  • Does anyone have a fix for the whitescreen of death after doing this? LOL

  • @redking15ca that could be an LCD problem. I dropped my iPhone on the floor and the screen turned white. LCD swap fixed the problem for me

  • Never thought this could work....but it fixed my wifi immediately!!! Legendary ;)

  • Can you please mark where to use the heat gun on the iphone 4?

maybe on this picture (replace the (dot))

    macpost(dot)net/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/iphone_4_cdma_gsm_logic_board.jpg

    thanks!

  • Remember to use the foil and protective covering tricks! I did this to one of my 3G boards and now I get a white screen of death because I unsoldered the Display chip while resoldering the wifi chips.

I didn't use any protection, just the heat gun against the bare board on a table.

  • Add salt and it tastes real good

  • my motherboard looks like this one? what to do now?

    hickendesigndotcom/site/2011/01/close-up-with-the-iphone-3gs-guts-iphone-tear-down/

  • how is the red silicone band called???? pls answer me as soon as you can!!!

  • @bigcrispy0666 ebtech??? why is he stupid??..I got 17years experience and their still alot to learn in this business but it will fix the problem!..maybe ur saying it doesnt keep it fix cause he didnt use flux!...you must be a new to ur ebtech!...give it a couple of years and maybe you will learn some shit before talking out of ur ass...good vid by the way but u should tell people only to do this IF THEY HAVE PATIENCE!...

  • Worked great on my iPad. I just used my hot air gun and blew at about 250C for 20-30 seconds on the little can next to the antenna connections. This can was on the same strip as the I/O cable.

  • hi guys. i have an iphone 3g with the same problem .i tried this method and oven pcb reflow ,and none of them worked it works (1person of 5) you must buy new wifi chip thats what i did it costed about 70 dollars .

  • you say this works with an ipod touch. is there anyway you can show us exactly how to do this with an ipod touch? I am not quite clear on if I need to tear down the whole itouch or if I can focus the heat on the back of the itouch what? I have tried the chill fix and nothing happened.

  • Can i use hair blow dryer instead of heat gun but leave it for longer ?

  • @mtran2405 like how long? i tried it.. my wifi came back for a while but cannot connect to the wifi router.

  • You are stupid this doesn't keep it fixed I work for ebtech the lead free cracks with time

  • I did this last night to my iphone 3g and it works great now. I'm getting wifi signals where before it was just dead. I have to say at first i was a bit skeptical but this works great. Thanks for posting this how-to.

  • this works... only took me about 15 minutes from start to finish. thanks!

  • Will this work for my 3g ? wifi + bluetooth doesnt work (not greyed out) doesnt find any wi-fi network. I tried to restore but didnt work. I suspect that isnt SW problem. Please help !

  • Budy, you are a life saver. IT WORKS!

Thank you so much por posting this tutorial.

  • Hi my friend,

I been watching this your video, and all look seemed to clarify,

I have started to do it by my self, I bought all components to begin this work, but there left only one thing/tool which I still cant find where actually to buy, this one which you used to cover motherboard, it's made from silicone, in blue color, how it's called?

so please be kind and let me know the name, place where I can buy this tool.

Thanks, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • @xairepex : tnks :-)

please, tell me the temperature of you hot air and the distance from the phone.

I'll do in the christmas holidays

  • Hi, i tryed this method, first time reflow the square components about 20 seconds at 500 degrees heat gun, that doesn't helped. second time i reflow the wifi bluetooth chip component about 20 seconds and the wifi worked, but only 24 hours.. anyone have advice to give? HELP please!! thanks all

  • @TheVele82 : i tried these method yesterday and its work on my iphone..but i did 3 times. 1st tmes the wifi still didnt work, same goes to 2nd..but the 3rd tme i tried with full of risk, its work fine!..

  • @xairepx1 wich componets did you reflow ?? thanks

  • HI i wish to ask you, will this work with a Hair Drier?

  • very good video! can it also solved not grey wifi? i mean my wifi problem is only it cant detect any network at all. your reply is really appreciated thanks in advance

  • P.S. I did the BT - WF module at the same time. I couldn't see where it would hurt, I figured that if I didn't and it didn't work I'd have to take it apart again and do it anyway, so might as well kill 2 birds with one stone.

  • Just fixed wifi after not working for almost a year. Works great! The only difficult part is taking it apart and putting it back together. It took me about 45 minutes start to finish. Thanks much!!

  • Yes!!! It worked Thank you man...I had a grey out wifi on my iphone 3G and followed your steps and fired it up bam wifi :)

  • That's awesome I'll keep that in mind with me I 4

  • Dear all,

my 3g wifi works only during the winter. in the summer is "on holiday". I mean it works only below 25° C. Should I do this treatment to repair it?

    Tnks

  • @alaaleala : the best way is you reflow it..i tried and its tptally work.:)

  • i only have a 500°C heatgun. will it work with this? i don't know if you are talking about 750°F or C..Thank you

  • did anyone do it on iphone 3GS?)

  • This fix really works. Have done it to my iphone 3g and its fine. Followed the video step by step. Thanks for this post.

  • This method works fine (10 min ago I have assembled my 3G device) - now here is wifi! I dunno if it last long though... I've used rented cheap Chinese (real Chinese unreadable brand) heater, so I've repeated all 2 times - and both times my solder did not melt (( For the second time I've applied heat for 32 sec over all three units including big metal covered chip shown, described as BT-WF module.

  • Is this the fix for greyed out "No WiFi" issue? I don't get the wheel icon going round & round. Never looks for a network because "No WiFi". Thanks in advance..

  • I did this 5 days ago. On my iphone 3g jailbroken and unlocked on 4.2.1. And its working just like new :). So it was worth it to buy the heat gun :). THANKS!

  • I tried this on my 3gs three weeks ago and my Iphone has been working great ever since.

  • I got 2g and my mother board dont look nothing like that

  • is this for 2g or 3g

  • WOW! it actually works! fixed my iphone 3g. dropped 40 bucks on buying everything, but money well spent :)

  • WOW! it actually works! fixed my iphone 3g. dropped 40 bucks on buying everything, but money well spent :)

  • it worked for my iPhone 3G 16gb. Thanks!!!

  • the grey button disappeared and then i found a network. now i cant find any network

  • i did it! hopefully it is going to work!!

ich have the grey button but i had so much fear, that i turned zhe heat flow after 1 sec melting solder off

  • It works! Tried with hair dryer and soldering iron on ICs but it didn't work, all I got was gray wifi icon. bought the heat gun and gave the last shot, Bang! It worked. Thank you for sharing the method!! Now I got my iPhone 3G back with wifi!

  • hair dryer has low temperature, you need 750 degrees celsius and hair dryer has 150.

  • could you use a hair dryer?

  • @jamaalwilliamson i did it with a hair dryer by concentrating the air, make sure you'r hairdryer doesnt catch fire It got fixed for like 2 weeks but i'm gonna buy a heat gun for a permanent fix. So you'd better use a heatgun ;)

  • Thank you that fixed my iphone :)

  • I just tried the heat gun method in your video and it fixed my wifi issue. THANKS!

  • you mentioned the two metallic square box looking thing that you'll be focusing on I was wondering would it be ok if I thinker on the long rectangular one as well? because i don't want to put all back together and then disconnect everything in case the problem still persists.

    Thanks

  • Thank You very much,

I was a little hesitant at first to try this but since my warrenty was expired I gave it a shot, and when I got the phone back together turned it on and it immediatly detected my wifi network, I was very impressed, thanks again.

  • Fixed my greyed out wifi on my 3G using this method! Thanks for the vid!

  • It works! It works! It works! It works!

    Thankyou!

  • Sorry for the rant on your vid, but DUDE! I shouldn't have to break out the tools to fix something that is bought and paid for. OH, doesn't work? Oh, shit. BREAK OUT THE TIN F-IN' FOIL! Maybe Apple engineers should be required to - you know - ENGINEER THE SHIT SO THAT IT DOESN'T F-IN' BREAK SO EASILY! Isn't that what engineering is all about???!!! NO, let the home engineers to at the broken shit that's bought and paid for!!! OK - I'm done.

  • OH YEAH, I spent the weekend reading about how the internal Mat-SHIT-a DVD drives are a piece of shit. Mine broke within months of purchasing my iMac. If car companies were allowed to take your money for products that don't do what they're advertised to do, they would go out of business or be run out of business by regulators. NOT APPLE. If you pay a few hundred bucks for something that lacks in functionality, like, who wants to waste their time chasing down a warranty. NOT WORTH YOUR TIME!!!

  • I respect your effort and ingenuity. However, I'm an apple user since 1989. What's bitchin' is that Apple is now in the position to have the whole world thinkin' that whatever they sell you is f-in' brilliant EVEN IF IT DOESN'T DO WHAT IT SHOULD! I have an iPod touch, and the wi-fi hasn't worked from day f-in' one! My bad. NO!!! I PAID MONEY FOR THAT SHIT THAT'S NOT WORKING!!! Sure, I get a few other do-dads along the way, but guess what - I WAS ROBBED BY APPLE. GET OUT THE FOIL, FIX-IT TIME!

  • @johnPiercey if apple pisses you off, why purchase their products?

You said your an apple user since 1989 every other person would have learned from their mistake and would probably have purchased their stuff from other companies. But you decided to carry on and then whine about them.

    Kinda odd

  • Nen : ETS EL MILLOR!! Porto un parell de dies navegant i buscant la solució a 'SIN WIFI' i seguint els teus consells (tot i que em feia una mica de por cremar l'iPhone) l'he pogut ressucitar.

Que tinguis molta sort!!, te la mereixes

  • You helped yet another person revive his old 3G, and I hope you know how happy this has made me and my wife. I hope you have an excellent weekend! Thank you so very much!

  • Why don't you just use a soldering iron with a fine tip? way more accurate and less complicated to set up...is there a reason why a heat gun was used intstead?

  • @Keishemai You cannot use a fine-tipped iron. These are BGA or LGA components that have little balls of solder Underneath the actual component. The idea with the hot air is that it can re-flow that solder and cause the electrical connection to be completed again.

  • my 3g does not stay on, it shuts down a minute or so after bootting up, what is the heating way to fix that

  • Comment removed

  • wow this worked.. at least i saw it work.. and then my network disappeared

  • I have two iphones (3G) with same wi-fi issues. One fixed today! I'll try to fix the other one (again) tomorrow!

Thanks for the vid! I literally tried every other possible 'fix' for this problem but nothing worked! thanks!

  • WOW! THIS WORKED LIKE A CHARM!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO RE-FLOW OTHER PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD TO FIX CERTAIN ERRORS/PROBLEMS? IF SO, I'D GLADLY PAY YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND HELP.....

  • DON't TRY THIS AT HOME lolx xD

  • Hi, thank you very much. I´m just ready with some modifications and it runs!!!

  • thnx its very helpfull

  • i am facing a problem wth my iphone 3gs.its only working with the charger on,if we unplug the charger it turns off and wont turn on unless u put the charger on.PLEASE HELP!!!!!

  • @loststrang3r contact apple get the battery replace

  • OMG !!!! it worked for me like a charm, I was so impressed when I finally get my WIFI back on service , thanks !!

  • OMG !!! it worked like a charm for me, thank you so much !!

  • it didnt work for me.... nothing worked for me!!!

  • works great for me, something i want to add, you can apply some soldering past to around the two small network filters in order to make melting time shorter and better results in the long range, i did that myself.

again THANK YOU VERY MUCH *****.

  • When my wi-fi is turned on, it doesn't show any available wireless networks. I've tested this in multiple locations that I can connect to with my other iDevices. I've reset all the settings and restored my iPhone 3gs multiple times with no success.

My wi-fi and bluetooth have a MAC address, and I can connect to my bluetooth.

iRecovery doesn't provide any results when I use it.

Do you think my device is a candidate for this heat gun fix?

  • dont use a magnetic screw driver it will duck it up

  • im gonna try this but im still not sure if the 2g is the same method with the same looking motherboard

also do you need solder for the repair or is that just so you know when the reflow is compleat

  • this WORKED, BUT ...... it doesnt find any wifi networks any suggestions

  • I have a iphone wifi problem. It DOES RECOGNIZE very well all surrounding networks, but it just does NOT connect to any network . I tried multiple networks secured and unsecured and always get the error "unable to connect to network "

I've tried all possible solutions i found in forums but nothing has worked. I even put it in the freezer and it worked but only for a couple hours.

Does it mean that my last option and solution will be the heat flow/oven technique??

    Thanks.

  • My iPhone 3G wi-fi stopped working 18 months ago, this procedure fixed it. Thank you!

  • hi. if i dont have heat gun? can i replace it with hairdryer?

  • Why do some people say freeze your phone, and some say heat it? Im sure the problem starts because of overheating.

Anyways, I did the freeze trick twice but it never worked. I will give this a go today, but have some questions.

Why do you need to put foil over the whole logic board?

I don't have any solder; can I fix the Wi-Fi without using that?

    Thanks.

  • I can't believe it! My old iphone 3G works again!! This guid really helped. Thank you very much!!

  • on my iphone 3g dont work only wifi, bluetooth and 3g work perfectly, i will resolve it with heat gun or i should change wifi antenna?

  • @melpy9 yes, i wanna the answer too? any1 can reply to this?

  • @alif33 No, it wont get anywhere close to the needed temperature

  • hey mate i was wondering if you could help me... i did the oven trick at first and it worked but it only lasted 5mins so the next day i attempted this but with a jet lighter and that worked also however for only 5mins also.. is there anything else i can do to make it last for a long time other than just 5minutes. cheers!!

  • Work perfect at the first try!!!!!

    Lets see for how long.

    Anyway, thanks a lot!!!

  • Work perfect at the first try!!!!!

    Anyway, thanks a lot!!!

  • hi,

what is the material of the bordeaux cover that you put on the mainboard? thx

  • It worked! thank you sooo much!! great tutorial!!

  • thanks man... I am glad that I found this movie...It works...my wifi runs again.

  • What is Flux?

  • Done this twice, no success, do you think i should try the long wifi chip, and is it the same process

  • This was no help to me as how to take out the motherboard. :\

  • Thanks a lot! Worked for me too after everything else was tried with no success.

It took three attempts though with heating the bigger WiFi/bluetooth chip, but the result pays off the effort. Happy to have wifi back.

  • Will this correct a malfunction in the wifi caused by water damage?

  • Works perfectly! Just had 2 trys. I think with my first try the heating was to short! Thanks :)

  • hey sir you never showed befor unboxing the iphone that there is no wifi or whatsoever?

  • This worked like a charm for me. I followed instructions to a t (minus silicone) and tada! Just wanted to say Thanks! You're a basty craftord.

  • a este metodo solo le falta agregarle antes de calentar el chip un poco de flux organico y que sea liquido...

  • Hello, do you live in Costa Rica? I have a friend who's wifi has stopped working on a 3g. How much do you charge to repair wifi and if so where are you located?

  • Superb tutorial thanks!!! Works a treat now and my iPhone is as good as new. Amazing!

  • haha yes i fixed!!! thanks alot man! at first i thought i fried the motherboard but it was just a a cable i never connected back properly! thanks alot!!!!

  • I still don't know if this fix would work on a water damaged iPhone. I only get a wifi signal within 4 feet from any router. I tried a heat gun yesterday and it made no difference. Maybe do it longer? Focus more on the large WiFi chip? Is there any point?

  • hey man thanks bro i was a little skeptical about taking it apart but i traded a sidekick slide for it so i figured fuck it and it actually worked and i tried everything on youtube thanks alot man

  • I refowed it 25 seconds at 260°Celsius - it was greyed out - now it works fine!

  • Thank you so much!!

I dont belive that this an be work:

My Wifi was totally greyed out (dead). I followed your description and now its working fine. Thank you so so so much :)

The iPhone only cost 95 euros ;D

  • you dont need to put solder on top of the foil guys he just done that as a referance of the solder on the iphone chip so he know when it melts that means the solder on the board is also melting, he used the heatgun for roughly 14 seconds in this video so you dont need to get solder on top of the foil just count till 14 seconds when your using the heatgun, guys use common sense.

  • Can it be a Hardware problem if my Wifi is greyed out? Can I fix this issue with this?

  • Hi I was hoping you guys could give me some advice. I’m not sure if I should try the reflow fix because my wifi always works when I’m close to the router (about 6' max)

Sometimes very rarely it’ll work further but with 1 bar.

I believe the GPS also doesn’t work at all, I’ve tried all the reset tricks, pushfix’s, and reinstalling of firmware that I can think of.

    My phone is Iphone 3g 8gb firm: 3.1.2, it’s also been blackra1n’d, and redsn0w’d.

If anyone knows anything please help, thanks

  • Hi

    thanks for the fix

but my 3G is acting intermittent problem with wifi

sometimes it does find server and it will connect and cuts off

then tried to search again, find my router and cuts off after few sec to 1 min

    sometimes it doesnt find anything.

so i tried your fix using heat gun

first try, worked for 10 min but started to acting the same problem

so i tried again without covering the chip, but still worked for few min

do i have to heat the chip or the 2 tiny filters?

  • Is the iphone the same place as the ipod touch for the wifi

  • Great well made video it worked great for me but the only thing I did differently is I kept the heat gun on 350 degrees for 42 seconds as that's the method I use to reflow ps3s

  • After updating my old (but treasured) 3G my wifi stopped working. As I have no money for a new phone it's taken months to work up the courage but I finally dared to take it apart and try a fix. Lol!

I used the edge of hair straighteners (don't have a heat gun or soldering iron) and for a short time actually had wifi again. Okay, it only lasted a few minutes but I'm definitely gonna try again with a heat gun next time. Thanks xx

  • I did the 8Gb first with the heat gun & about 2-3 reflow. I took an different approach with the 16Gb, I used a small butane pen torch with 2 sec quick strokes, I didn't use solder & left the 2 chips exposed. i also did the long metal piece next to it on the 2nd attempt. The WIFI worksbut now the bluetooth doesn't. It stays OFF, when turned on it shows progress trying to detect/turn on but shuts off after a few sec. What do I need to do because the Bluetooth is more important than the WIFI.

  • I have 2 iphones with this problem: 8Gb & 16gb. The 8Gb never had working WIFI & the freezer method work for a few min. The 16Gb worked fine until 2 months ago. I tried this method and IT WORKED ON BOTH.

  • Just did it and it worked. At least for now. My iPhone 3G would not locate any wifi signal now it does. i kept the heat gun on for about 10 to 15 seconds after the little piece of solder melted on top of the tinfoil. Thanks

  • where is installed wifi component in iphone 2G?

  • my iphone is water damaged and my wifi does not work, can i still attempt this repair? and nice video :)

  • my iphone is water damaged and my wifi does not work, can i still attempt this repair?

  • Hey that was awesome! Took me 5 tries. I used some lead based solder at first to gauge how long to hold it on, but realized this might melt faster. I bought some lead free solder and tried...it worked!...for one day. Then I realized I might be acting a bit too timid with it, so I heated up the wifi chip along with the two modules you showed, and left the heat gun rotating about 3 inches away for 30 seconds...bingo! Has been working for 4 or 5 days now. Thanks so much for this!

  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I FIXED. It works great now. Good Job.

  • Its not caled mother board on an Apple Product they are called logic board

  • very good , my iphone wifi working .... thank you !!!

  • So, I have watched this great tutorial and first off let me thank you for your efforts.

Would this heatgun technique work if the wi-fi is NOT DEAD and just have a low range like my case or this is mostly an antenna issue rather than the whole wi-fi chip de-soldering ?

Anyone with a POOR wifi signal tried this ??

  • I am trying for the third time. It works for a while but the issue comes back after few hours of use. This time I tried to heat the area for a more then 15 seconds after the solder melted. We'll see...

SimpleServe, on one iPhone 3G, I have also the issue that callers cannot hear. Do you know if there is a similar fix by using the same technique on another area?

  • I successfully did this with a hair dryer!

  • @rvaneijden hey, I wanna try to use a hair dryer but I have some questions...

Did you use the hair dryer to melt the Lead-free solder?

For how long did you keep the hair dryer on?

    Thank you so much!

  • wouldnt the logic board melt at that temperature? I have been looking for a solution for the wifi for months.. My phone doesnt even pick up any wifi... so i was wondering if you would suggest this procedure to fix it.

Is there any possible harm that can happen to the logic board even if i do everything right?

  • My girlfriend's iphone had the greyed out wifi. I tried this as instructed and it worked perfectly. thanks!

  • Wait. So do we actually need to put more solder on it? or did you do that just for demonstration purposes? I feel like putting a blob of solder would screw things up and cause the solder points to overflow and connect to each other.

  • @NoVanity1 You put the solder on top of the aluminum foil as a guage to let you know how much heat is required to "re-flow" in integrated circuit. The new solder should never touch any parts of the phone or circuit board. It is only there to let you know when the heat you are applying is adequate to melt solder without over-doing it.

  • @NoVanity1 Its just so you know when to stop heating anymore

  • @NoVanity1 Exactly what i was thinking

  • @NoVanity1

The solder on top is just to verify the heat gun has been applied long enough. And you can tell the solder is melted when it looks like the terminator 2 guy when he turns to liquid metal.

  • @NoVanity1 The solder is at the side of the open area on the aluminum foil, not the components. This is just used as a gauge to let you know that the solder on the PCB has melted. When doing this, make sure it's on the foil near the components, but have it in a dip in the foil so it does not move onto your PCB as it pools.

  • How long can I expect this to work for?

  • Worked fine for me, lets see how long it lasts! :D

Did reflowing your iPhone resolve the problem permanently?

  • when i do this i only get short ranged wifi and around 3 weeks later it stops working so i have to reflow it again, any suggestions?

  • @jakx102 & @simpleserve

i could repair my wifi problem complete, but 3 weeks later it stops working, i reflew it again, - 3 week later the same issue, reflew it again........ it is now my 3hrd try. The last time i tried the other component too (simple serve showed it in the video- bluetooth wifi board) but now- 2 weeks later i have the same problem. Before i try it the 4th time, are there people who had the same problem and fixed it complete? I

    So please post your

  • sir can you upload another video showing heat application? we just want to see how the solder looks when it melts

  • @iloveging22 You can tell the solder is melted when it looks like the terminator 2 liquid metal. If you haven't seen that movie, add an extra step to this video and watch teminator 2 first.

  • @kevmcc7 lol @ this reply

  • i could repair complete my wifi problem, 3 weeks later (today) i have the same problem. Tomorrow I try to fix it with the same method.

I´ll let you know if it worked for me…

  • Well i have a wifi problem but some times it finds a wifi signal and drops it like in 10sek-2min time should i try to do this?

I woud love to get a reply on my email ice-cold@live.dk

  • will this fix the grey wifi problem?

  • worked perfectly! Thank you for the easy to follow guide and instructions! :D

  • You should upload a new video and show us the shape of your lead free solder and how it was applied to the iphone, you say it in your video, but your zooming quite far out that I cant see where its being applied and the shape I should have it in.

  • Tried the oven fix and it worked a couple of times for about 2 mins. Tried 3rd time and phone is DEAD. The "Plug in to itunes" Screen comes up but when plugged into itunes, itunes says Error #28 (hardware failure). And I get on responce from the phone. Is my phone dead or is there someting i can do???

  • I tried this fix twice using a 550°C heat gun. First time it didn't solve the problem. I could see the networks, but couldn't connect. The second time it took about 35 second for the solder to melt. Reinstalled the motherboard. But the phone won't boot. Screens stays black except when plugged in. Then the screen flickers white. Any suggestions? Try the heat gun method again? Oven trick? Or did I permanently damage my board..

  • @AzlecB you did permanently damage your motherboard yes

  • @AzlecB lawl that sux

  • @AzlecB double check your connector 1, good chance it's not connected properly

  • just did my first attempt at fixing an iPhone that was not finding any signal. it took 3 tries because I was nervous about applying too much heat but it works now. thank you so much for a clear description of how to do this. the ball of solder is a perfect visual. I did keep the heat on for about 4 seconds after melting as stated in your updated text. and that's what finally worked. thanks again.
