This song always gives you those cold chills and pinpricks that make you feel alive.I always wondered if it had anything to do with Margaret Drabble's novel of the same title.
I MET PETER HOOK AND IT WAS AWESOME!!!! (he's the bass player) He was really friendly and I enjoyed meeting him. (He had a signing gig at Amoeba Records)
I am confused. I have an Italian release on El Topo entitled "A Darkness in my Soul". I read a whatever book that JD recorded what was supposed to be their 1st album in May '78. That's the record I have. The songs on my record are recorded live in studio and more raw sounding.. JD dropped the Warsaw name earlier in that year before the Warsaw record even came out. Enlighten me!!
This is real music - harsh and raw. Don't expect it to sound nice, don't expect it to sound positive. It's poetry and art but not as you might like it. In its time it was unique.
My bands called JoyVision's >.< But I named it way before I knew of Joy Division.. But oh well.. I love the lost sounds cover of this(: It's better lol
i love there early stuff as well, but there two totally different things...but i dont know why people wont give this material the respect it deserves. it's a very important mile stone in JD's evolution. even the band shit on this stuff like their ashamed of it...
really reminds me of Bauhaus. The production on the JD recordings is quite different and makes their music more distinctive. While this Warsaw stuff is good to hear, and good on its own merit, it still doesn't much resemble their later sound. Just shows how important the production element is when developing a band and their sound.
well considering it was all demos no fucking shit sherlock, this was when they were still a punk band, so all the songs are mixed and recorded with a more punk ideology as opposed to their later use of distort and effects, this is intended to be more raw and in my opinion this ver of ice age is waaay better then their later ver they did as joy division.
Well said, agreed. To paraphrase a quote by Peter Saville (from Grant Gee's doc), "This is possibly heresy, but Martin Hannett presented a way to understand Joy Division. He heard something. He saw something. He felt something from them. He was able to project from his mind what it could be."
The RCA sessions. Arrow Studios, Manchester. May 3rd and 4th 1978. Producers: John Anderson, Bob Auger, Richard Searling THE DRAWBACK LEADERS OF MEN WALKED IN LINE FAILURES NOVELTY NO LOVE LOST TRANSMISSION ICE AGE INTERZONE WARSAW SHADOWPLAY Most of this song are in "Warsaw" the bootleg you posted here. Thanks
Wow...one of my all-time favourite songs, I had no idea such a version existed. I'm not sure what I think of it, it sounds a bit ridiculous when they all join in on the chorus, the bass isn't so prominent as later JD songs, and Ian clearly hasn't found his voice yet. Everything is in place though. What year would this have been recorded? Cheers for posting, fascinating.
Nothing will hold, nothing will fit.

i am huge fan of JD but this song is quite rubbish...they clearly hadn't found the songwriting skills that made them great at this point
BizRATM2 2 years ago
This one is quite tame compared to JD's version "Ice Age". Trust me, it sounds tons better.
BeneathTheSand 2 years ago
@BeneathTheSand the JD version is darker and creepier. the warsaw recordings were punkier
most of the warsaw versions sound better in my opinion but the production on the JD versions made their sound more unique and original.
paolorossifan2006 2 years ago
I prefer the way they did the chorus on this version, but overall JD wins out.
