this was played at my grandfathers funeral as the coffin was brought in. That was over 20 years ago and it still brings a lum to my throat when I hear it now.
as luke said about barney playing the banjo and i think luke knew his back up, ladies and gentlemen, the best banjo player in the world bar none, barney mckenna.
Y're spot on. Barney often picks drone notes. He makes a few mistakes these days (but he's still great) but when this was recorded it was how he meant to play it.
I"ve got a tenor banjo but I can't seem to make it have that constant trembling sound like barney, anyone know of any secrets to this reel? is my pick supposed to hit each note in a certain form? newbie here would love some feedback!
Not actually a reel. This is the air from a song played in a slow, loose time. It's often played in waltz time.
For the "trembling" sound you need to master a technique called tremolo picking. It's used a lot on mandolin too. There are tutorials on YT if you search.
@youpick4me Learn tremolo picking, as you were previously told.. If you want a good example of tremolo picking watch Alex Chudnovsky's Ripples Of Silence on here. Sure it's on guitar, but the same basic principal is applied.
What a an amazing song and sucha haunting heart wretching version...this was played / sung at my grandads funeral. Still brings a tear to my eye...miss you gran.
