If you think that a house has to "breathe" by being intentionally leaky, you need to do more research. (or you install fiberglass insulation for a living) Foam is by no means the only way to insulate, but it is superior for many applications. Before anyone comments, I am in no way affiliated with any insulation company.
Insulation is not the material designed to stop air infiltration, nor should it be. Every wall is typically required to have an air barrier on the inside and outside. These barriers, usually the drywall and osb or other type of sheathing material, can be sealed easily. Any sealing will usually require you to use mechanical ventilation now that the house is too tight. Rely on a 2$ chinese fan motor for fresh air for my children? OR Just let the freaking houses breathe. Why foam will never make it
Open cell foam will allow the water from the water leak to pass through it. You want have a problem finding the leak and fixing it. IF you get a water leak.
@latitude500 That would suck to have to replace that high quality r-25ish attic insulation there. Great you can find the leak though. This spray foam stuff is top notch as long as you don't know how to do a manual j, and suck at simple math.
I agree with d1incharge. A new properly built house with fiberglass insulation is tight. Foam and fiberglass homes need HRV system properly installed. Fiberglass does cause lung cancer so check that out. I want to keep energy low. Reduce energy needs first then find cheaper sources of energy.
@AmazingFoamInsulatio Maybe you could fact check so you don't look so ignorant? Loosefills today don't cause cancer, as much as foam is inhaled while installing and suffocates people to death. The reasons installers for both need masks. But homeowners of neither need masks. If the stuff you have in your attic is getting inside or into your indoor air, learn how to build right. Foam homes are often left too tight, MORE OFTEN THE CAUSE OF CANCER. Is VOC, trapped in by idiotic products like foam
When water leaks in behind the sheathing, between the sheathing and the foam, it will destroy the boxing, therefore forcing you to replace your insulation/siding as well. Air leakage on a typical home is like the front door being open? Sure it is buddy......WHO IS THIS IDIOT? Nice "display", my house must be different, it doesnt have a hot air blower for a cieling? And it is up to code on rack strentgh, you make it sound like I need more racking strentgh? YOU PEOPLE GIVE FOAM A BAD NAME!!!!!!!
Here is a good read for ya dmbass....."Cathedral ceilings tend to have limited insulation and can account for large energy losses. The IRC has now limited the size in which you can build cathedral ceilings to either 20% of the entire ceiling area or 500 sq. ft., whichever is less." When you spray up the roof, that makes it cathedral... FOAM IS FCKED!!! IRC is busting you fcking crooks! Do you own a blower door? I test air infiltration for a living moron, HOMES CAN BE TOO TIGHT W/O FOAM!!
I live it tx duechebag, attics with foam are nice, I feel for the poor sucker homeowners that are paying to condition them! How fcking stupid can you be to want to condition your attic??? HUH you fcking moron!! How many cubic feet of air are you adding to your hvac load? What is the R-value of the 2" of foam he is putting on the ceiling? That home isnt even to MINIMUM insulation standards for the ceiling!! Probably some podunk town with retard inpectors, like the builder. Ignorant fucks.
If you could ever afford a blower door infiltration testing machine, you could find out for yourself that new homes without foam alot of times are too tight, unless you just suck as a builder. You do realize that you need fresh air in a home right?
You dumb fck, I do energy audits daily and most new homes are too tight WITHOUT FOAM. The sheetrok is the air seal not the insulation. You dumbazzes are shooting yourselves in the foot.

r factor means very little - its the air infiltration that's the problem. you get air when the door opens duh.

According to the DOA, vapor barriers are BAD.
