  • I am from Fermanagh I am a Maguire...We Irish have more Gaelic Speakers than Scotland or Cornwall...However.. I lived on the Welsh English Border...just inside wales in Wrexham...anyway The Welsh have more of their native speakers again "Literally"..even though the population is maybe half or 3/5s smaller than Ireland...The Welsh "Native Britons" are holding on to their past allot stronger than the Irish.....

  • I do speak Irish, however I am not fluent in the language. If one doesn't understand their own history or traditions, regardless if they have a knowledge of the language, then the traditions of that country die and so the culture dies. The Cornish for example don't speak Cornish yet they are very much connected to Conish and Celtic culture, they are racially different from Anglo-Saxon and Norman culure yet speak the same common language :ie English.

  • Racially, there is no difference between people in Cornwall and the rest of Britain. That was proven about 10 years ago through genetic testing. Any Anglo-Saxon influence in Britain was cultural and not racial. Whether some people "feel" connected to any particular culture is besides the point. Language is the carrier of culture, without the language it becomes something other. Whether that "something other" is a valid expression of the original culture is another issue.

  • You're an idiot there are people in this country who don't know the language, not a word yet they feel as connected to Irish and Gaelic culture as any man or woman who doesn't speak it. I suppose by your reckoning then only the fluent 250,000 thousand Irish people who speak Irish are the only ones truely in touch with their culture. What an idiot, in fact I'd go further as to say you are an uneducated idiot, people like you make a mockery of this country.

  • Obviously you only speak one language so you have no idea in how it can change ones perspective. People can take part in a culture but until they know the language of that culture, they only can get a small glimpse of it. If not then there would be no reason to learn languages and people like yourself can go through life without having to make an effort. Everyone wants to do things the easy way nowadays. To be part of any culture other than your own requires some work, wouldn't you agree?

  • The Kilt being English ahahahahaha, An Englishman modified the Great Kilt to become the small kilt, I'd hardly say it was English. Language is only a small part of Gaelic culture.

  • Why don't you contact Micheal Newton and tell him that languafe is only a small part of the culture. Or go to Sal Mor Ostig and tell them that. Language carries the music, the tales, the history, the geography, and on and on..... You're a fool.

  • How different our beautiful country could have been if the Gaelic way of life had of survived. The Gaelic way of life in the Scottish Highlands was able to live on much longer, in ways partly thanks to the British. It make my heart sad :(

  • "The Gaelic way of life in the Scottish Highlands was able to live on much longer, in ways partly thanks to the British"

Wow, I had no clue they were so open to other cultures surviving under their rule- how did they aid the Highlanders?

  • Because of the Scottish Highland regiments bringing Scottish culture all over the world, today there are Scottish regiments in Canada, South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand. The Kilt is famous as is the Great Highland bagpipe, because of the Romantic notion that went with these customs. Scotland wouldn't be the same nation today without it's Highland men going the world over and showcasing that proud nation. Gaelic life on the other hand in Ireland, died with the O' Neil, to our shame

  • I think that Gaelic culture in Scotland is in just as much danger as in is in Ireland. The language is the carrier of the culture, not the kilt (which is English btw).

  • A great video of Msgr. O'Neill, my favorite diocean priest.
