  • I may be wrong but when you are swinging, it seriously looks like your holding just a service grip

  • I tried holding it like that. It didn't hit one good ball. That takes ALOT of practice.

  • @sultanabran1 It helps to make more top spin harder for your opponent to hit. If you use this you have a nicer form.

  • Western Grips ftw!!!!

  • i play badminton

and tomorrow im playing tennis for the first time ever

im gonna look like an idiot

"whys that dude in a badminton stance??" xD

  • So when you hold it in western are you still hitting it the same way? Cause it looks like a very awkward grip to hold?

  • so if my index nuckle is on the fourth bevel, does that mean im semi-western?

  • @shamalot44 Yes i use semi western

  • Can someone please explain to me how to remove the Transcript on the video!

  • ha u said balls

  • i have a full western grip im 1 of 2 in the county who do it n iv played tennis for a year:P

  • I like when my girlfriend uses the western grip on me!

  • @pepsi4dan LOLLLLL

  • hey coach, I am a beginner and I liked your tutorials . I watched your video a few times now and I dont get what the difference between bevel# 1 and 5 is. Like Lavamaster indicated they are the same, aren't they? If so, why are you stressing so much about Bevel#5 ....I guess there is some significance about it that you didnt explain in your video.

  • omg no way lol. i just took my tennis racket out and checked this grip to try to see if i could significantly improve and i just realize that i use this grip hahaha

  • whats the diffrence between 1 and 5? ther basically the same on my racket

  • @lavamaster530 You're basically holding the racket from the bottom. Sort of like twisting your hand around. Or rather, you're not flipping the racket around, you're flipping your hand around. Hitting at 1 would give you a very flat shot. Hope that helped!

  • You talked about western grip and semi western grip, but you didn't tell what the difference is.

So what's a semi western grip?

  • semi-western is an inbetween from eastern and western. You get top-spin and penetration with semi-western.

  • Now I know why Nadal's shots imply so much topspin :))

  • hurts my wrist

  • @TheBig1dea yeah I've noticed that but you just have to work through it. just using different muscles I'm guessing.

  • Thats more like a severe western grip that produces very heavy topspin for the more advanced players especially for low shots its very difficult to get the racquet underneath the ball.

  • Tried this grip over the weekend and my shots are more consistent and since I don't have to switch the grip to backhand that also has improved. This grip also helps your windshield wiper swing. Low shots were difficult at first, but after awhile I was hitting those as well.

  • a good thing about this grip is you pretty much dont have to change your grip to go on backhand

  • on monday im trying out for tennis.

Highschool // and i dont know a thing.

    this guy helps me !!

    thanks alot.

ive learnt a lot from you from your videos now.

  • Lol i've only played tennis for one summer when i was 8, im im trying out too.

This Guy really helped get some of the basics down, and now its seems really easy

  • haha me too. I just knew youtube was the perfect place, it has everything.

  • hit the wall a LOT

  • I use this grip!!! Finally! I found a video that explains this grip! :D

  • I have a full western grip ;)

  • Wow, I've been using a western grip for years and that was the most confusing video I've ever seen.

  • He's actually showing you an extreme western grip, any farther and it would be called a Hawaiian (look it up if you don't believe).

Nadal uses Western but it's not that extreme, if you look at the slow mo videos on here, it's halfway between the semi-western and the western in the video.

  • quick question...please reply asap how long will it take to be used to this grip? i have a match at 4pm tommorow and 9am-4pm to train...could i learn by then?

  • No, you need to hit about 10000 balls with it before you get comfortable.

  • wow...

    what a massive exageration.

  • you're fuckedddddd....

I mean you must have gotten fuckedddd...

  • yea, austin texas. Rep.!

  • yeah nigga! represent!

  • excellent tutorial about grips

ive always had trouble about grips now I can actually hold a western grip properly, but how can anyone hit a forhand with this shot is beyond me lol

the bevels explanation shows i hit a forehand with a continental grip!, now i know lol

  • it's very very very tough to hit a western forehand =.=

  • I'm skeptical. I don't think you or anyone else can hit with a western grip. Prove me wrong. Nadal, for example, uses a semi-western. It is the angle of the wrist that determines the extreme spin, not just the grip. That's why Federer can hit with heavy topspin with an Eastern grip

  • thanks

  • not a very good tutorial ..

  • hu can plz explain to me the western grip??this guy's explainiation is not that clear...

    thx

  • as a tennis coach i can say this guy explains more or less correct .

problem is indid he is explaining a bit pourly . maby cause he is excited infrot of a cammera. who knows .

  • the bevels explanation should make it easy no?

ive always had trouble understanding, but if u number ur bevels 1-5 and place that bone of the index finger along it and arap it round u have ur grip.

its easy... even for me !

  • This guy is retarded

that is not what it looks like when you hit a western forehand

  • what bevel is the eastern grip

  • your pointer finger knuckle is on the right side of the racquet with the face held horizontal as if you're hitting a ball ( or if you're lefty, left side ) so again put the base knuckle ( where your finger connects to your hand ) on the 3 o'clock bevel, or 9 o'clock if you're left handed

  • thanks

  • that guy was nearly holding continental, that wasnt a western, and yes same grip for all surfaces, semi western usd by most!

  • you could hit a low ball, just bend knees n drop the racquet head n brush upward, like Rafa Nadal ... than again, he's not a normal player. Don't try this grip, you'll injure your wrist very fast ... like I did or maybe break your wrist. Stick with Eastern or Semi-Western. And don't listen to him about changing grips for different type of surface. Should always play with the same grip that you use. It's hard to master all grips. You don't see pros using different grips for different surface

  • yeah honestly who changes grips for surfaces? seriously the only thing i would do is if i played clay is brush the ball more and do more kick serves but besides that nothing else would change

  • I have been playing with a western grip for a long time , and is now natural to me , I play with a six one tour racquet as wierd as that sounds , swing fast as hell and don't have a problem with my wrist .

Low balls used to be a problem , but just bend your knees a little and extend your arm fully , hit it forward and hard , you can get tons of power this way.

  • does that mean reaching for balls that bounce low is very hard?

  • cool
