ahh im so bad at origami :X how do u do the second step.. sorry for being such an idiot when it comes down to origami :X your help would be greatly appreciated :D
It doesn't really matter as long as they are all the same size. The ones I show here are 10cm papers cut in half, so they are 5cm squares. I cut them in half so I don't have to use so many papers.
Yes it does. It shows very clearly how to connect the units. And you didn't have to post your comment 5 times. I give your comment 0 out of 5. Pay attention next time before you disrespect.
No they were all with origami papers either from the Origami Calendar, or stuff that I bought - the big Sonobe ball is made all from Origami Calendar papers. I have tried using wrapping paper, but it is often not strong enough and easy to rip it. People send me interesting origami papers from various places and I have a big collection of it - some of it is almost too nice to fold up :)
Jasmine I got 24 papers, made 8 pyramids, of 3 colors. When I assembled though, your small sonobe ball w/ 8 pyramids on its surface appeared after using only 4 of my pyramids—12 papers. The 3 pyramids dangling from the starter pyramid had woven together to finish the bottom of the ball. W/ starter pyramid pointing up, look down. The color pattern on the top 6 triangles is mirrored on the bottom 6. 6 pyramids belt the ball. Alternating 3 have 3 colors each, insertion colors reversed, 3 don't.
I could, but part of the fun is figuring it out. It's not too hard, just fold up 24 units, and start connecting pyramids. Always start with pyramids if you can't figure one out.
Basically you have to connect pyramids first, then connect 5 of those together and you'll see how it works. The pyramid is the basic unit really, you can't connect 5 individual units together.
You have to bend to points backwards for that one... the opposite way from how I did it in this video... so the piece becomes a wiggle shape instead of a curve. Hard to describe... just fold the points the other way.
no, you don't have to. I made it!!:D, I just tried a few times, and I made it, it didn't become a ball when i finished, so i needed to remove a few pieces. Thank you a lot!. Now my biggest challenge is the one with 271 pieces! lol

i am absolutely sure that the cube 5:31 is made from 6 units. not 8... well maybe there is another way to make it with 8 but i make them with 6.

No problem - but read through the comments, some of my counts were a bit off.

Thanks, this really helped out a lot, and I'm sorry I accidentally gave you 2/5, I meant to rate 5/5.
It was really clear how you made the units linked together.
I also liked that you showed me another variation of the unit.
Thanks a bunch.

ok, were a couple of those using Christmas wrap, by any chance? And, if not, did I just give you a dynamite idea?

i like the 36 unit the most (:

Thanks! That one is a special variation I came up with one day. The model now sits on my dad's desk - it is glued for durability.
jasmine2501 3 years ago
I think the cube only takes 6 units, right?
boomer32191 3 years ago
yeah and icosahedron is erm... 30 units

OK - show me better. I'll give you one day to post the video. I want to see YOUR hands doing the folding.

Jasmine, your count on the box is incorrect, it should have been 6, then you should a 12 but it said 24. be sure to check your numbers again.
Chadlmiller 4 years ago
No the numbers are the correct number of pieces of paper it takes for each one. Not the number of sides. Have some fun! Make them and find out.
jasmine2501 4 years ago
Huh, so many variations for the same sonobe unit..yours is pretty interesting color wise o.o
but actually Chadlmiller is almost correct.
To make a cube you need 6 units, the one you said was 24 units is actually 30 units (stellated icosahedron). That 200+ unit model looks insane.....
Thanks!

ooh my god i made a 900 unit ball thing omfg dude ill post vid its huge!!!!!!!
biggpogo 4 years ago
Isn't the Icosahedron model (5:44 in the video) made out of only 30 units?
I am trying to put this one together and I am struggling to make 5 peaks around 1 point (I can do 4 and 6 but not 5).
Do you have a video at all, on how to construct this shape, please?

uhm, I tried to make the one with 36 units, and it just became a big cube, very much like the one with 8 units, just bigger. how did that happend?
castword 4 years ago

jasmine2501 4 years ago
ok thank you
castword 4 years ago
so is it like there is no flaps or pockets outside the model when you are assembling it?
castword 4 years ago
No they are all there. I suppose you could do it inside-out, but it would be really hard.
jasmine2501 4 years ago
hmm, ok, I'll just make 36 new ones, and start to assemble. thanks
castword 4 years ago
If you can't get it, let me know and I'll post a video with more advanced Sonobe assembly.
