For about 25 years now, I've labored under the assumption that Bastian named the Empress "Martha" after his dead mother. That's all I could ever make out, though the name seemed purposely drowned out so each watcher could fill in the blank themselves, allowing them to enter the story, too, as it were.

Et bien d'après ce que j'ai compris, dans le livre il l'appelle "Enfant Lune", donc Moonchild en VO.
Rien ne dit que la mère de Bastien n'a pas des origines amérindiennes. Ils aiment beaucoup de genre de prénom les amérindiens.
Mais c'est une adaption, les sénaristes prennent toujours quelques libertés.

maybe, good that it is more credible in the 80s to have a name gallicized well as marina. He gives her the name of his mother of whom it is orphan but seen that it is the only moment or we hear it, it is not very clear. It is for that, that that surprised me in the VO he call her the moon shild, that seemed rather likely that it gives her the name of his mother not?

In Michael Ende's novel, on which the movie is based, "Moon Child" is indeed the name Bastian calls out. In the movie, however, this is drowned out by background noise. No doubt Petersen's intent is to get folks talking about what was really said, and, judging by the comments here, it worked pretty well.
