I am talking about such evil regimes as Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Maoist China, Khemer Rouge Cambodia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Kim North Korea, etc were not monarchies but republics. There are 2 types of republics and they are autocratic republics and democratic republics. republics can be based on rule or law and rule of men, just like democracies. A very good documentary. I found F. Zakaria's commentary far too pessimistic for my liking. I think sometimes he views America's democratic problems as being parallel to the rest of the world. However, Zakaria always seems to be pointing out the bad news on CNN, so maybe he prefers to look on the dark side. On the other hand, Cheng Li's view of China seems too optimistic, considering that the Chinese government is still calling the Dalai Lama a terrorist and a separatist.
