  • This show went out live from studio D Lime Grove. I had the dubious privilege of having to operate the Bosch-Fernseh effects machine (we called it 'inlay' or 'overlay' in those days) which produced the horizontal split for the headlines. These were on a camera pointing at a roller caption (rather obviously).

  • The music takes me back to watching every snippet of football i could. As opposed to today where there is such a dluge i grow bored of it.

  • top program presented by a top bloke..back in the day when sportsmen where real sportsmen ..not like todays hyped up premadonna,s..

  • David Coleman was the BEST football commentator ....

  • Reminds me of pleading with my parents to stay up late to watch the mid week sporting highlights and of course the footie.....

  • Colemans football commentary was great - 1-0 ! he kept it simple - it's a goal, it's Saturday !

  • @DeejayDREAM one of my fav calls was toshack keegan one-nil

  • Why did it stop just when he was going to interview Mary Rand? Very frustrating!

  • just put on the full extent of the first edition that I've got

  • lillian board died on a boxing day? rip

  • yep she did and she was born 1 day after me

  • Best sports theme ever, up there with SUPERSTARS! Anyone got SPORTSNIGHT titles from the 70s?

  • Couldn't agree more. Someone did a remix of this which was just unbelievably good. I wish I could find it ! Superstars is a great theme too.

  • Search on LimeWire and ye shall find the full, clean, two-and-a-half minute version: "Sportsnight" by Tony Hatch and his Orchestra. It's also available on a compilation album entitled 'The Best of Tony Hatch and his Orchestra', among which 'Hadleigh' also appears. :)

  • Excellent - was that Lillian Board in the titles?

  • Thursday 12th September 1968 (probably)

  • You sure, Robin? I'm pretty sure Sportsnight With Coleman debuted in 1967.

  • No, it was 1968. You may be confused because the theme music (which was used until the series ended in 1997) is often attributed to 1967, perhaps the year it was recorded. Also, seeing how it ended in 1997 people might want to make out that it ran for a round 30 years rather than a more awkward 29.
