painterly is a nude matte color and bare study is more of a shimmery pearl color. I love both of them...if you wear more shimmery colors i would get bare study but if you do matte looks and just need something that goes well with skin tone then i would get painterly. The paint pots are used as primers so if you get that you dont need anything under it! ( :
