@bostonbruins4 wow - that shows all the class you lack. You are making other Bruins fans look bad, especially the ones who have paid their respects in comments below. i would not even rejoice is Chara was killed in a car accident tomorrow because he is a dad like me.
The ovation actually went on for 16 minutes- the longest ovation given to a hockey player! Monsieur Richard definitely deserved this! RIP Rocket, Go Habs Go!!
@musiclovingchick6 - Hi :-) no, it was just under 7 minutes. 16 minutes is what a Vancouver journalist said a few years ago. The video here is uncut and unedited. Many like to believe that the Koivu ovation could not have been longer than the Rocket ovation, so they have added minutes over the years (just like the distance the Rocket skated with a player on his back has increased over the years). Goes to show how the Rocket is not a mere mortal anymore, but an icon with a very strong mythology.
To all the Leafs' fans who commented positively about this video, I just wanted to say that you all showed alot of class. I am a huge habs fan and I love the rivalry with the Leafs. I loved watching both teams growing up. What brings us all together is the tradition our Teams have and the love we all have for this great game of hockey. Cheers and good luck in the 2011-2012 season.
@habbyscorner i love how people like you think we are rivals but hockey Traditon is something that brings every one together have much more respect for Maple leafs fans then Boston hope this rivalry lives on till the end of time
when he retired with over 500 nobody even had 400... thats a sign of greatness ohh and only 50 game seasons not 82 like now waynes record wouldnt be there
First player to score 50 goals in 50 games, first player to score 500 goals and to this day he scored more then any other Habs player. Respect people and don't forget whos one of the greatest if not the greatest player ever to put on a habs uniform.
I'm a Leafs fan forever but I remembered watching this live and this part got me all teary eyed. Even now when I watch it, I get teary too. =(
If ever a player deserved such an amazing ovation it would be him and I think its awesome that he was alive to experience it before he passed on a few years later.
This man deserved every minute of the ovation. Inspiring! A true celebration of the best aspects of our species; mankind occasionally reaches beyond itself and produces a champion.
Super !
@Sizzmaster6985 They did not tear down Maple Leaf Gardens. It is till in use, adapted for other uses. You would have been correct to mention the other Great Arena, "The Madhouse on Madison" Chicago Stadium..
A truly deserving ovation for the Rocket. To pour your blood, sweat and tears for a team and reshape the way the game was played. A truly fitting honour. Wish I could have seen him play. A true legend! If there is ever any doubt that this is Canada's game, you see why now.
wow 5 thums down that sad that truley shows the problem with our modern world, some people don tlike harmony. its like they dont want any video on youtube to be 100% thumbs up they cant live with that
The Rocket is simply the Babe Ruth of hockey. I'm too young to have seen him play but old timers tell me he was an absolute terror on the ice. Nobody ever played the game as intense. He single-handedly made hockey a world class sport...
To all people from USA or the ROC (Rest of Canada), especially those who hate the HABS (I hate the Bruins and the Leafs, so I don't mind really), when you show respect for a guy like the "Rocket", it shows the real sport spirit that should be part of all of us. Let's the competition go on, but show respect for athletes who deserve it, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe and so many mores... GO HABS GO (but, for this year, GO CANUCKS GO, bring the cup back home.... please...)
i remember when maple leaf gardens was closing and in all the commericals they were all saying they plan to not only beat the 10 min standing ovation that rocket richard got but destroy it, lmao. What a joke that was they didnt even get a 5 min for any leaf alumi.
Simply magic. This is often my answer to the question, "If you could go back and watch any game, any concert, through-out history, what would it be?" March 11th, 1996 at the Montreal Forum.
In the National Film Board of Canada documentary, "The Rocket", Richard wondered if, as he aged and grew old, people would still remember him. Maurice got his answer that night.
I'm leafs fan and even I could never thumb this down. Rocket and the old Habs are what this game these days misses. NHL today needs to embrace the hero's like this more. Montreal always does it with class.
He wasn't just an amazing hockey player. He had character. He fought for a place in the sun for himself and for all the other Québecer hockey players. He fought to tell the world that we were no longer going to accept being the white niggers of America. This ovation was to say thank you for this hope and vision. Merci Richard. On t'aime et on se souviens de toi.
I was there. Every time the applause would start to fade, it would swell up, again, and again , and again. And again... I saw the Rocket play on TV in 1960, his last year. I had a great-uncle with a lot of privleges, and the Canadiens were #1. I looked around the Forum that night, and figured 90% of the people there never even saw that much. And still this. When the Molson Center opened, the Habs Alumni loge was nextdoor. I got to sit next to him (quietly) and watch a few games. Lucky...
very significant moment in our city history. when they planned this ceremony they never though the fans would give that long of a standing ovation. Even the rocket seemed suprised by the sheer magnitude of admiration, appreciation, and respect we showed to him on that day. He wasnt known for being emotional at all and he had tears in his eyes.
I dont think any other city has it in them to love and treat a hero like this
i wish i was born in the 40s so i could see maurice richard play. hes such a great hockey player. too bad i was too young when the rocket died. YOU WILL BE MISSED. THE ROCKET WE SHOULD START A RELIGION WITH YOU AS THE GOD!!! NO OFFENSE BUT GIONTA DOESNT WORTH SHIT COMPARED TO MAURICE ! ON TADORE MAURICE
Thanks for uploading this cause i never see it since the day my dad bring to the Forum to see this game, i was 11 years old at that time and i stand up and applause the whole ovation , the only time i see my dad cry.
I'm a big Leafs fan and I'm too young to remember this, much less Richard on the ice. But I get misty-eyed watching this. He clearly meant so much to an entire people - nothing else in hockey compares to this. Thank you so much for this upload. The woman at the end wiping away tears, the Canadien players in awe and disbelief. It's truly amazing. Almost makes me wish I was a Habs fan, just so I could take part in moments like this.
@XBillums Well, it's never too late to change teams... besides, it's not like your Leafs will make the playoffs...although, they gave it a good shot tonight!
Loved the little boy and the teary lady near the end of the video. He will never forget seeing The Rocket. And she was undoubtedly thinking of her parents and others as she paid tribute to him.
The Rocket came to Boston to represent Les Canadiens at the last game ever played at Boston Garden, September, 1995. We had no idea he was coming. What a privilege for Bruins fans to not only see him, but to be able to honor him with a 1-minute ovation of our own: "They called him The Rocket..."
Hockey goes beyond stats, because hockey is a game played on the ice and not on paper. Many players may have better stats than Mr.Richard but he will always remain the greatest player in history.
RIP Maurice Richard, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED!
In 1972 The Rocket coached the Quebec Nordiques for their first 1 or 2 games. I was at the opener at the old Cleveland Arena. It wasn't this long, but he easily got the longest ovation of any person there that night. They kept the spotlight on him and it was a real education for me about his greatness.
I still get a lump in my throat watching this. I'm a Leafs fan, BUT I still respect tradition. If there is one thing the Canadiens have, it's TRADITION. Anybody who gives this video a thumbs down is nothing but an asshole loser. The Rocket would have eaten any modern day NHL "star" for breakfast. No question. One of the GREATEST....ever.
Merci Maurice.
i cant believe this has been 15 years allready.....seems so surreal.........Not a Habs fan...but the Rocket defines class.....great ovation for the legend...RIP
A lot of People says that Maurice Richard isn't the Greatest Hockey Player but if you look how the league was protecting im , you will understand that even with that he was scoring a Lot Of Goal ..
I live in Ontario. I was born in Montreal but moved here in 1983. My dad was older when he had me so he was born in Montreal in 1930 and lived there most of his adult life.
As a Ontario Habs fan I can say this. No matter how long you spent there you will always be a Habs fans in your heart forever. I grew up cheering for Roy with my father and loved every second of it. When the Rocket died we packed up and went to Montreal. A city that was shut down in mourning. He is and will always be missed.
As a Bruin fan, I have to laugh at anyone who disses the ovation received by Rocket Richard. The only reason to diss the ovation would be because there might be a few other players (most notably Jean Beliveau and perhaps Guy Lafleur) who deserved similar ovations. But Rocket was the iconic player of his era for the iconic team - the equivalent of Babe Ruth for the Yankees. He WAS the Canadiens in the 1940s and 1950s. He WAS the Babe Ruth of hockey. NOT Wayne Gretzky or Bobby Orr...
@eggrollrocks one of the dislikes is probably Gordie Howe he and The Rocket used to hate each other and also the ghost of Conn Smythe probably clicked dislike also
damn i was 3 and a half and i remember watching this... c'est quelque chose que tu n'oublie pas... une legende pour toujours. RIP Rocket... your spirit lives on
@SOLIDSNAKEXXX360 How the hell am i a jackass i said he scored 50 goals. The seasons then was 50 games thats why i said it. Your just a dumb 15 year old that thinks you know it all about NHL and the montreal canadiens
@SOLIDSNAKEXXX360 I said he scored 50 goals. I said 50 games because there are 50 games in a season your a dumb 15 year old that thinks he knows it all about the Montreal Canadiens
here's the thing we had tickets for years in the reds, just 2, but i saw so many good games, all the Canadiens of the 60's 70's. saw Bobby Orr the best player ever. They made a mistake moving to the bell center. Its just not our rink. you can bring out the past only so many times. The Canadiens are just another team now, and not a very good one.
This was like seeing Babe Ruth for the last time. If there was one player other than Gretzky that is the Greatest Hockey Player of all time, it is Maurice (Rocket) Richard, I thing he was better than Gordie Howe.
I only started watching hockey properly during last year's playoffs and have been a Habs fan since, even though most of my Toronto friends would kick my ass for that (kind of the opposite of 'The Sweater', except I bought my own Canadiens jersey). I have only watched The Sweater two nights ago and have already seen it three or four times. This video has brought tears to my eyes as well even though I'm so new to Hockey I only found out about Richard's career a few days ago. This is very touching!
I grew up in Detroit watching Gordie Howe and I think he was the best all-around player ever. That said, from the blue line in, nobody will ever come close to the Rocket. He was a force that just could not be denied. Modern players don't come close to matching his will t

Merci Maurice.

Not to piss in anybody's Corn Flakes, because Maurice was, indeed, "l'idole d'un peuple".
But if it hadn't been for Zolder, Gilles would have done just as good in our hearts. He just didn't last long enough.
Maurice was, and still is, our popular hero, but Gilles came so close to do the same thing as Maurice. Tough luck...
I don't miss Maurice because he had a good and fair life, but I miss Gilles, because he was short-changed.
But I am still a great CH fan. :O))

here's the thing we had tickets for years in the reds, just 2, but i saw so many good games, all the Canadiens of the 60's 70's. saw Bobby Orr the best player ever.
