...is that you don't take into account that gender doesn't alter one's capacity or need to have a voice in, or a view of, society. Woman's suffrage was actually very strong in Utah. LDS women in Utah were some of the first women to have the vote in the world and, at the time, utah had the highest per capita rate of women with Ph.Ds (many many of them being Medical) from Eastern Universities We also had women in our territorial legislator, all this until the Feds took it away. You see the ERA and woman's suffrage were far from the same. Your problem here...
Why do you see marriage as an institution worthy of societal endorsement ABOVE that allocated to either single people OR to people who seek more than one partner?
..because the underlying ideology of the oath is to maximize life. That doesn't mean we force doctors to treat people as much as humanly possible. You see society can enshrine and promote and uphold ideals without having to force, or enforce, as system in which those ideals are mandated. We don't inhibit those not considered doctors from selling their goods or services, we don't condone it by allowing them the label of being an MD from an accredited university, but we don't stop them.
If one's advocacy that an ideal be enshrined and promoted by society must include a strict allegiance and enforcement of such is simply wrong-headed. It's like saying that because you have an ideal of trying to reach zero fatalities that you have to force government policy on drivers and transportation that insures that. We hold up the ideal that doctors allowed to practice must uphold the Hippocratic Oath that doesn't mean we force them to treat anyone and everyone regardless of pay simply..
This is about ideals. You make a common error, one that many make, that I'm bound (or society) to enforce something because I put forward ideals to be held up by society. That's not the case. continued...
