GREG MAY of Orlando, FL says: "My mom, the late RUTH MAY never missed an episode of "As The World Turns". In 1977 I bought my parents tickets to see EILEEN FULTON when she brought her cabaret act to Orlando. in 1980 I interviewed COLLEEN ZENK on my cable TV show. My dad was recovering from cancer surgery at the time and Colleen wished him a speedy recovery - now that's class!"
I can never forget the organ playing this intro, or the Soap Opera itself because this was the show that was interrupted in the middle of an episode for Multiple Bulletins announcing the assassination and death of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in Dallas, Texas on November, 1963. That:s the reason why I want to cry whenever I hear this Intro. Even though I was only a year old at the time, I only know that if "J.F.K." was alive today, he would have made me happy from his presence.
stupid question, but what in what chord is the first note? my uncle plays the theme on organ, but without the first "bong" (as I call it). what is the chord?
@soap1919jt Charlie Paul gave me a copy of the handwritten score. He has it written as two A's played as an octave. That's the way I played it for my channel.
@Soapluvva Hi Soapluvva! What an honor to hear from you, my friend. I absolutely love your organ and keybord playing. You are awesome! Thanks a bunch for the info, here. I have relative pitch, and it's good to know that I was 'relatively' accurate in determining the note(s) of the bong (or doh-ings) to the ATWT theme. Take care. Thanks again, and happy organ playing!
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is true That AS THE WORLD TURNS was WHEN A GIRL MARRIES on radio. 2 Peole have told me that AS THE WORLD TURNS was on radio. Was just curious. My Mom use to watch AS THE WORLD TURNS in the 60s and 70s.
@MrRob1954 No, "As the World Turns" was created by Irna Phillips strictly for TV. People may be confusing "As the World Turns" with "The Guiding Light" which started on radio in 1937 and then went to TV in 1952.
As The World Turns So Will Beginning The End Of CBS Daytime Were Special Making Just After 54 Year So Then Our Final Broadcast Will Get Before Some These Calender Until Nine Month From September,2010 ..Maybe Comes Off The Air..
I still get a "kick" out of this program when the "Organ Prelude" music starts. "The Guiding Light" is equivalent "s The World Turns" on CBS Television.
Fantastic! I have read do much about this organ music, and at last I have heard it, too! I think, In general, people must have been happier in those days...
Salvo laundry detergent tablets were really good. Easy to throw from a moving vehicle into a municipal water fountain display or from an upper level into an indoor fountain... and they could really hurt if you got hit with one.
Oh, and they were good for laundry- no measuring! Just chunk one of those puppies in and whammo blammo goddamo- everything
Anybody remember the detergent that had the big arm coming out of the washer? I thought it was salvo but apparently it was not. It's driving me crazy.
Salvo, a laundry detergent in a large tablet form, was marketed as a product which would prevent over-use of detergent. And, Badcamera32 - actually, the Food and Drug Administration did just as good a job of protecting the American consumer in 1955 as it does now; hell, probably better since the Republicans gutted the agency and Bush appointed industry stooges to run it. Hope Obama fixes it.
My late friend, Charlie Paul, was a fabulous organist! He actually appeared on camera, one day, playing at someone's wedding, in the early 1970s, I think it was. Eileen Fulton mentioned him, in her first book, "How My World Turns."
i can Remember being just about 5 or 6 years old and always hear that great Organ sound coming out of my living room tv every afternoon when my mom would be watching it,i played it for her just now and she almost cried ,,so great to hear and see how simple but effective the old tv (and radio for that mAtter) themes back in tv's early days, it's so great to see it again i have'nt seen this since i was a kid, great memory rush, thanks for posting it
@jsemancik1 I was thrilled to sit on the left edge of the organ bench on December 20, 1971 in CBS Studio 42 while Charlie Paul was playing the theme live for Episode #4068. The theme sounded much louder and "fuller" in the studio than it did on TV.
It's hot. LOL. If they were using this theme today, that first piano note could fade us right into the opening montage. I wonder what they made the planet out of. Probably a ball with paper mache continents stuck on it.
This music was composed and orignially played [the late] Charles Paul; he later orchestrated it and that version (the BEST version IMO) was used until 1981. I vividly recall after all these years that the closing credits at that time (pre-1981) said that the music was by "Mi Voix" but that was actually Charles Paul's publishing company owned by him and his wife.
yes it was used from april 2nd, 1956-February 17th, 1967. if you don't believe me then go to wikipedia and see for yourself in the opening credits history section

@east215 The beginning note (the "bong") is A natural, but the theme is in the key of D natural major.

I have been watching since 1965 and hearing this takes me back to my childhood. The greatest soap of all time, the one all others were compared to.

I gotta ask...what would possess you to do that? Serious question.

Well, fatmanfiftythousand...
Probably being a bored mischevious teenager at that time. I'm in my sixties now, so I hope I'm a tad bit wiser, and a lot less bored!
What's really BAD is when you get caught and have to clean up your mess... been there done that too...
What is said about youth being wasted on the young? Sadly true. But fun.
Thanks and happy holidays, my friend!!

I never heard of Salvo. I'm guessing it was a P & G product, but probably one that has not been available for a very long time.
