Gold Edition contains world campaign and disallow building harbor in unlimited play. And you can use catapults - i am not sure, but in VVV you couldn't use them.

If I remember correctly, the game files were uncompressed on the CD. So just copy the data to any location on your hard disk and start it from within dosbox. Remember to call the configuration programm (setup.exe or whatever that was called) before starting the actual game.

Install like Windows XP or Windows 2000 on your comp or get a version of the Gold Edtion that has been remade for your operativsystem. Just google. =)

If you use Dosbox, then use version 0.72, not 0.73. The Settlers 2 does not run smoothly on the 0.73 version and the audio sounds garbled. It worked fine though on the 0.72 version. Also, in the 0.72 version it's easier to edit the *.conf file. Look on the internet for suggestions to optimize this file. You can disable the pc-speaker and gravis ultrasound for starters.

yeah download a program called DOS box and then download the game if you dont already have it, then 'mount' the settlers .EXE through DOS box, its quite difficult: I saved mine in 'C' drive in program files, the reason why i used ~1 on the progra~1 is because it is over 8 charectors... if you cant find these ':' or '~' use: ALT + 58 for colon (:) ALT + 126 for tilde (~) MOUNT C C:\ C:\ CD PROGRA~1 then wherever the .EXE is e.g CD SETTLERS2 S2.EXE Then it will play in the dosbox window.

That is for vista by the way, but the alternative is buying/dwnloading the settlers 2 10th aniversay edition which is exactly the same game but with a 3D engine and better sound, plus up to 6 players over LAN

No. It runs on my xp without any problems. Maybe you have other version (I have gold edition). DOS-Box is useful when you want to play it with the second player.

Settlers 1 has an Amiga version, which had better music than the PC version but otherwise was identical. WinUAE is an Amiga emulator you can use.

I played split screen one time. I remember I used a ps/2 and a serial mouse and it worked. Im not completely sure but I think one of the two mice must be a serial one plugged to COM2.

This is a game you should buy an old pc for. Such a pc is cheaper than any new game. So you can play it old style. Make sure you got an Soundblaster AWE32 or AWE64 for optimal sounds. So your pc has to have an ISA slot. There are so many good old games which we can't play anymore. And I don't like emulators like DosBox, because it isn't user friendly. How do you set your soundboard with DosBox?

Very little like Age of Empires. Actually, it's more like the Sims in the sense that the best part of the game is just watching your little workers go about their business. Tactics, combat and strategy factor into the game very little.

yes true, the new games (settlers HoK and Settlers 6) are getting a little more like AoE games, in which they seem that u need a bigger military, unlike these games which made you have to have a masterful economy in order to succeed.

surprisingly it isn't, it rellys more heavily on keeping a heavy economy going, bread and fish for miners so they make need ores to make buildings and shields and sword for your troops. its freeware now so u should download it just search google.
