hey coach, I am a beginner and I liked your tutorials . I watched your video a few times now and I dont get what the difference between bevel# 1 and 5 is. Like Lavamaster indicated they are the same, aren't they? If so, why are you stressing so much about Bevel#5 ....I guess there is some significance about it that you didnt explain in your video.
omg no way lol. i just took my tennis racket out and checked this grip to try to see if i could significantly improve and i just realize that i use this grip hahaha
@lavamaster530 You're basically holding the racket from the bottom. Sort of like twisting your hand around. Or rather, you're not flipping the racket around, you're flipping your hand around. Hitting at 1 would give you a very flat shot. Hope that helped!
Thats more like a severe western grip that produces very heavy topspin for the more advanced players especially for low shots its very difficult to get the racquet underneath the ball.
Tried this grip over the weekend and my shots are more consistent and since I don't have to switch the grip to backhand that also has improved. This grip also helps your windshield wiper swing. Low shots were difficult at first, but after awhile I was hitting those as well.
He's actually showing you an extreme western grip, any farther and it would be called a Hawaiian (look it up if you don't believe).
Nadal uses Western but it's not that extreme, if you look at the slow mo videos on here, it's halfway between the semi-western and the western in the video.
quick question...please reply asap how long will it take to be used to this grip? i have a match at 4pm tommorow and 9am-4pm to train...could i learn by then?
I'm skeptical. I don't think you or anyone else can hit with a western grip. Prove me wrong. Nadal, for example, uses a semi-western. It is the angle of the wrist that determines the extreme spin, not just the grip. That's why Federer can hit with heavy topspin with an Eastern grip
ive always had trouble understanding, but if u number ur bevels 1-5 and place that bone of the index finger along it and arap it round u have ur grip.
your pointer finger knuckle is on the right side of the racquet with the face held horizontal as if you're hitting a ball ( or if you're lefty, left side ) so again put the base knuckle ( where your finger connects to your hand ) on the 3 o'clock bevel, or 9 o'clock if you're left handed
you could hit a low ball, just bend knees n drop the racquet head n brush upward, like Rafa Nadal ... than again, he's not a normal player. Don't try this grip, you'll injure your wrist very fast ... like I did or maybe break your wrist. Stick with Eastern or Semi-Western. And don't listen to him about changing grips for different type of surface. Should always play with the same grip that you use. It's hard to master all grips. You don't see pros using different grips for different surface
yeah honestly who changes grips for surfaces? seriously the only thing i would do is if i played clay is brush the ball more and do more kick serves but besides that nothing else would change
I have been playing with a western grip for a long time , and is now natural to me , I play with a six one tour racquet as wierd as that sounds , swing fast as hell and don't have a problem with my wrist .
Low balls used to be a problem , but just bend your knees a little and extend your arm fully , hit it forward and hard , you can get tons of power this way.
I may be wrong but when you are swinging, it seriously looks like your holding just a service grip
Jubakayi 1 week ago
I tried holding it like that. It didn't hit one good ball. That takes ALOT of practice.
AndaAwesome4 1 week ago
@sultanabran1 It helps to make more top spin harder for your opponent to hit. If you use this you have a nicer form.

You talked about western grip and semi western grip, but you didn't tell what the difference is.
So what's a semi western grip?
ITubeTooInc 2 years ago
semi-western is an inbetween from eastern and western. You get top-spin and penetration with semi-western.
killerzombie163 2 years ago
Now I know why Nadal's shots imply so much topspin :))

@TheBig1dea yeah I've noticed that but you just have to work through it. just using different muscles I'm guessing.

a good thing about this grip is you pretty much dont have to change your grip to go on backhand

No, you need to hit about 10000 balls with it before you get comfortable.
