  • His chops are so tasteful as well as technical.

  • He is blatantly influenced by progressive euro-electronic music, especially in this solo.

  • This is totally fucking sick!

His techniques is so smooth and controlled so you almost start to cry.

And btw.. the crowd must be on heroin or something... scream ffs, it's JOJO MAYER!!!

  • whats the thing that fell off the hi hat at 1:10?

  • @blapis89 Im thinking it was the screw that tightens the clamp

  • looks like Geddy Lee hitting the skins

  • I just have to say that I do not believe that I have seen anybody better than this guy and I have seen alot of great drummers but JoJo is gotta be best in the world

  • @lonniebatt

Vinnie. Jojo is right there though, both top -notch

  • @PositivelyBored I am referring to his hands and I should have said that I have never seen anyone with better hand and stick controlt if you never saw his solo where he just plays two drums simultaniously one constant beat it is freaking amazing he goes nonstop for about 15minutes and does not miss unreal

  • @PositivelyBored I am referring to his hands and I should have said that I have never seen anyone with better hand and stick control if you never saw his solo where he just plays two drums simultaniously one constant beat it is freaking amazing he goes nonstop for about 15minutes and does not miss unreal

  • This is what you get with a lot of pratice ... 1 to 11 hours a day over years and years

therefore he is champ .... unbelievable Condition

  • Could someone PLEASE attempt to explain how he did 0:42 to 0:50. I just wanna know how he went around the kit like that, almost looks like he only used one hand...

  • @congenialjackass

Well there's hella number of notes played there so it's next to impossible to discern exact transcription without slowing down. If you practice single strokes 16th notes, putting bass drum and crash on on 1 2 3 4. RLRL. Also, triplets. RllrrLR. rll rll rll rrl rrl rrl there's some good combinations to start with there. Try that last one playing the bass and crash on 1 2 3 4 , left hand on snare. Then alternate snare onto right hand and crash with left.

  • @PositivelyBored you almost lost me, but I think I've got what you're saying. My neighbors are gonna be pissed...all your fault.

  • Matched grip is far more practical and useful, however traditional grip , although losing most of it's luster over the years, when used correctly, has it's purpose for sure!

  • haha bitch boy fix the hi-hat! <3 this guy.

  • he looks like a samurai

  • 6:05 O_O Oh My God! O_O

  • OoO Uh, wow? Does that even come slightly close? No, it doesn't. He needs a shrine built when he dies. Maybe that's a little over the top, but damn, W...O...W!!!

  • This solo gave me a hard dick

  • this could, honestly be the most well spent 8 minutes of this day

  • is it coincidence then that the groove feels better when he switches to traditional grip later on in this video?

  • I quit drumming!!!

  • starting at 1:48 from 2:17 is soo fuckin' GOOD gives me goosebumps haaaaaa

  • looks like hihat clutches wherent what they are today back then. he used to have awesome hair though!

awesome solo too but it hardly needs saying ;-)

  • not mind blowing??????? are you blind??? his technique is already perfect here...he is just playing like talking on the phone if you know what i mean ...

  • Ive seen quite a few solos by Jojo using both style of grips. He uses them both equally well. The grip has very little to do with how you play. There is not one thing you can do with one style of grip that you cant do with the other. Being able to use either style of grip is definitely advantageous for a drummer.

  • I agree 100%. To say Jojo improved since 1991 or whatever it is because of traditional grip is not right. It is experience, practicing new ideas, and discipline that sets him apart from this age he was. Not traditional or matched grip.

  • @PositivelyBored Well, Jojo himself switched to traditional grip to aid his creativity basically, so it really has noticeably helped him improve. But yeah, the biggest thing is all the practice :D

  • @LukeSnyderMusic

Jojo learned playing traditional grip to start, actually.. there's videos of him playing trad grip at 6 years old.

  • so no, he did not switch to aid his creativity, basically. lol

  • @PositivelyBored Perhaps, but he definitely played matched for awhile, and switched to tradition. He explained the reasoning behind it in his DVD, which you should check out by the way ;)

  • @LukeSnyderMusic

Yeah, I have the dvd and he never proclaims to be a matched or traditional grip drummer, he uses both and each has its advantages and disadvantages (which is what he was implying if not said). Jojo has always been a primarily traditional grip drummer though, and explains it requires a different feeling and sort of frame of mind when playing than matched. I personally have been learning from him and all of the greats since the late 1980s (and very grateful) :p.

  • @PositivelyBored Ok, I could be wrong. Perhaps I remember incorrectly :D We both agree that he's a monster though, haha.

  • What's the fucking difference anyway? Every drummer grips in a way tat is more comfortable for him (her).

  • What is this blastphemy?!?!?! Jojo?! Match grip?!

    THE WORLD HAS ENDED!

  • haha lol...ye..is rlly strange...maybe he wanted to show them the french holding

  • chill man its an old vid

  • God Damn! Someone post a more recent solo

  • Y so u can watch it?

  • yeah...

  • theres like 400 vids

  • its funny to see jojo play with match grip.

  • Que clase tiene el tío, la terminación del solo lo dice todo...

  • Thats an epic solo...Vinnie Jojo and Dave just dont exist. They are living proof that there are alliens among us.

  • his drumming has improved a lot since this was taken.

  • I agree, this is decent but not mind blowing like his current stuff.

  • Decent? Lets be honest, most of us would sell our soul to play like this at 27 years old.

  • Well, Im trying to contrast this with his current stuff and in my opinion he really has come a long way. If I call this solo absolutely amazing then what words can I use for his current performances? So the best I could do is say this is decent and nowadays he is mind-blowing. Sorry if my choice of adjectives is not to your total agreement.

  • He has improved, but these are an epic skill and chops for a 20 something drummer here. Yes maturity goes a long way, too, as we have witnessed in the 20 years since this video.

  • He totally is a better musician now. I think a lot of it has to do with him using traditional since this video. He said that for him its like having to personalities at the same time when using traditional grip

  • the drums he is using is sonor and by the looks of the bass drum hardware they look like the designer series..cymbals are sabians..

  • Dose any one know what kit and cymbals Mayer is using on this vid. I know he uses Sonor drums and Sabian cymabls now. But what did he use on this vid?

  • Those were not Jojos drums as far as I can tell. he doesn't even have a throne here ! using one provided at clinic , it looks to me anyway.

  • Gr8 drumming, but dose he not look wried with long hair. Good stuff.

  • and the last part was funny

  • when was this

  • I hate to guess but since I cant find it anywhere, I'd say 1990-1992 roughly. He was younger looking and had short hair in his videos frrom 82 and 85 found on youtube also. Plus his attire in general looks early 90s

  • He kinda look like Geddy Lee (rush) in this. haha

  • Thinkin' the same thing

  • the ironic thing about this video is that this is when jojo was young....lol

  • HE SHOULD HAVE BETTER HI HAT STANDS

  • I was watching the tony royster video he is awesome but bye bye tony

  • He's full of ideas...amazing

  • agree

  • what an inspiration

theres no other words i can think of to describe this guy, so im not even gonna try. im just gonna log out, turn my computer off, walk outside, unlock my studio, sit down, and practice like crazy...

  • VoteOleg, your name is at least as grood as mine

you seem like my kinda guy, man :D

good luck with that song ;DDDDDDD

    hahahaha

  • I wonder what it would be like to take private instruction from this guy.

  • this is actually about the most musical thing i have ever seen/heard in my life (i'm old)

    astonishing

  • are you kidding me? your name is alan coleslaw!! THATS WAY TOO FUCKING COOL! thats musical in itself. i would write a song called that and kick mozarts ass for not being that cool

  • someone knows what snare in this video is ?

  • I'm not sure! You can get almost the same sound out of almost any steel snare drum! just make sure it's tuned nice and tight! I have a shitty Westbury snare I don't use anymore and it sounds close to this when I tighten the shit out of it!!

  • go yoyo mayer

  • no words!^^ amazing!

  • no se puede mas, este tipo es un marciano

  • anybody think he resembles the king of pop in this video?

  • crazy chops at 6:07

  • crazy chops start at around 0.01... and end around 8.10 :P

  • hahaha! I agree!

  • love the long hair :p

got a technique DVD of his from later on and he's got short hair and a mini goatee XD bless him

great sense of humour, and geeeez what a drummer :|

  • what kind of throne is that :-), Jojo is simply the best

  • Look when they zoom in at the crowd I think the Peter 'the Master' Erksine digging the grooves.

  • Tu és o kra...

    kkk

    bom gostei

    meu voto é 1000 mil

  • Oh my god this is so fuckin tight and grovy playing and that with a small and foreign set(up)!. Jojo demonstrates that withe people are also able to groove, not just the black hip hop drummers

  • yes this guy is a badass i am a drummer and he is my idol i hope i've be somewhat as good as him in the future, he inspires me

  • my band director told us to go home and research on him, and he rocks! (jojo i mean)

  • He looks so much like Geddy Lee!

  • jojo is light years ahead of neil

  • @WillWatson23 Yes... but not dave weckle

  • idk dude jo jo has the technique that blows neil out of the water, and trad is jo jo's best technique so this isn't even his best

  • @OBatarista No disrespect to Neil he's an amazing song writer and musician but JoJo blows Neil out of the water when it comes to feel, ideas, groove and dynamics.

  • Geddy Lee on acid!

  • Dude! This is vintage!!!! Anyone have anymore OLD Jojo clips????

  • No it's not Peter E.

  • jaja es increible ver esto!!! pensar que ahora tiene un set super moderno y una buena banqueta!! y ni hablar de su tecnica de manos, jojo es tremendoooooooooo

  • Hey I just noticed, is that Peter "the master" Erksine in the back ground at 3:13? He seems to be the only person who was digging that latin groove jojo played.

  • Are you sure?,he seems to have a lot of hair!.

  • Love Jojo Mayer!!!!!!!!

  • I think people don't know the different between mastering the drums and mastering a style. There are great drummer that are great at there STYLE of music that doesn't mean they are MASTER drummers. Drummer likes, Jojo, Dennis, El Negro, Vigril, they do AMAZING things ON the DRUMS not just with a band.

  • You kidssss will grow up one day and stop all this who is better then who. There all great at what they do there all amazing. And who ever said chris adler was the best needs his head knocked against a wall he a great rock drummer kind of heavy handed good double BD stuff, but far from the best. Drummers like jojo can solo for ever and not get boring. Hey im sure you guys can play stuff these guys cant play. its like cooking a great meal some know how and some think they know how. peace

  • fucking amazing!!

  • whoever having to get onstage and repair his hats - this is Hungary, my fuckin country, oh my God :D. anyway - Jojo is the best when it comes to technique.

  • You can compare drummers, technically... not overall, but just technically, it is possible. And in that respect, Jojo Mayer is pretty much greater even than Weckl and Colaiuta, not to mention Adler. Jojo has perfect technique, I think Freddie Gruber himself should learn some things from this guy :P

  • did you acknowledge that jojo mayer plays single pedal..............chris adler sucks donkey dick compared to this master sooooooo fucking uneducated in music ain't cha???

  • jojo mayer is wayyyyy more technical than chris adler. adler rules though :) (ask adler, i'm sure he'd agree haha)

  • haha there is no way you can be serious while saying that

  • fishnmusicn vinnie and dave are great drummers but they play big sets.......jojo mayer plays a small you have to acknowledge thatanybody can play a big set but can you play a 16 minute solo without using a repeative phrase???

  • vinnie uses that same set up more or less plus one more floor tom, and you can find weckl solos playing with a 4 piece and just a few cymbals and just killing big time. these guys can own anybody with only a snare if they want, just another league you know

  • jojo better in every aspect

  • you cant compare drummers! they have there own styles....

  • travis is dirt compared to jojo

  • Sorry, but he sounds off to me - trying to compare him to Dave Weckl is a joke. Drummers like Dave and Vinnie would destroy this guy...

  • TRAVIS NEEDS lessons from jojo mayerr

  • it pisses me off when people use different drummers on a jojo mayer video.........jojo mayer is in the big leagues comparing travis to jojo mayer is like a fight between gary coleman vs. mike tyson!!! get the fucking picture you fucking tasteless drummers with your double bass bullshit!!!

  • Jojo has the fastest foot (lol) out of those who only use single.

  • how can you call travis shitty? are you as good as him? if travis is shitty, then you must absolutely fucking catastrophically bad on the drums

  • I wouldn't call Jojo a technical drummer. Look at more of his modern stuff. Jojo has more feel than Travis can ever dream of having.

  • better then any black drummer on the scene haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • travis aint got shit on jojo. comparing them is like saying travis is better then buddy rich (witch is even worse). but travis sucks compared 2 both

  • Travis is perhaps the shittiest drummer to ever hit the popular music scene.

  • Josh Freese on the other hand is a beast. So is Gil Sharone. Now those guys are badass.

  • JOJO MAYER is one of the most technical drummer ever superb drumming one of the best or the best

    drummer of all time

  • can travis do drum and bass didnt think so can travis do moller technique didnt think so can travis do1 hand rollfaster than joj didnt think so so whats the finl result jojo is way better than travis

  • hehehe, JoJo's lookin a bit out of it with those pants/shirt.

    Still..the man rocks.

  • my personal favorite drummer!!!! keep on jojo & drive us crazy!! thanx for the vid. man!!

  • Oh my god!!!! How can you say that Barker i better than Jojo? You're crazy or what? I think you should study a bit of music! You can't still understand what Jojo is doing on this video

  • Jojo is a killer drummer. Beware. But he's a superb down to earth guy.. Simply a great drummer.

  • i hate people who just Criticize but haven't a clue, jojo was an amazing drummer with amazing technique back then, and still his form is growing.he has mastered every grip stroke and role you can imagin and inveted a few too, the guy can role faster with one hand then i ever will with two. he is with out a doubt one off the best drummers in the world. and YES jojo is so so so much better then travis!!!!

  • You can't be serious. Comparing a punk drummer to Jojo? You obviously don't understand Jojo's playing. ( By the way, I hate to realise, that it was filmed in Budapest, while I live in Hungary, and missed it! )

  • oh shut up. I cant geat near jojo's playing and i can outperform anything i ever heard travis make. And im 15...

  • No es humano, es increible!

  • i can it better

  • travis is crap

  • jojo will kick travis ass.. just like every drummer did..

  • Indeed. Travis sucks compared to every drummer that makes it to the modern drummer festival.

  • while i do respect your opinion. i wouldnt't go as far as saying that. barker is a hell of a drummer(NO obviously hes not better that JOJO here) but the problem with travis is that ppl have not seen what he can really do appart from the stuff hes been playing for the last 2-3 years which is very hip-hop oriented but still good. ppl should chek out his old solos where he really went nuts with all sorts of rythms. i saw him solo/concert live in 2002 and can tell ya its totally differen than now...

  • LOL sk83 are you out of your mind? I'd like to see Travis Barker even ATTEMPT the speed and technique that JoJo has. Go back to your garage band crap, leave the music to the adults.

  • You're an idiot kid, Travis Barker doesn't have shit on JoJo Mayer. Get out of the hype and learn about fucking drumset playing. Honestly....

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA WOW!!!!!!! U fucking dumbass retard!!!

  • hole...eee....crap. i luv this guy.

  • love his incorporation of the cymbals

  • this is real cool some frases are similar to those who benny greb now uses in his styl of drumming.

  • o hes using match grip wahao:D

  • I wont touch my drums again.Who the fuck rated this for less than 5*?Retared or what?

  • beautful recovery from that stick drop. He is a better drummer today by far, hes making drum history with NERVE.

  • Man, what a ghetto throne he has, poor bastard, but JojO has and alwas will be a killin drummer, especially now adays.

  • what about this trone he is using... LOL

  • mégilyet, hisz ez ittvan :o

  • lol the end was the funniest part of all. everybody was like is it over. he wasnt even sure if it was. Awsome!

  • around 2:50...... he dropped the stick on purpose did he.......?

  • I dont think he did, awesome solo tho!

  • no,its that hes no good

  • this guy is alien

  • Fuck me! I cannot believe he can get that much action out of a single kick! That is wicked, most wouldn't be able to duplicate that with a double kick

  • from 6 on he's unbeatable!

  • i love the latin feel he gives 3:06...never seen him do latin, but i would love 2 c him pull out a songo with a latin jazz band...he's a master at this...WOW

  • +RODNEY HOLMES too...

  • he's ALREADY AMAZING back then...and it's great to see how much he's PROGRESSED NOW!!!

also check out STEVE HOLMES and BENNY GREB if you like Jojo Mayer...

  • tasty

  • I like him super

  • Geddy Lee Plays Drums TOo??? (jk) can't believe nobody commented on how much he look like geddy in this clip...Gr8 playing by the way

  • I'd love to see Neil Peart's face if Geddy turned up to the studio one day and did this.

  • for the record ....Jo jo SMOKES Lang....

  • agreed jo jo can groove mr lang cant

  • sometimes i really wonder how many of you guys are actually real drummers... let alone, musicians! most of you cats sit around comparing drummers... "he's better than him!" If a musician is worth mentioning, then he or she is probably way more skilled than YOU who hate!!! Just appreciate what you are blessed to see!

  • why do people keep comparing jojo mayer to thomas lang. They're different drummers. Thomas Lang is a technical beast and jojo mayer is awesome.

  • yeah I love Lang, but I rather listen Jojo anyday. That's one freakin bass pedal he's playing, absolutely amazing. This solo never gets boring.

  • well thomas lang draws a big crowd when it comes down to clinics and that creative control is better then secret weapons for the modern drummer i would choice lang over mayer anyday fro drum lessons
