yes, cause in the the 40's 50's US woman's place was in the house, and her purpose was to be a good wife. and yes, there were only white people int he commercial.. and it WAS awful.
but what's the point of going over it now?
and kids chose whichever toys they want. no one tells them what to get.
however i do agree, that when they promote something 'beautiful', or beauty products, they can't always just put a white blond model as an example. t
the only sexist commercial were the one's depicting women as the housewife who's only care during the whole day was making their husbands happy, the others were simply depicting the "recognised normality" of society being that girls (given a choice) would rather play with a doll and that boys would rather play with a scalextric set. The more modern commercials do enforce gender stereotype however none are truly sexist.
2:38 I think I had something like that when I was little. We sold it at a garage sale because I couldn't figure out what to do with it. When my sister told me you were supposed to brush her hair I said something like "What? That's too boring! What else can you do with it?" I wouldn't except the fact that she couldn't do anything, and that you were to "brush her hair."
Lol gender stereotypes never stopped me paying more attention to 'boy' toy adverts - or turning to the 'boy' section of the Argos catalogue and frowning at the pink 'girl' section XD...
The lego mind storm thing was a little...weird. Why would I want to take a picture of someone in my family while they are in the shower?? that's just creepy. Anyway, most of these commercials are a bit gender stereotypical, but that's just marketing, it's how companies appeal to their desired target market. Some of these were just random children's games that don't appear to one gender in particular. The first two were the only two that were extremely sexist, but it was the 1950's so...yeah.
@pima262 Nearly all of the commercials display gender roles, or gender stereotypes. Sure they might not be sexist, but let's put this into perspective: Boys like girls, toys, games, cars, and pizza. Girls like taking care of their man, taking care of the kids, taking care of dolls, and taking care of their style/beauty. It's the fact that the ads say: This is what boys like, and this is what girls like. Society generalizes us and tells us this is what you're supposed to like, without exception.
You are right, men are born as men and women are born as women. But how should biological-sex dictate what they CAN or CANNOT do? Not based on what their body makes more difficult to do, but rather on what society states they shouldn't even attempt at doing because they won't "fit" within the stereotypical expectations set for them. And also, the definitio of masculinity and femininity isn't even universal! There is no definition, it is something made by a culture.
I suggest you go into the studies of sociologist Margaret Mead who lived in 3 primitive societies and saw that in all 3,did the behaviours and gender roles differentiate. From males and females competing against one another, to females being the dominant aggressors to the males being just as cooperative and timid as the females. Yet, these societies had no contact with the "outside world," so influence from other cultures wasn't there. Read books such as Real Boys, & Gender Shock.
@lovelyladynostalgic I'm not an anthropologist, but I have seen her work and she has studied a very specific culture (Samoan people) to draw very generalist conclusions. Besides, you know that many of the women she interviewed declared that they lied to her when answering personal questions about their sexual life, so, this is a very strong argument against her conclusions: her research was based on false information. And her study served to people promoting sexual liberation in the 60s and 70s.
@lovelyladynostalgic As I see it, there is much involved in the promotion of her work. Some people just get famous not because of a real contribution to mankind, but because their work serve to purposes of other influent people who want to promote ideas and life styles. As for the other idea you mentioned, don´t people see that men have limits because they are men, and women also have limits because they are women? I see in gender ideology a rebellion against our very biological condition.
@tehkorah78 Indeed. I have seen many odd things in life, but I don´t know how can people be that crazy to defende this "gender" ideology. False... too false...
that lady in the first clip is a good woman thats all i want from my lady i just want a housewife she doesnt need to work i look at her as a queen and queens dont work that guy treated her like dirt though pretty messed up
Ahaha, in that first advert "the man of the household" is portrayed as being completely incapable of making a cup of coffee. I love how it's even implied that if his wife doesn't make him a better cup of coffee, he might actually have an affair XD Brilliantly stupid.
It didn't even make any sense. There were several unrelated commercials. And the only gender stereotypes were either from the sixties (and those, yes, had a little stereotyping going on. Though most women were housewives back then, but the problem was, it made the women seem kind of dumb. But the commercials were silly overall); or in the newer commercials, I saw that girls like dolls, pretty things and colours, while boys like cars and sports. But that, in general, is pretty accurate.
Dolls and "pretty things" being only exclusive to girls and sports and cars being generally promoted towards boys is also gender role stereotyping. Children should be able to explore all forms of entertainment and not be bound by something as meaningless as gender.
what you said at the end of your comment was the point the person was trying make. Gender stereotypes change all the time- i think that was one of the points and the reason why the person used video advertisements.
Here's the thing, Marllon, they are not *exclusive* to, but *marketed* to girls and boys (dolls to girls and toy cars to boys). People have their own tastes and personalities, even when they are young. I played with both G.I. Joes and Skipper Dolls growing up. But there is a reason boys may prefer cars and sports and the like. Males are more prone to violence (which plays a role in the sales of toy cars) and they have a natural physical advantage in sports and therefore are more inclined to it.
@HobbitRules Males have more innate courage and are more prone to take risks. At the low end, this is violence and crime. At the high end, it's financial success and invention. The toys are marketed to the sex that has the inclination towards it. It's about sales, not social engineering.
@feministsAreCorrupt Now I'm sure you are very even-minded, especially considering your choice in usernames. But surely you must know that courage is a character trait and something that in no way can be proven to be attributed to a sexual differences, unlike a proclivity to violence.
ok, is it only me who is not getting how the 'retarded chicken' hmv adv is about gender stereotyping.
i guess if u stretch it, it can be quite offensive to chickens....? :S

I hate this GENDER IDEOLOGY. It is as false as NAZISM. The very word GENDER was invented to mask the reality.
And yet there are some crazy people simply trying to destroy masculinity and feminility. Learn that: man and woman are different and complementary.
Man are born man, and woman are born woman. You can lie to people, but you will never change this TRUTH.
