When I turn up the sound really high I can hear a slight scratching noise between the clicks when the hard disk is reading the data. Is that normal? My hard drive keeps making that slight noise which I can hear if I glue my ear to the chassis of my laptop.
@ashwinnarayanVlog The solution is to stop gluing your ear to the laptop. Just check you`re hdd for errors. Read the posts below and you`ll figure it out.
@gicapopescu I did all the tests. In fact, I took the laptop to a technician who said that the tests showed no bad sectors at all. I also downloaded SeaTools and carried out the surface tests. They all came up clean. I'm just worried about the noise, that's all. It's probably just the normal operating noise but our other laptop doesn't make this noise. That's why I was worried.
@ashwinnarayanVlog There aren't two identical laptops .One could have a fabrication error, like a fan blade wich softly hits the fan case, a weak screw, etc. If the noise is disturbing, use the warranty, if is not, get used to it ;or buy another hdd:)
It's the "IntelliPark"-feature timer that retracts the read-write-heads into parking position after (on this model shown here) 4 seconds. Some are set to eight. Get the tool "wdidle3", run it in a DOS platform and set the timer to 300 seconds. Command line: "wdidle3.exe /S300"
@VOLUMETREE Look for a free program called "HDDScan for Windows version 3.3"
Select the hard disk (for each disk) and go to features in the menu and switch off APM, the clicking will stop.
If you want to keep it this way just simply build a command line with the same settings using the same program and place the batch file into the startup folder so it will run on startup, disabling the APM.
@VOLUMETREE I used this program to stop the APM mode because i calculated that after a short amount of time (about a year) that the hdd will reach it max park count and that the drive will be worn out.
@jojotjuh, no it's not. When it's opened it immidiately attracts dust because the plates are magnetically loaded. Air is normally not dustfree so the HDD will be dead in a matter of seconds.
I found the problem. It`s a normal click, made by "Protective head parking" technology made by WD. The parking can be disabled by installing quietHDD . Thanks
Wow. You opened your own harddrive ... why?

44C? Boy that drive is running HOT compared to my Seagate 2.5" drives. Why the hell do WDC's drives run so goddamn hot?

Sure alot of bad sectors now, now u opened it LOL. U can't localize bad sectors on your harddrive when its open, because once u open it...it's dead.
rsweres 5 months ago
@rsweres Just opening doesn't simply kill it. There a lot of factors involved.
