also, do you have any thoughts about the idea of a californian going out of state to buy a squirrel monkey and bringing it back with me? I guess I'm really more concerned with wether i need to register the monkey and prove that I'm a citizen of a state where they are legal. ANY thoughts or comments would be VASTLY appreciated
Big Props! i have been watching a good number of your videos and one thing i noticed on all of them is how you constantly have to defend yourself for having a pet monkey (which is honestly more insulting than anything I'm sure), and then i come to this one and i see a comment (presumably) flaming you in spanish, right when i thought you were going to be out of comebacks, BOOM YOU SPEAK SPANISH TOO! <3 your spirit and your monkeys.
@N1ghtT3roorz LOL thanks. I have a few tricks :-) as for CA- I would not suggest it. CA is very animal rights state. Very illegal. Someone will eventually report you and it will be confiscated. Only permits are for USDA licensed individuals/companies. A responsible breeder would not sell to you.
HI! I HAD A FEW QUESTIONS SO PLEASE ANYONE ANSWER! DO THEY BITE REALLY HARD? AND DO THEY BECOME VIOLENT AS THEY GROW UP? HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND WHITH THEM EACH DAY? SHOULD I BUY 1 OR 2?
Wont they run away outside? or are they dedicated to there masters. Could someone compare them to a dog breed I know dogs more then I know....monkeys...
you should proof read your website, i noticed several errors on the FAQ page. not spelling errors just misplaced words so spell check wont pick it up.
very informative site though! they are so cute id love to have one but sadly i just dont think i can dedicate the time such an intelligent animal would require to have a happy life.
Can you believe there was a time (1968-1972) when you could buy a live squirrel monkey mailed to your house for less than 20 bucks from an ad in a comic book?
@advenger32 I live in Miami, FL. We are required to have permits. EVERYTHING is illegal in California. There are about 20 states with bans. The rest either have no regs, or require permits.
They are not really trained to do anything. I just gave them lots of love, attention, and was firm in not allowig them to play with their teeth or bite. Just a firm no.
Aww they are so cute! I have read your website a lot and you sound like you really are someone who means it when they say you have given your life too them! I really want a monkey but don't know if I want a Squirrel Monkey or a Capuchin. The thing I am most worried about is temperment. Do you have any tips? Again great video!
Even if the monkey has no fangs and/or doesn't bite, they will crap all over the place. When in captivity, monkeys play with their feces.
They cost a fortune to take care of. Their diet has to be strictly monitored, and some of the food and animal drugs will set you back a bit. They're sensitive to human diseases, so if you have the flu, you'll end up killing the monkey.
They are a TON of work. More than most people realize. Owners need to learn their methods of communication. It takes a huge investment of time. When infants they must be with owners 24/7. They are social animals & require constant companionship, & a continued investment of time on owners part to remain tame.
Cute! Nice to see responsible ownership rather than the freakshows usin them as substitute kids. I'd really love to get a couple, either squirrels or marmosets. is it possible to take parent-reared but human-handled monkeys and make the same quality of pet out of them or do you really need them hand-reared? Also, do they tend to attack other, smaller animals (like if you had something like a pet bird or sugar glider would it be considered food)? Do they get on with other sizes of monkey?
Depends on how long it was parent reared. If you still get it at like 3-4 months then yes. Much older than that I wouldn't think so especially since squirrels develop quicker than say capuchins. As for other animals, it depends on what they are exposed to as babies. Sofie was raised around dogs & Birds without a problem. It would not be considered food, as squirrels are pretty small themselves. But if the sugar glider & squirrel interact it definitely be supervised.
About 5 grand each...and considering you really need two unless you plan on spending each and every waking moment with them, you're looking at five figures!
I have two cages in my room where they sleep at night. Each morning around 9 am I open the window in my room & they jump out to their large outdoor cage area.
If the monkey is gotten as a baby, & raised with the ferret I am sure the monkey would be OK with the ferret. Not sure of the temperament of the ferret though.
Well, First of all I hope some of you people are retired are better yet wealthy and don't need a day job. I happen to be wealthy and will probably never own a monkey the damn sons of bitches bite, and guess what? They carry E-Coli and other wonderful diseases. I strongly suggest not owning one.
I however feel that if you are able to find a vet who is willing ot remove there canines then it shouldn't be too bad when they hit sexual maturity and attempt to bite the fuck out of you!
1st, they DON'T carry e-coli. Could probably get it the same way you would. Knowledge is what it takes to properly rear a primate. Mine HAVE their canines & aren't a problem. They are 2 & 4 (at or past maturity). Before you start knocking ownership do some research. They can be loving companions for those dedicated to their care. People have no experience w primates spew all these disease etc myths. Kinda ticks me off. It does a great disservice to these wonderful animals.
Each state & county has different laws. If you really want a monkey proper research BEFORE is needed. This includes finding out what requirements are in your area. Take a day to contact you Fish & Game department, speak to an enforcement officer. Also read (yes all of it) your counties animal ordinace code. I sat for hours & read each & every word of our FL Fish & Game regulations page (caging, experience, animal classes, etc) so that I was 100% sure that I am legal.
i want one so bad my step mother wont approve of any pets i had a ferret which i took great responsobility for. but she gave it away while i was at my real moms house
Do some research. A certain species of them may endangered in their natural habitats of south America. BUT in the US they are flourishing. Mine were captive bred in the US. IMport of wild species for pets is illegal in the US. They are completely legal if you have the proper permits, which I have.
There are 8 Sub species of SM in different countries around the South America. The 3 that are endangered are from small countries in South America. The common squirrel monkey, and bolivian squirrel monkey, which are most commonly kept as pets and used in research are not an endangered species. I believe you can find this information if you do a quick google search on squirrel monkeys.
hi i just wanted to say thank you so so so so much for your website for without i would be without my squirrel monkey today he is only a baby and he is realy scared of everything so he is always sitting on my shoulder i just got him 2 weeks ago
I am glad I was able to help. Please remember that your research is never done. You should continue to learn all that you can about them. This is the best stage so take lots of pictures because it goes by fast. Will email you privately with more tips, & care information.
No Way. The squirrels mouth is tiny. But honestly I have never been bit by a cat. But cats are definitely stronger than these guys and have bigger canines which are just as sharp and needlelike. I would rather my monkeys bite me than a cat thats for sure.
No niether has ever ran away. I take them to the back porch all the time where they could run awaay if they wanted to. I think they are scared to venture off into unfamiliar areas. They really like to stay inside the house. And yes, they are fast!
If you visit her website petmonkeyinfo dot com (since you cant use URL's here) it will show aout monkey's and bitings. You'll find that Biting will not be a big problem with Squirrels if you read.
I got your message. Thanks a lot. I read joey's and sofie's page and i am def. interesed ^-^. I'm a senior and i've decided to open a savings account for 2 squirrel monkeys while i research everything i need to know while in college. Really appreciate it
