I saw Styx in concert from the Styx 2 album to the Kilroy was Here album then again on the Return to Paradise tour and you are right. Dennis was Styx. Tommy did not like the fact that Dennis made productions out of the 2 albums (Paradise and Kilroy) and that is eventually what cause the breakup the first times. Tommy would have been better in a band like Damn Yankees for a long period but got tired of Nugent too.
State Street Sadie (intro)/AD 1928/Rockin the Paradise/Blue Collar Man/The Grand Illusion/Lights/Lady (with Dennis piano solo)/Tommy Acoustic Solo/Crystal Ball/Suite Madame Blue/Snowblind/Too Much Time On My Hands/Great White Hope/State Street Sadie/The Best of Times/Foolin' Yourself/JY Solo/Miss America/Bane/Renegade (with drum solo)/Come Sail Away/Borrowed Time/Half Penny Two Penny/AD 1958/State Street Sadie and Grand Finale (tape)
I agree with you Dennis was Styx. Styx from 1977 to 1984 took names and kicked ass on stage. Watching this show and the Largo show from 1981 showed Dennis was the driving force in Styx. Also, DDY was lone member of Styx with head screwed on right as he didn't smoke nor do any drugs nor drink. When they fired him, that was as bad as when Phil Collins left Genesis (at least his split was amicable and he returned for one last tour in 2007).
What an incredible song! Such talented band members. Remember seeing Dennis DeYoung in the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar in Regina, Sask. in the early nineties. Fabulous!
I played guitar professionally for a long time and I never did this. I took pride in playing the parts right and yes, I played some gigs 5 hours a night. This one MAYBE lasted 2. Tommy is wussing out here for sure.
He IS playing JY's part during the verse vocals but he totally choked after JY said TOMMY! hahah Even if his stomp box wasn't on, he couldn't played SOMETHING. prob wasn't expecting JY to turn over the lead to him.
LOL.. yeah.. it's NOT one of his better moments.. gotta wonder if that wasn't how they rehearsed it.. I always loved Tommy.. I thought he brought a lot to the band.. even if he had his DUD moments.. :)
Shaw's solo is impeccable. How he manages to transit from a feedback dominated heavy metal solo to a wah wah dominated balladic solo with such suave is beyond me. It's brilliant.
From what i've read (on Wikipedia, mind you, so take it with a grain...) the seeds for Dennis Deyoung's disillusionment and departure from the band began with the Kilroy Was Here album. He wanted the band to go in a different direction...which is VERY evident on that album. i think they couldn't have found a more perfect fit than Larry Gowan. He's at least the musician that DeYoung is, and he appears to be genuinely happy performing.
Besides...Styx is still touring. Where's DeYoung at?
Deyoung got kicked out of the band for a month in 1980. The tensions came with fame. Gowan is good, but he can't write like Deyoung, who is still touring and making albums. Desert Moon is a staple of any true classic rock fan's library.
Always thought that was the best song on the album. And you even got part of State Street Sadie in there. Five stars ain't enough for this masterpiece.
Lol remembering my country bumpkin college roommate practically falling out of his chair in shock the first time he heard "YES, MRS. CLEAVER: YOU'RE SON'S HOME TO STAY! We all know it's the American Way!"
Tommy shaw is SOOOO underated. His solos always ripped and fit the music instead of just being some notes. Check out his outro solo on Queen of spades or the solo on renegade.
Are you sure? On the album 'peices of eight'?I never new. How about the rest of the album. I like the solos on most all the songs. I always thought it was tommy.
True. I read in Guitar magazine several years ago that JY was supposed to do the lead on this song, but Tommy asked if he could because he wanted to go wild. Tommy had played lead on the more structured tunes, while JY was the wilder rocker. This showed Tommy Shaw in a new light I believe.
youtube should have more ways for people to communicate to each other....like this site gagla.com_ GAGLA DOT COM, it even has a webcam chat, how cool is that?
Interesting to watch the historic moment in which Dennis DeYoung loses his musketeer prog moustache. Never thought he did it in front of the audience... end of an era, indeed.
For their Wooden Nickel albums, he was one of the primary singers, and sang in a primarily high voice. After Curlewski left and Shaw joined, he went to backup and then lead on a few.
holy crap!!! talk about memory lane. i saw this show in Edmonton Canada so many years ago. the show looked just like this. only thing different is camera angles. ah the sound; the lights; the sheer musicianship; the smell of hemp...thx so much styxtoury for posting this. 5 stars and favored for the memories.
blinking bloody brilliant!!!! Thanks for posting all these '82 videos. Tommy looks about 12 yrs old. JY is freaking gorgeous. Styx at their best-rocking out!
First appearance of a clean-shaven Dennis DeYoung. He has remained clean shaven ever since this encore. Great number. It's actually Half Penny-Two Penny/AD 1958.

On the PoE album, JY did solos on "GReat White Hope", first solo to "Lords of the Ring", "Queen of Spades" and "Renegade". Tommy did the rest.

Things you learn as you get older. I always thougth JY was a great rocker and wondered why he didn't do more lead work.

Styx always shared leads to showcase each member throughout the song. It has as much to do about the live performance as anything else.
