Could someone PLEASE attempt to explain how he did 0:42 to 0:50. I just wanna know how he went around the kit like that, almost looks like he only used one hand...
Well there's hella number of notes played there so it's next to impossible to discern exact transcription without slowing down. If you practice single strokes 16th notes, putting bass drum and crash on on 1 2 3 4. RLRL. Also, triplets. RllrrLR. rll rll rll rrl rrl rrl there's some good combinations to start with there. Try that last one playing the bass and crash on 1 2 3 4 , left hand on snare. Then alternate snare onto right hand and crash with left.
Matched grip is far more practical and useful, however traditional grip , although losing most of it's luster over the years, when used correctly, has it's purpose for sure!

Ive seen quite a few solos by Jojo using both style of grips. He uses them both equally well. The grip has very little to do with how you play. There is not one thing you can do with one style of grip that you cant do with the other. Being able to use either style of grip is definitely advantageous for a drummer.
I agree 100%. To say Jojo improved since 1991 or whatever it is because of traditional grip is not right. It is experience, practicing new ideas, and discipline that sets him apart from this age he was. Not traditional or matched grip.

Yeah, I have the dvd and he never proclaims to be a matched or traditional grip drummer, he uses both and each has its advantages and disadvantages (which is what he was implying if not said). Jojo has always been a primarily traditional grip drummer though, and explains it requires a different feeling and sort of frame of mind when playing than matched. I personally have been learning from him and all of the greats since the late 1980s (and very grateful) :p.
Well, Im trying to contrast this with his current stuff and in my opinion he really has come a long way. If I call this solo absolutely amazing then what words can I use for his current performances? So the best I could do is say this is decent and nowadays he is mind-blowing. Sorry if my choice of adjectives is not to your total agreement.
He has improved, but these are an epic skill and chops for a 20 something drummer here. Yes maturity goes a long way, too, as we have witnessed in the 20 years since this video.

I'm not sure! You can get almost the same sound out of almost any steel snare drum! just make sure it's tuned nice and tight! I have a shitty Westbury snare I don't use anymore and it sounds close to this when I tighten the shit out of it!!

I think people don't know the different between mastering the drums and mastering a style. There are great drummer that are great at there STYLE of music that doesn't mean they are MASTER drummers. Drummer likes, Jojo, Dennis, El Negro, Vigril, they do AMAZING things ON the DRUMS not just with a band.

You can compare drummers, technically... not overall, but just technically, it is possible. And in that respect, Jojo Mayer is pretty much greater even than Weckl and Colaiuta, not to mention Adler. Jojo has perfect technique, I think Freddie Gruber himself should learn some things from this guy :P

vinnie uses that same set up more or less plus one more floor tom, and you can find weckl solos playing with a 4 piece and just a few cymbals and just killing big time. these guys can own anybody with only a snare if they want, just another league you know

hey sonor503503 travis barker could easily do it all those things you said. I've seen him do the moeller technique! But he's more of a musical drummer, unlike these drum scientists i.e. thomas lang & jojo mayer. Travis can do much more than what he shows (which is amazing anyway- can any of you play 'online songs', or 'mutt'? = no) Travis has so much more style than these technical drummers,

I wouldn't call Jojo a technical drummer. Look at more of his modern stuff. Jojo has more feel than Travis can ever dream of having.

i hate people who just Criticize but haven't a clue, jojo was an amazing drummer with amazing technique back then, and still his form is growing.he has mastered every grip stroke and role you can imagin and inveted a few too, the guy can role faster with one hand then i ever will with two. he is with out a doubt one off the best drummers in the world. and YES jojo is so so so much better then travis!!!!

while i do respect your opinion. i wouldnt't go as far as saying that. barker is a hell of a drummer(NO obviously hes not better that JOJO here) but the problem with travis is that ppl have not seen what he can really do appart from the stuff hes been playing for the last 2-3 years which is very hip-hop oriented but still good. ppl should chek out his old solos where he really went nuts with all sorts of rythms. i saw him solo/concert live in 2002 and can tell ya its totally differen than now...

sometimes i really wonder how many of you guys are actually real drummers... let alone, musicians! most of you cats sit around comparing drummers... "he's better than him!" yeah I love Lang, but I rather listen Jojo anyday. That's one freakin bass pedal he's playing, absolutely amazing. This solo never gets boring.

well thomas lang draws a big crowd when it comes down to clinics and that creative control is better then secret weapons for the modern drummer i would choice lang over mayer anyday fro drum lessons
