ok people you guys do know that ryuchi sakamoto (from YMO) and Michael Jackson co wrote Michaels version, that was later covered by clapton etc. I love Michaels version and this version, but claptons is a cover from Michaels version. and there fore there should be no fighting since MJ version is a collaboration of MJ and YMO so if you guys say :oh i hate MJs version"etc your also talking crap about Sakamoto (YMO)
@thekingofcinema1 He only approved of it, he did not co-write it. MJ's version was by MJ and Quincy Jones. He only gets songwriting credit since it's his song still.
@TheHomonyms I know. What I'm saying is that MJ's cover it's more similar to this version than to Greg Philliganes' or Eric Clapton's versions of this same song...
@618033988749 I already know about this song, thanks. And I'm not wrong. How am I wrong? The "finished" version of this song that appears on MICHAEL is NOT the same as the original version he made back in the 80's...music-wise, anyway. Yes, that's him singing, yes he wrote new lyrics but I think you misunderstood me when I said he had nothing to do with this. Technically, he didn't. Like I said, producers and engineers worked on this "final" version for the album since Michael isn't here.
LOL. The best version of Behind the Mask is not by Y.M.O or Michael Jackson, the best version is Sakamoto Ryûichi and Komuro Tetsuya's version(s), because TK is so great :) .
How about everyone stop arguing about whose version is better? I like them BOTH. And how about everyone stop saying what "MICHAEL DID" on his album because MICHAEL didn't do a DAMN THING. The man is DEAD. HAVE SOME DAMN RESPECT. All those producers and engineers are the ones who "finished" this song...
Also, something else interesting I've noticed, unrelated to this song, is that the drum beat in MJ's "Billie Jean" (1982) is almost identical to the drum beat in YMO's "Computer Game" (1978). It seems to me that MJ was probably a fan of YMO's work in his pre-Thriller days, hence why he originally wanted to do a cover version of "Behind the Mask" for Thriller.
Don't start a little BTM war let's be happy we have 2 great versions of this Beautiful song even though I like MJ's better but don't fight just enjoy the song
Don't start a little BTM war let's be happy we have 2 great versions of this Beautiful song even though I like YMO's better but don't fight just enjoy the song
All of U are so off-base it's silly. First off, Quincy had nothing 2 do with the decision that Mike made about writing lyrics 2 the song. It was done because his main keyboard player in the studio (Greg Phillinganes) and MJ had a severe love of YMO. Greg wanted 2 record the song 4 his solo album (released in 1985 on Planet/RCA). MJ asked Ryu if he could do it, and he agreed, having just retired YMO 4 the time being. EC's cover is a cover of a remake. (One I despised, by the way.)
Don't know what the problem is here: Sakamoto wrote the music & lyrics for the chorus, MJ & Modsell put in lyrics for the verses. All three contributed to the final full version of this song. This original version is great, but needs more lyrics if it was to be a hit.

behind the mask is written by Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1979. at first he was sort of dissagreed with Yukihiro Takahashi from the band whos gonna come first for a credit, but he gave a name for Rydeen, so they totally agreed the song was written by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Actually, "Behind the Mask" was first produced by YMO in 1978 for a Seiko commercial and they performed it live that year as well. They then recorded the song in studio as part of their "Solid State Survivor" album for release in 1979.
I don't really know what you're trying to say, What's the point, but we only know one thing, Which is he was a big fan of YMO since around before thriller. so her friend, Madonna knew them through Michael. Sakamotos on a PV called rain, check her vid. on Youtube. I nolonger knows who payed for their songs to who. and I just re-bought the album off the wall, with the new album of Harry Hosono for a reservation.
it's weird that they put MJ's name first in the list (credits) when he just wrote the lyrics and did some arrangement... Michael don't usually do that, he gives the "first place" pretty easily to others. But other artist like Beyonce and Madonna doesn't necessarily change the music but their names are listed first
nobody from the band thinks Kraftwerk was only for electrical band. I know YMO helped making music of Divo, but YMO is also the band what plays soul, disco, fusion, funk, pop,for teen idol lollipop, hard rock, punk, newave, fock music, classical, rap, etc, etc.
culm down, skinflic or whoever it is. Someone still against what I said, it's TRUE many people call their name, Kraftwerk before me. I just told her so. so far I personality don't care much about Kraftwerk either.
i want to add one thing.. it's nonesence comparing, a musical composition to a song.. both of them are great, but this is a melody, that one is a song... each of them are great.. even though this one influenced creating the song, it's so different listening each of them..this one, it's a total electronic symphony, that one is a TOTAL electronic SONG, mega-hit i think... i like both...
actually, the original composition of the song is all about the composition, it's not a song actually, it's mostly about the electronic melody, arranged with little chours and the original version is good of course with it's own idea.
if we talk about this composition as a song, than that's michael's total creation, he sculpted a total song, out of an electronic melody, created lyrics and some melodical parts which was absent in the original version, cuz it wasn't planned to be an actual SONG".
I bet YMO are proud to have Michael singing on this track. It really shows how much respect MJ had for them to use their song as the base of one of his.
@kenichisaitohchenii:I tolerate your opinion-but Kraftwerk get a lot of scorn in my German home country for their arrogant attitude that THEY allegedly invented techno-pop -which IS nonsense. They often lack the humor+human touch necessary in the electronic world -or repeated their concepts too often."Tour de France"is a great track for me,it´s got humor, but you can also watch read Kraftwerk fans expressing the humorless attitude in DEVO-forums.After all:Kraftwerk did not invent the synthesizer!
@kenichisaitohchenii: OR - let´s put it like that: It is not the synthesizer´s fault that Kraftwerk and parts of their fans say that a synthesizer can ONLY sound like Kraftwerk. LOL
I give full respect to YMO, but Michael Jackson Wrote some excellent lyrics for this tune and its Amazing and really gives the music another dimension, and an atmosphere. In my humble opinion.
this video should be linked to the vids. on Michael Jackson with Eric Clapton and some other bands. people must be noticed by now. once again this BBS is a video of YMO, not for Jackson. be loyal to the origin.
Behind The Mask is not in an album called thriller ,the reason, again is because Jackson dumped up YMOs proposal ,should be sent in by Jackson a demo, but he didn't and already asked YMO for a 100 percent ,not a 50 before send YMO a demo. read his book or interviews, or some articles. plus Jackson have done something on their song without their permit is already an illegal or what.
It isn't plagiarism if credit is given to the original creator which was YMO. MJ added lyrics. He also received 50% of the song writing (copyright) when Eric Clapton did his version. Credit had been given to the YMO and the song writers. Go read the credits in the new "Michael" album.
the fact that even Billy Jean and some others sounds like YMO, the whole their back arrangement. perhaps thriller was planning to arrenge the full album more electrical sound, just like this ver, what the YMO had as their own original sound.
Why are people going back & forth about this? YMO made the song, MJ & Q liked it and asked if they could record it with MJ's added lyrics. Please explain the debate....PS...Eric Claptons version is terrible. The lyrics & sound do not fit his style.
@frednichols Just think for a moment YMO is from Japan and Sony is from Japan ! They all payed very well believe me ! Mike wrote The Lyrics but never released this song Sony did that and Eric Clapton could not sing this song without authorization of Sony ! This is why Sony sucks !!
@frednichols I just want to say when MJ didn't release this song because it's not his why was Sony made that mistake ? Only because of money !! When Mike died of course !
MJ did not plagarise this song you thicko.. Do you really think sony would reveal this song on an album if it was?? KNOW YOUR FACTS!! WILLCRAZIESHOULDBEINAMENTALHOME
both the YMO and Ryuichi Sakamoto,as a solo artist are never ever making money with this issue what Jackson had left. he doesn't have a piano of his own at his flat in New York. because of the rent. and people who are Behind Michael Jackson makes cash with his song. too many Japanese artists can't get pay ,because You guys never buy their music. buy their CDS sometimes.
OMG....Michael was always ahead of his time. Just like this group which I'm sorry to say I had never heard of before. This is whats hot now and obviously influenced so many big artist now. For Michael to cover this song is such a compliment to the group but I wonder it they didn't approve back in the 80's and thats why it wasn't released. hmmm?
Well theyre makin money now. I love it!!!!!!!! It's truly Michael.
I must be honest and admit all my ignorance: I did not know of the existence of this awesome Japanese Electronic Orchestra!! If even one as big as Michael Jackson (the King Of Pop) has gone "so far" to look for a base and then work on it and make a hit single, there is a reason.... :-)
you lot need to realize that this is the original version of 'behind the mask'. you can say MJ's, or Greg Phillinganes', or Eric Clapton's versions are better, but without the original, none of these covers would exist.
give this version of the song and YMO the respect they deserve
@bm5891 yes. why can't people either appreciate how a song grows & evolves over time? Sometimes it's best to treat originals & their covers as if they are different animals, rather than get obsessed with what is the 'best version' nonsense!
@bm5891 No you are wrong it's not a cover - Michael asked to the author permission to make his own version and rewrite the lyrics, and Sakamato immediatly agreed and sent the title to Michael, so yes the song we hear on this video is Sakamato but the lyrics on Michael's version are differents- And I can tell you that for having the last album "Michael", Sakamoto has the credit he deserves as songwriter for "Behind the Mask".
@misshisvoice um, yes thats what a cover is, an artists own version of a song from another artist. just because MJ rewrote lyrics does not mean the song is not a cover.

nobody from the band thinks Kraftwerk was only for electrical band. I know YMO helped making music of Divo, but YMO is also the band what plays soul, disco, fusion, funk, pop,for teen idol lollipop, hard rock, punk, newave, fock music, classical, rap, etc, etc.
kenichisaitohchenii 11 months ago
chris mosdell will cry if YMO doesn't sing for behind the mask. ,,,,,,,,

culm down, skinflic or whoever it is.

TheMondaygirl 11 months ago
actually, the original composition of the song is all about the composition, it's not a song actually, it's mostly about the electronic melody, arranged with little chours and the original version is good of course with it's own idea.
if we talk about this composition as a song, than that's michael's total creation, he sculpted a total song, out of an electronic melody, created lyrics and some melodical parts which was absent in the original version, cuz it wasn't planned to be an actual SONG".
TheMondaygirl 11 months ago
I bet YMO are proud to have Michael singing on this track. It really shows how much respect MJ had for them to use their song as the base of one of his.

@bigtaterman Right On!!!! I didn't know nothing about YMO till MJ's version I heard.

MrSKINFLICK 11 months ago
@kenichisaitohchenii: OR - let´s put it like that: It is not the synthesizer´s fault that Kraftwerk and parts of their fans say that a synthesizer can ONLY sound like Kraftwerk. LOL

I give full respect to YMO, but Michael Jackson Wrote some excellent lyrics for this tune and its Amazing and really gives the music another dimension, and an atmosphere. In my humble opinion.

find and read, hear, anything on YMO if you still doubt them ,you take years for that.
kenichisaitohchenii 1 year ago
Behind The Mask is not in an album called thriller ,the reason, again is because Jackson dumped up YMOs proposal ,should be sent in by Jackson a demo, but he didn't and already asked YMO for a 100 percent ,not a 50 before send YMO a demo. read his book or interviews, or some articles. plus Jackson have done something on their song without their permit is already an illegal or what.
kenichisaitohchenii 1 year ago
It isn't plagiarism if credit is given to the original creator which was YMO. MJ added lyrics. He also received 50% of the song writing (copyright) when Eric Clapton did his version. Credit had been given to the YMO and the song writers. Go read the credits in the new "Michael" album.

I like this one AND MJ's. You gotta respect the original. Get over yourselves.
MJ's version got it right as far as sampling goes.

the fact that even Billy Jean and some others sounds like YMO, the whole their back arrangement. perhaps thriller was planning to arrenge the full album more electrical sound, just like this ver, what the YMO had as their own original sound.

the Jackson version.
kenichisaitohchenii 1 year ago
this song what you hear here didn't even released until the late 2010, a month ago. and Jackson even didn't exist at the time. the fact is a fact.

This IS the original! Doh!

Why are people going back & forth about this? YMO made the song, MJ & Q liked it and asked if they could record it with MJ's added lyrics. Please explain the debate....PS...Eric Claptons version is terrible. The lyrics & sound do not fit his style.
frednichols 1 year ago 6
@frednichols Just think for a moment YMO is from Japan and Sony is from Japan ! They all payed very well believe me ! Mike wrote The Lyrics but never released this song Sony did that and Eric Clapton could not sing this song without authorization of Sony ! This is why Sony sucks !!
InferocitoMustang 10 months ago
@InferocitoMustang Your comment is just dumb. Ofcourse you would need authorization from Sony. Why does that make them suck? It's a business.
frednichols 8 months ago
@frednichols You didn't understand my comment but it's okay bad english :) Like you said it's only business unfortunately !!
InferocitoMustang 7 months ago
@frednichols I just want to say when MJ didn't release this song because it's not his why was Sony made that mistake ? Only because of money !! When Mike died of course !
InferocitoMustang 7 months ago
MJ did not plagarise this song you thicko.. Do you really think sony would reveal this song on an album if it was?? KNOW YOUR FACTS!! WILLCRAZIESHOULDBEINAMENTALHOME

both the YMO and Ryuichi Sakamoto,as a solo artist are never ever making money with this issue what Jackson had left. he doesn't have a piano of his own at his flat in New York. because of the rent. and people who are Behind Michael Jackson makes cash with his song. too many Japanese artists can't get pay ,because You guys never buy their music. buy their CDS sometimes.
kenichisaitohchenii 1 year ago
OMG....Michael was always ahead of his time. Just like this group which I'm sorry to say I had never heard of before. This is whats hot now and obviously influenced so many big artist now. For Michael to cover this song is such a compliment to the group but I wonder it they didn't approve back in the 80's and thats why it wasn't released. hmmm?
Well theyre makin money now. I love it!!!!!!!! It's truly Michael.

Y pensar que conoci la orquesta por Michael Jackson! me fascina! :D
mimaja25 1 year ago
I must be honest and admit all my ignorance: I did not know of the existence of this awesome Japanese Electronic Orchestra!! If even one as big as Michael Jackson (the King Of Pop) has gone "so far" to look for a base and then work on it and make a hit single, there is a reason.... :-)

so how long will it take to be a little more quiet than now ..... a year or could it be even more.....

you lot need to realize that this is the original version of 'behind the mask'. you can say MJ's, or Greg Phillinganes', or Eric Clapton's versions are better, but without the original, none of these covers would exist.
give this version of the song and YMO the respect they deserve

@bm5891 yes. why can't people either appreciate how a song grows & evolves over time? Sometimes it's best to treat originals & their covers as if they are different animals, rather than get obsessed with what is the 'best version' nonsense!
anthonythirteen 1 year ago 2
@bm5891 Yes.. But Michael Jackson FUCKING ROCKS ! So yea...
FillionDollarSmile 11 months ago
@bm5891 No you are wrong it's not a cover - Michael asked to the author permission to make his own version and rewrite the lyrics, and Sakamato immediatly agreed and sent the title to Michael, so yes the song we hear on this video is Sakamato but the lyrics on Michael's version are differents- And I can tell you that for having the last album "Michael", Sakamoto has the credit he deserves as songwriter for "Behind the Mask".
misshisvoice 11 months ago
@misshisvoice um, yes thats what a cover is, an artists own version of a song from another artist. just because MJ rewrote lyrics does not mean the song is not a cover.
are you seriously that stupid?
bm5891 11 months ago
@bm5891 Totally agree
But I personaly think if it was: this cover+MJ's voice, it's would a BOMB!!!
And don't really like MJ's instrumental, maybe 'cause it he's producers that composed it...
Well, just writing to say that I agree w/ u, and I really respect both MJ and YMO
