lol we all have silly mistakes when learning...but that's ok that's how you learn right? Things to remember...heels down, chest up, eyes looking where you wanna go, and leg on. :) have fun!
this paint is always really hard to get moving soo dont blame this rider a lot of people have trouble on getting him going still it is just his personality
To the idiot (HorsesRcul) who posted it takes 30 wacks to get 'Peppy' going ...... maybe you should consider less 'whacking' and more training .. one of you needs to understand horse language; I'm betting it;s you, and if you actually hit your horse 30 times to make it do something .... there's an issue.
~lol~ I cannot tell you how many times I've fallen on my rear after riding. I've been riding for over 30 years. Come back after riding in the winter and I'm cold, can no longer feel my feet (despite warm boots and wool socks) and fall on my butt when I hit the ground. Don't feel bad, even the experienced riders do that!
I'm shure this is a long time ago, and maybe you know that if you want the horse to trot and stuff, sit there and and don't just kick her/his sides, have your legs ready to squeeze her/him a little when he slows down, because when you kick their sides, it might be too late, and the horse has already slowed down. And the horses thinks it's boring to only be kicked, and maybe in a while they will stop listen when you kick them. Keep your leg on! :)
instead on tapping his neck, try ticking his bum with the whip :) especially if its a long dressage one with tassles on the end. keeps lazy horses on their toes lol :) cute horse tho
Oh lol that is the point where i would take both reins in one hand (depending on the horse, maybe some mane so i don't lose my balance or catch him in the mouth), raise the whip and SMACK on the butt! not very nice, but exceptionally effective :)
I have days like that sometimes, especially when your riding a stubborn horse. a good smack on the behind and putting your heels down will help. It just takes a little learning.
Everyone telling her to give the horse a good smack.... I think at this point she wouldn't be able to keep her balance if the horse reacted strongly. Everyone needs to start somewhere and I'm sure she's gotten much better since.
Agreed. I think people take for granted the co-ordination it actually takes to use a whip properly and forget how unbalanced we all felt the first time we rode a horse.
I'm sure you've improved, but just incase the only things I can say to work on are as others have said, USE YOUR WHIP its there for a reason. Also, really keep your leg on. And, try to keep a closer contact to your horse's mouth, he'll be able to better understand what you wnat to do.
this video was put up like 2 freaking years ago im bloody sure se and her pony have improved heaps ok look this is in the past the lesson is done and they have moved on from this hopefully :)
ok why the heck carry a stick if ya not going to use it and your basicly just sitting in the two point withought any leg keep ya leg on. Otherwise really adorable horse im sure your instructors have helped they seem to be very hands on. Good luck and keep working not giving up is the goal :D
What are yall talking about? She fell on the ground? And whoever said keeping a horse is cheap or something? WOW! I have 26 thoroughbreds so I should know and MyFishHasFeet is sooooo correct!
hhmmm.. you probably dont know anything about the cost to keep a horse, 2,000 dollars is what it costs, no doubt about it! I pay loads of attention to my ponies, groom them tack them myself. you people obviously dont know how to ride! if my pony was testing me like this I would much rather smack it hard once or twice and have a great alert pony from that point on, or you could sit there and let the pony stroll along at his speed, letting him choose everything.
That horse needs to be taught a lesson that you are riding him, not the other way around. Put some spurs on that pony! First of all, you should use your voice as a command, then cluck if he doesn't respond, squeeze, then kick, tap him where your heel is, smack him, get mad at him, smack him on the shoulder, and when he responds after the first smack, pat him on the neck for responding to that punishment, so he'll learn that he needs to get going when you tell him to.
i'm pretty sure getting angry at a horse is not a good idea. chances are likely the human is not going to win. you should be calm when correcting. if you use anger and do all the things you described; it spoils the horse. just puttin it out there.
you need get your horse straight. hes thinking its just a stroll around the barn. dont just tap him with the crop. give him a good pop. ok well this is hard to explain but The way we teach it at my barn is in 3 steps, ask, tell and then demand... if you continue to kick and use the crop you are contiuously giving the same amount of pressure.... clearly that doesnt work. Your horse will eventually tune it all out. So my suggestion to you is go back to step one, after 3 doesnt work so that your horse doesnt get discouraged. This is not meant as a mean comment. Please dont take it offensively. :)
if i wer riding tht horse i wood be giving it strong impulsive kicks if it didnt respond to little nudges you shood just keep giving him stronger aids every time he dosnt respond and if they stilll just laze about use your crop and give him a tap on the bum
LOL If my horse EVER stopped like that i would grab my crop and start wacking him on the butt, luckliy my horse is not lazy and thats a great thing unlike ur pony...
why do people call a whip a crop that annoys me soz but it does i no i'm from england and we call it a whip and americans call it a crop but a crop is somethin which grows in a field and a whip is a thing u hit things with!soz
i think a whip sounds weird because it sounds like something you totally POUND something with, and no one wants to beat a horse to a pulp, thats just horrible.
so hahahaha we both have our preferences, i guess thats just the way life is.
Well i'm from the US of A and we call it a crop and the things that grows in the field i call a plants, so i guess we all just call it different things :)
I was hacking with my friend a number of years back n' we had to pull over to one side to allow a truck full of VERY HOT looking army lads to pass. Imagine how much of an idiot I felt when my rein snapped so I 'popped' off my pony to sort it out. But instead, I slipped off my saddle n' landed straight on my backside! I felt like such an idiot cos I got plastered in wet mud! hehe.
lol. my instructor is from south africa so she has a very thick accent, and whenever a pony is being a booger, she always says '''cmon now give that pony a crack!'' lol, but just the way her accent is, it is really funny.
If he doesn respond to you immediatly then try doing excersices around the arena. Just simply walk trot tranistions to get him in tuned with you. I do that befor every lesson with my horse and by the end of the lesson I just have to think about trotting and she does it. For lazy horses I would use a crop. It will be lot easier for you!
All I will say is just to keep practicing, keep going to lessons( your trainer knows YOU and your HORSE the best) Lol I have had those days were it just dosen't go well at all(fell on my butt to in front of a Devon judge in my EQ class! I want to join your barn, lol not everyone is a stick, lol my trainer is constantly getting on to me about sliming down to impress the judges! But I place top always. It is always fun to tell her who helping paying her bills, lol!!
More leg would be very helpful, but when they don't immediately trot or canter. Bump them with your leg a little harder. If they still don't respond you tap them with the crop but you use more pressure with your legs while you do this so that it reinforces your meaning when you push your calves into their sides: "to go".
first off..people are so mean. i have been riding at this farm for almost 12 years. and the pony in this video is like 5 or 6 so he is a baby. and secondly from seeing this pony go he is a brat and if u dont tell him who's boss nothing good comes out of it.. all i want to say is u go girl! and Betsy is an awesome trainner she knows so much! dont listen to people...obwiously they dont know the pony or the situation.
well MegS109 some horses hate being whipped behind the leg, because some horses wer never trained with a whip! Not just the speedy ones, but loads of other types of horses. Like my old horse, if you ever whipped him behind your leg he would rodeo
y do people insist on using thier crop on the horses shoulder? u use it behind ur leg. the horses r trained to move away from ur leg...so do u kick the horses shoulder too? just a thought
Wow you really need to learn how to use a whip. Like HorseShoez09 said it is used for an extension of the leg. I have been riding for six years so I should know.
Smacking on the horse isn't the correct way to use a whip. It's an extension of the leg, and should be used behind the lower leg. Don't blame a horse for not responding to a tap on the shoulder.
by da way incase ur wandering u know jockys, well they dont nesseserely smack the horse they just twirl it in the air to make a swooshing noise witch makes the horse go faster...thats what i was told anyway!
EmmaAnderson? Your not much of a rider if you can't name a bridle. lol. I agree with most people, your horse is stunning but am I right in thinking he/she is a school horse? The horses I work with are like that, they literally take the p*ss with riders who don't RIDE them, but mind you I can tell from your other vids that you are a good rider. x
Ok, so everyone thinks I'm being encredibly mean here.... And NO, I dont go hitting the horse at a SHOW, but if they showing attidtude in training and even spurs dont help you then you have to discipline a little. Im not a phyco who beats horses to death or something! Im going to nationals because my ponies and I work great together and LISTEN to each other. Besides the whole point was to just give this girl some encouragement that she can whip her horse once and a while, so get off my case!
well you do what you do. I'm not mean as a matter of fact! I'm going to hunter nationals this year-how do you think I got there? Thats right, by toughening up and having what it takes to RIDE A HORSE! and thankyou, samcourt1313 for supporting my "comment" :D
actually, whipping a horse in a HUNTER nationals isn't such a great idea if you want to place... if your leg isn't strong enough to make the horse go then buy a small pair of spurs. i find it hilarious to imagine someone going around a hunter course whipping the horse because its going too slow. whipping a horse doesn't make you "tough" it just makes you an ineffective rider unless its for punishment.
you need to learn how to whip the horse! I show in circuit A shows and trust me...you need to hit the horse to get a good time. But its okay it happened to me alot when i was younger :) i hope i dont sound mean..
uhh u dont sound mena u sound incredibly abusive to ur horses or ponies htat u ride using a whip is only if ur horses doesnt obey u the first few time and the if he stil doesnt do it then then u have or can tap if not wallop the living shit outta them
I agree with az09mcr. I think it's horrible to whip a horse. Sometimes it's necessasary, but I wouldn't whip the horse to make it go faster. I think its animal abuse.
OMG your horse is falling back to walk from trot or from canter to trot and it wont listen to ur leg aids you are supposed to whip it its what any good riders are taught if it was animal cruelty then they wouldnt teach it you!
Alot of people do horrible things to animals. Just because people teach that, doesn't mean its right. Its fine to give a horse a small hit ONCE to get their attention, but you don't need to be hitting them over and over again.
canteringaimlessly, im not tryin to make an argument here but if u got put on a pony that bronked ,bucked ,and reared would you whip it and show it whos boss, or would u just sit there and let it take the jip out of u? i would smak it, but its ur choise so im not gonna tell u what to do!thx
I ride a horse like that, except he's a thoroughbred ;DD. && No, actually I don't whip him when he does that. I might hit him once, but usually I just say really loud "Bad boy!" && Do it over and over until he gets it right. I know hitting him would probably get the point across better, I'm just not that kind of person. I can't stand hitting a horse. But that's just my opinion.
horses arent ment to be taught to litsen through brutality. They should have a respect for their rider. period. ya know, horsemanship? you shouldnt beat them into thinking your boss. they should accept it.
I'd rather see some one smacking their horse to make them go forward that bruising their sides by booting them with their leg and making them go numb and eventually dead to the leg.
so I'm going to add to the Parelli thing. I personally don't care for that training at all. I ride my horses the way I want to, that works for them. I don't need some stupid ass guy coming and saying that 'I'm not listening to my horse' or whatever. I know my horses better than anyone else. Kicking a horse, does not hurt them, spurs, if used properly, don't hurt them. Neither do whips. Get over it.
Yes, he can ride his horse without a bit but did you know he jumps foals? There's a picture on the net if you doubt me.
Never mind the fact that horses shouldn't be even free jumped until they're at least 3 or 4, not jumped with a rider until 5.
And I also don't like the fact that he charged like 40$ for a halter that I can get (Read: MAKE!) for all of 3$. To me, that kills any respect for him that I might have had.
hey "ponyluva07"- my horses are all parelli trained.... and i don't know what world you're living in, but parelli does kick his horses.... in fact he uses spurs... so why don't you pay attention? but his kicks are descrete, and he uses whats called leg muscles.... ever heard of them? didn't think so. so when you learn to pay attention, and mabey watch a clinic or something, then you can post that comment. i think someone has fed you lies. i am who i am.
this happened to me once. i went from riding a 14.6hh pony for a week to a lesson on a 17.2hh saddle bred. same thing, i just caught my self and fell foreward into the horse. haha he was staring at me like wtf?!
Juts cos she kicks her horse doesnt mean shes mean. anyway parelli isnt THAT amazing, most horses dont need to be trained that way if theyre trained well and kindly and properly, nudging a horse in the sides is how they are trained to go forward
ive done tht b4 except once when uigot off my horse the stirrup got caught on my pants and they ripped down to my hip lol. i rode anyway though~ great vid!
Your horse is LLAAZZYY haha i've got one too but use a crop cause if he keeps breaking on you he'll just get worse it would be like a person saying this "wait she's not making me so why do anything" he needs a lil' smack to tell him its time to work not stop
i carry a training whip, and i tap my horse every time he starts to get lazy, he just goes forward and isn't upset. if he was really upset he would try and buck me off. it just reminds him to pick his feet up and wake him up a bit, what whip where you carrying?
haha, I've done that before when I tried to get off in the winter. xD

It should not take '30 wacks' to get a horse going. LISTEN TO YOUR HORSE!
It's either in pain, and not wanting to work, too old or needs training.

here is the order you need to work him in
1. cluck/kiss

3. kick
4. kick harder
5. tap on shoulder with cropp
6. smack on the butt with crop
its there so use it

LOL If my horse EVER stopped like that i would grab my crop and start wacking him on the butt, luckliy my horse is not lazy and thats a great thing unlike ur pony...
HiStepping 3 years ago
why do people call a whip a crop that annoys me soz but it does i no i'm from england and we call it a whip and americans call it a crop but a crop is somethin which grows in a field and a whip is a thing u hit things with!soz
horseluver7896 3 years ago
im from oz and i call it a crop.
i think a whip sounds weird because it sounds like something you totally POUND something with, and no one wants to beat a horse to a pulp, thats just horrible.
so hahahaha we both have our preferences, i guess thats just the way life is.
kanumbra 3 years ago
hehe i guess so =) u no i dowe use me whip (crop) very often cause i dow like usin it =)
horseluver7896 3 years ago
haha either do i :)
kanumbra 3 years ago

Legs R 2 far back, leaning 4word, not kiking hard enough, horse's layzey.
XRACER995 3 years ago 2
More leg would be very helpful, but when they don't immediately trot or canter. Bump them with your leg a little harder. If they still don't respond you tap them with the crop but you use more pressure with your legs while you do this so that it reinforces your meaning when you push your calves into their sides: "to go".
Pretty horse though. Good luck :]

iitsdefchar27 3 years ago
first off..people are so mean. i have been riding at this farm for almost 12 years. and the pony in this video is like 5 or 6 so he is a baby. and secondly from seeing this pony go he is a brat and if u dont tell him who's boss nothing good comes out of it.. all i want to say is u go girl! and Betsy is an awesome trainner she knows so much! dont listen to people...obwiously they dont know the pony or the situation.
iitsdefchar27 3 years ago
well MegS109 some horses hate being whipped behind the leg, because some horses wer never trained with a whip! Not just the speedy ones, but loads of other types of horses. Like my old horse, if you ever whipped him behind your leg he would rodeo
maybehorses 3 years ago
i said just a thougt......plus most horses r trained to move away from ur leg....or at least the ones that r trained well!
MegS109 3 years ago
y do people insist on using thier crop on the horses shoulder? u use it behind ur leg. the horses r trained to move away from ur leg...so do u kick the horses shoulder too? just a thought
MegS109 3 years ago
u only use it on the sholder to wake it p or tell it off...exuse my spelling:$
horseymad0051 3 years ago
well whatever....thats the way u learned... but thats not how we do things....im not saying ur wrong just u have a different opinion.
MegS109 3 years ago
Wow you really need to learn how to use a whip. Like HorseShoez09 said it is used for an extension of the leg. I have been riding for six years so I should know.
dominos91258 3 years ago
nice fall
butterscotch567 3 years ago
Smacking on the horse isn't the correct way to use a whip. It's an extension of the leg, and should be used behind the lower leg. Don't blame a horse for not responding to a tap on the shoulder.
HorseShoez09 3 years ago
by da way incase ur wandering u know jockys, well they dont nesseserely smack the horse they just twirl it in the air to make a swooshing noise witch makes the horse go faster...thats what i was told anyway!

horseymad0051 - Yup. They wave it next to their faces. It's called "showing them the whip".
jeanetta84 3 years ago
EmmaAnderson? Your not much of a rider if you can't name a bridle. lol. I agree with most people, your horse is stunning but am I right in thinking he/she is a school horse? The horses I work with are like that, they literally take the p*ss with riders who don't RIDE them, but mind you I can tell from your other vids that you are a good rider. x
Sazzers0x 3 years ago
Ok, so everyone thinks I'm being encredibly mean here.... And NO, I dont go hitting the horse at a SHOW, but if they showing attidtude in training and even spurs dont help you then you have to discipline a little. Im not a phyco who beats horses to death or something! Im going to nationals because my ponies and I work great together and LISTEN to each other. Besides the whole point was to just give this girl some encouragement that she can whip her horse once and a while, so get off my case!
RabbitsRmyLife 3 years ago
well you do what you do. I'm not mean as a matter of fact! I'm going to hunter nationals this year-how do you think I got there? Thats right, by toughening up and having what it takes to RIDE A HORSE! and thankyou, samcourt1313 for supporting my "comment" :D
RabbitsRmyLife 3 years ago
actually, whipping a horse in a HUNTER nationals isn't such a great idea if you want to place... if your leg isn't strong enough to make the horse go then buy a small pair of spurs. i find it hilarious to imagine someone going around a hunter course whipping the horse because its going too slow. whipping a horse doesn't make you "tough" it just makes you an ineffective rider unless its for punishment.
Luego87 3 years ago
ya i agree with the rabbitrmylife person lol
samcourt1313 3 years ago
you need to learn how to whip the horse! I show in circuit A shows and trust me...you need to hit the horse to get a good time. But its okay it happened to me alot when i was younger :) i hope i dont sound mean..
RabbitsRmyLife 3 years ago
uhh u dont sound mena u sound incredibly abusive to ur horses or ponies htat u ride using a whip is only if ur horses doesnt obey u the first few time and the if he stil doesnt do it then then u have or can tap if not wallop the living shit outta them
az09mcr 3 years ago
I agree with az09mcr. I think it's horrible to whip a horse. Sometimes it's necessasary, but I wouldn't whip the horse to make it go faster. I think its animal abuse.
canteringaimlessly 3 years ago
thnks lol giving a horse tap tap on the ashouldrer but like whipping them to do sumething they dont wanna do its abuse tnks
az09mcr 3 years ago
OMG your horse is falling back to walk from trot or from canter to trot and it wont listen to ur leg aids you are supposed to whip it its what any good riders are taught if it was animal cruelty then they wouldnt teach it you!
horseymad0051 3 years ago
Alot of people do horrible things to animals. Just because people teach that, doesn't mean its right. Its fine to give a horse a small hit ONCE to get their attention, but you don't need to be hitting them over and over again.
canteringaimlessly 3 years ago
did i say hit them over and over again... NO
horseymad0051 3 years ago
Its called punctuation. Please use it.
ridingisasport 3 years ago
canteringaimlessly, im not tryin to make an argument here but if u got put on a pony that bronked ,bucked ,and reared would you whip it and show it whos boss, or would u just sit there and let it take the jip out of u? i would smak it, but its ur choise so im not gonna tell u what to do!thx
horseymad0051 3 years ago
I ride a horse like that, except he's a thoroughbred ;DD. && No, actually I don't whip him when he does that. I might hit him once, but usually I just say really loud "Bad boy!" && Do it over and over until he gets it right. I know hitting him would probably get the point across better, I'm just not that kind of person. I can't stand hitting a horse. But that's just my opinion.
canteringaimlessly 3 years ago
horses arent ment to be taught to litsen through brutality. They should have a respect for their rider. period. ya know, horsemanship? you shouldnt beat them into thinking your boss. they should accept it.
WannaPerfectBody00 3 years ago
I'd rather see some one smacking their horse to make them go forward that bruising their sides by booting them with their leg and making them go numb and eventually dead to the leg.
One smack with the whip is far more effective.
sazzy925 3 years ago
I agreeeeeee
horseymad0051 3 years ago
I totally did that this summer!
Off a 14.3hh trekaner...
lol.
it was sad.
haha
so I'm going to add to the Parelli thing. Get over it.
xXxChompiexXx 3 years ago
On the Parelli debate...
To me, that kills any respect for him that I might have had.

ponyluva07, how do you think the horses does in the nature ? do they horsewhip each other ? i don't think so..
amandaaivarsson 3 years ago
hey "ponyluva07"- my horses are all parelli trained.... and i don't know what world you're living in, but parelli does kick his horses.... in fact he uses spurs... so why don't you pay attention? but his kicks are descrete, and he uses whats called leg muscles.... ever heard of them? didn't think so. so when you learn to pay attention, and mabey watch a clinic or something, then you can post that comment. i think someone has fed you lies. i am who i am.
iluvkyle1224 3 years ago
Awwh, I want a pony like yours. Slow and easy. I'd rather have a lazy butt and have to use a crop than a crazy horse you can't control. :):)
horseridinggrl54 3 years ago 2
this happened to me once. i went from riding a 14.6hh pony for a week to a lesson on a 17.2hh saddle bred. same thing, i just caught my self and fell foreward into the horse. haha he was staring at me like wtf?!
Ima09er 3 years ago
you need to learn parelli!aprelli is a program when you dont kick you horse!meanie!
ponyluva07 3 years ago
Juts cos she kicks her horse doesnt mean shes mean. anyway parelli isnt THAT amazing, most horses dont need to be trained that way if theyre trained well and kindly and properly, nudging a horse in the sides is how they are trained to go forward
xXFunkyFillyXx 3 years ago
You still need to give your horse aids no matter what you do, sitting there and doing bugger all is not parelli.
And besides, parelli is 90% common sense - not some spectacular thing that everyone makes it out to be.

i carry a training whip, and i tap my horse every time he starts to get lazy, he just goes forward and isn't upset. if he was really upset he would try and buck me off. it just reminds him to pick his feet up and wake him up a bit, what whip where you carrying?
