "washing" off a nut from a bolt, please?? I just started my "Level-C" welding class, and I'm having a very difficult time doing this... thanks!
Ok thanks man, used one once years ago but need to understand starting one up. So it's just crank the oxygen up, then the acetylene a little...then turn the other oxygen knob until the black smoke disappears?
Good stuff man, I bought that harbor freight torch set you recommended in another video, and I honestly can't see a difference from the victor I learned with.
it's a chemical process, at the portion where it is to be cut is actually made to oxidize under the action of flame with the following reaction (iron+oxygen ---->black iron oxide + heat)
@MrWhatthemonkey I Dont remember but you only need #5 glasses or shield. sometimes I wear my welding mask when I cant find the glasses and leave it on grind mode but I don't know if that's ok or not.
@MrWhatthemonkey After a long period of use it can in fact hurt your eyes I've oxyfuel cut plenty of times without eye protectin but ANSI wants you to wear a 3 to 6 shade filter lens when oxyfuel cutting
@MrWhatthemonkey Yes since you are welding or cutting metal its a good idea to where safety glasses or a mask so the sparks does not get into your eyes. And wear leather gloves aswell.
the black stuff is called soot, the molden beads that hang off the bottom of the metal is called slag (you dont want that because it takes time to clean it) and turn of the torch A before O, Acetylene off, Oxygen off.
@driftinthroughtime you shut the oxygen off before the acetylene dumbass...the oxygen could be left on a bit if u do it backwards...make sure the oxygen is off first then the acetylene
@driftinthroughtime if u shut the acetylene off first the oxygen could have a small leak...turn the oxygen off first then the acetylene means u r sure both r shut off fully...how bout u explain y its the other way for an idiot like you
@12peter96 dude, there are different brands that have different ways of shutting down the torch. for example; Victor Cutting is a brand that gives instructions for shutting oxygen valve first. The torch i use, you're suppose to shut acetylene off then oxygen.
@driftinthroughtime ok...in my welding class my teacher, who has been welding and using torches for the past 30 years says we should shut the oxygen off then the fuel off
@12peter96 sry dude ur teacher was right 30 years ago but times have changed just like the world has, because of a study a couple years back they found if its A before O, theres less chance of burning occurring inside the torch head, havent u noticed if its O before A it leaves behind a small flame? does that seem right to you?
@driftinthroughtime lol sry to be that guy but when the slag is created by gas its actually called dross, slag is the byproduct of arc welding...the more you knowwwww.
I turn off my torch acetylene first then oxygen, i notice that when i turn off oxygen first it pops or sometimes there is alittle flame left, and i dont feel like blowing my self up
I am taking a very chalenging welding class for school, but since I started watching your vids I found alot of helpful tips and stuff. I just subscribed, just make sure to keep posting more videos.
This is what the cutting torch does: Rust metal. Rusting is oxidizing. Oxidizing happens faster when the metal is warm, and also faster with oxygen added. The torch warms up the metal, then adds oxygen when you push the lever. What then happens is an instant rusting process, rusting straight trough the metal at an incredible speed. This is why this does not work on metals that don't rust, like copper and aluminium. The results with these metals is a melting process, rather than a cutting process
3:44 You're right, it is literally burning the iron. However, it works better when the metal is molten and can also be flicked out the back.
The guy below me is correct with regards to lighting a torch.
If I was buying a new set from someone like Harris, it'd be a tough call between that and plasma. Plasma is far cleaner, easier and safer for sheet and thin plate. Oxy/acetylene is really best for stupid thick wrecking work; e.g. 6" thick. The cylinders and gas cost of it can be painful!
Forget using Acetylene or propane. these are old technologies that are on the way out. Acetylene prices have sky rocketed since the carbide plant blew up a few months ago. Check out a Petrogen Gasoline Torch. Much Safer, Gas is Cheap, and it works a whole lot faster. It has boosted my profit margins significantly at my scrap yard.
Sorry to be the one to correct you but I have worked in the compressed gas industry for twenty years. If I heard you correctly you said to first open your O2 lines and then open and light the acetylene. This is incorrect. You open the acetylene first slowly and light. Then you open the O2. O2 does not burn it is an oxidizer.
@spacebrdcst thanks for the thought but people should only click them if they are interested in the product. If someone gets too many clicks they can lose their adsensemoney for the whole day or until it gets straightened out. I will make some more vids anyway when our burn ban is over. Thanks again
when will you guys learn that its proper name is raw iron or steel i get annoyed sometimes when i hear people say oh i was cutting metal with a cutting torch....
@freddytk421 which is the best option for for cutting thick thick metal ( more than 4 inches..... a 100 am plasma cutter or oxy- acetylene??? How long will it take with a plasma cutter than with the oxy torch???
@runhorun I've never used a plama strong enough for that. They would cost tons for sure. Its easy to cut 4 inces deep with a big torch. I'm not sure but I don't think 100amp would cut 4 inches very easy. You would need a monster nasa compressor probaby. I'm guessing.
@freddytk421 where could i buy the equipment to practice? I need the oxy acetylene tank, the torch, and the torch cords. Where do you recommend to to buy these things?
@freddytk421 Hey I subbed. Where could I get used bottled of oxygen acetelene and a torch that is affordable..... or what is the best torch to cut faster if I had to spend the extra few bucks?
@sparklerbombg it should be pretty cheap under 50 at the most.. the money starts flowing when you rent tanks and stuff like that but a refill/exchange isnt to bad
you have a really steady hand. this is by far the best oxyacetylene cutting vid on youtube, anyway i was wondering what you have your regulators set at when Cutting, i havent cut in a while and ive been practicing on 1/4 flat steel and when ever im cutting the molten puddle will bond back together after my torch pass in some spots and my cut is really wide and not uniform... any advice.
you know instead of having to deal with all that black shit flyin out the nozzle just turn the upper oxygen nozzle on a tiny crack first then open the acetylene nozzle a little bit more then strike it and it will already be pretty much at the kind of flame you want ...i like it better that way then doing only the acetylene first then having to see that black shit fly around before turing on the oxygen...just do them at the same time and boom...practically ready to go right then and there.
3:35; Your not burning the metal, its a chemical reaction called Oxidation. Carbon steel melts at around 1500 degrees celcius, but Oxy cutting doesnt (shouldn't) exceed 950 degrees, (ignition temperature)
3:35; Your not burning the metal, its a chemical reaction called Oxidation. Carbon steel melts at around 1500 degrees celcius, but Oxy cutting doesnt (shouldn't) exceed 950 degrees, (ignition temperature)
the mixture between oxygen and acetylene actually creates a rapidly accelerated form of oxidation is why when the oxygen is added the metal just blows away. im only 19 but ive been welding and cutting since i was 9.
@clarencestanley ...... wow, sorry but when you pull the trigger the oxygen pressure just pushes out the molten metal thats it. its just like a controlled form or melting
@BeeRich33 you cannot cut aluminum like this. you can cut aluminum angle iron easily with a normal hack saw or reciprocating saw. wear safety glasses.
@freddytk421 i know this is kindof a stupid question but why i s it called angle iron when its made out of aluminum so why isnt it angle aluminum or for steel angle steel?haha but im serious
Now I'm watching with sound and I hear you explaining it including the cutting lever. Before I watched it without sound (just brought my headphones now to use), so I didn't hear it. I just went by what I saw, and I'd expected to see a HUGE HOT blue white bright flame when the oxygen was pressed.
@BenHutchinson1 That's cool. Most people turn the oxygen up too much and the cuts come out real sloppy when that happens. Thats the main problem people have is too much oxygen.
wow, usually when i see people cut it an oxygen acetylene torch its really sloppy and ugly, you cut better with this than most people do with a plasma.
A quick tip to anyone that is cutting for the first time. When you cut do not hold the torch at a 90 degree angle to what you are cutting. You want to slightly angle the torch so that the heat travels in the direction you are planning to cut.
Also, the thickness of the material you are cutting determines speed. The thicker the material the slower you should move, this allows the torch to cut all the way through the material instead of throwing slag into the tip of the torch from a shallow cut.
@lilsouthernbell20 It depends on what kind of torch you are using. If you have a victor manual read it because your way is wrong. either way it wont blow up so stop being such a puss ok welder man.
Great vid, Freddy. Hey, I picked up a "used" [customer returned] welding set up from an E bay seller Tadd Wholesale Supply which sells a lot of Harbor Freight customer returned items.
Check it out. I paid $60, including shipping, for a complete set up like you have here. All I need are the tanks and gas. I have a question.
If all I want to do is use the torch for heating, say a rusted bolt, so I can remove it, can I do that with only the acetylene?
@CoolasIce2 you would need a special tip that draws air in. It would take longer. If it's really thick it may take forever to heat up. Oxygen is cheaper than acetylene. So you may want to use oxygen with it to save time and money. Some people braze and solder with acetylene alone but it's not as good IMO. The best thing for heating cost wise is using propane or LPG and oxygen.
Very nice video! Your abilities far surpass my own. check out my how-to's if you would, and please leave a comment. (advise is always welcomed in the form of "Constructive (I suck) Criticism" :-D) thanks for the vid, i'm sure a lot of people will benefit from it.
Great video!.... so how do you adjust the oxygen and acetylene PSI on the regulators to where you would normally set it at? Is 35-45 PSI on oxygen and acetylene regulators alright?
@freddytk421 depends on the thickness, but i use 5 to 10 on acetylene, and 20 to 25 on oxygen, that will work from thin to half inch or so. something to put in your video, that if your diaphram is not working so you cannot adjust the pressure, your just wasting alot of gas, have seen that happen alot. maybe you have that in a video, just wanted to mention it. great video though, keep it up.
@pROTPANDA It depends on how big the torch and tip are. this is a 0 tip so It can cut 3/4 inches easily. some bigger tips can cut several inches. you can also get really small tips to cut sheet with if you want to.
@vochitoken This only cuts steel and iron. Plasma cuts everything. You can get started with this cheaper but plasma is cheaper in the long run. you would need a really expensive plasma cutter for thick steel but oxy-acetylene cuts really thick steel no problem. the oxy torch heats the metal more than the plasma so you will get warpage and other heat related problems if you are not careful like hardening.
Awesome video dude! Today I practicing my stick welding with that small HF arc welder. Getting ready for that railing project. I got the steel delivered today.
Very cool, thanks for the overview!

@wsmikey all but for really thin, but you could use clippers for that thin. you do need different tips and pressures for different thicknesses.
freddytk421 1 year ago
are you pre-heating the metal befor you start cutting ? or do you just start out heating the starting place red hot then add more oxygen??
wsmikey 1 year ago
@wsmikey just heat it up a little not glowing hot. you don't really even need to preheat but I do a little. starting place does have to be glowing

@freddytk421 AKA the kindling point... but excellent video... do you do a lot of bevelling for pipe?

Is this method used for aluminum as well? Can I avoid getting an acetylene setup for normal aluminum and steel angle iron?
BeeRich33 1 year ago
@BeeRich33 you cannot cut aluminum like this. you can cut aluminum angle iron easily with a normal hack saw or reciprocating saw. wear safety glasses.
freddytk421 1 year ago
@freddytk421 i know this is kindof a stupid question but why i s it called angle iron when its made out of aluminum so why isnt it angle aluminum or for steel angle steel?haha but im serious
CCSinventions 1 year ago
@BeeRich33 i know when you weld aluminum you have to use arigon..

wow man very clean cut
thuminbum 1 year ago
Uh . You forgot to pull the trigger. to make it super hot (the oxygen trigger). You just kept cutting with the preheating flame! NOOB!
BenHutchinson1 1 year ago
@BenHutchinson1 Do you know what your talking about? look again, retard.
freddytk421 1 year ago
@freddytk421
BenHutchinson1 1 year ago
@BenHutchinson1 That's cool. Most people turn the oxygen up too much and the cuts come out real sloppy when that happens. Thats the main problem people have is too much oxygen.
freddytk421 1 year ago
@BenHutchinson1 lol your an idiot, did you not notice how clean his cut was? it wouldnt cut if there was no oxygen
thuminbum 1 year ago
@thuminbum
I never used a cutting torch before. So everything your telling me here is new to me.

@BenHutchinson1 preheat flame dont cut,, i mean it could,,, just 10X longer

Hey man I am bearly 15 years old and i am taking a welding class in school....
The thing is that when i try to cut a piece of metal ..the metal never falls off...i have to hit it with a hammer....!!!!! what am i doing wrong
Zuneowner 1 year ago
@Zuneowner you probably have the oxygen up too much.
freddytk421 1 year ago
@Zuneowner same here i suck at oxy fuel welding and cutting stick welding is a lot easyier and stronger ( it s the type of welder i own lol)
6013welder 1 year ago
wow, usually when i see people cut it an oxygen acetylene torch its really sloppy and ugly, you cut better with this than most people do with a plasma.

freddytk421 1 year ago
A quick tip to anyone that is cutting for the first time. When you cut do not hold the torch at a 90 degree angle to what you are cutting. You want to slightly angle the torch so that the heat travels in the direction you are planning to cut.
Also, the thickness of the material you are cutting determines speed. The thicker the material the slower you should move, this allows the torch to cut all the way through the material instead of throwing slag into the tip of the torch from a shallow cut.
RegainTruth 1 year ago
you cut the acetylene off first if not it can cause flames to go back down in your torch im a welder i know
lilsouthernbell20 1 year ago
@lilsouthernbell20 It depends on what kind of torch you are using. If you have a victor manual read it because your way is wrong. either way it wont blow up so stop being such a puss ok welder man.
freddytk421 1 year ago 5
@lilsouthernbell20 thats what my teacher tells me, shut off fuel first and turn on fuel first then Oxy.

Thanks.
CoolasIce2 1 year ago
@CoolasIce2 you would need a special tip that draws air in. It would take longer. If it's really thick it may take forever to heat up. Oxygen is cheaper than acetylene. So you may want to use oxygen with it to save time and money. Some people braze and solder with acetylene alone but it's not as good IMO. The best thing for heating cost wise is using propane or LPG and oxygen.
freddytk421 1 year ago
@freddytk421 OK Thanks for the info.

NightOwl417 1 year ago
@NightOwl417 I have a video doing that I set on 5 psi acetylene and 20 oxygen here.
freddytk421 1 year ago
@freddytk421 depends on the thickness, but i use 5 to 10 on acetylene, and 20 to 25 on oxygen, that will work from thin to half inch or so. something to put in your video, that if your diaphram is not working so you cannot adjust the pressure, your just wasting alot of gas, have seen that happen alot. maybe you have that in a video, just wanted to mention it. great video though, keep it up.
joemcmurtrey 1 year ago
@joemcmurtrey 7 is the most you need to use on acet. 10 is pushing it but 15 makes the acetylene unstable.
DLEWIS488 1 year ago
@NightOwl417 dude your lucky you havent blown yourself up using 35 on acet.

freddytk421 1 year ago
@freddytk421 How thick steel can you cut with acetylene torch?
pROTPANDA 1 year ago
@pROTPANDA It depends on how big the torch and tip are. this is a 0 tip so It can cut 3/4 inches easily. some bigger tips can cut several inches. you can also get really small tips to cut sheet with if you want to.
freddytk421 1 year ago
How this method compares with plasma cutting?
vochitoken 1 year ago
@vochitoken This only cuts steel and iron. Plasma cuts everything. You can get started with this cheaper but plasma is cheaper in the long run. you would need a really expensive plasma cutter for thick steel but oxy-acetylene cuts really thick steel no problem. the oxy torch heats the metal more than the plasma so you will get warpage and other heat related problems if you are not careful like hardening.
