There's a mirror in there for the sentinel to check his uniform, a phone to call down to the guard quarters and a spray bottle to wet their gloves. Also, the sentinel goes in the box when there is a wreath laying ceremony as he cannot walk the mat while someone is on the plaza.
During hurricane Isabel, the sentries guarding The Tomb of the Unknowns remained at their post. At this place, 24 hrs/365 days at year regardless of the weather conditions and ignoring personal well-being, there is a soldier on duty watching over the Tomb.
@americansoldier711 i think the greatest thing is they had the choice to not do it during the storm but they all volunteered and put there lifes on the line for the tomb. im serving right now and when i visited it was a tear jerker. commitment.
The gloves they wear are cotton and very soft when they are dry. It is hard to get a good grip on the rifle and make the crisp movements with it if the gloves are "slippery." They wet them to get a better grip on the weapon. There is not a water bottle in there to drink, they drink fluids before being posted. They cannot tie their own shoes once the belt is put on. It is so tight and if they bend over it will mess up the appearance of their jacket. I hope this helps a little.
There are numerous reasons he could have gone in the box...there is a water bottle in there so he can wet his gloves again, there is a phone in there so he can call the Guard Quarters in case his shoe is coming untied or any number of reasons. There is not a toilet in there...it is not a port-a-jon. The "rug" as you call it, is a mat, and they don't clean it during the day, they replace it twice a year. It is not a bad thing that he went into the box, actually it can be normal sometimes.
ok they dont call for relief guard , its scheduled , and there was no bad weather so it had better be some serious shit or he is gunna be kicked from the unit
@jonjon181 Sometimes they schedule cleaning that rug from all the rust and debris. The guard hops into the box and a while later a crew comes and rolls up the rug for cleaning.
@americansoldier711 The Sentinel guarding the tomb doesn't call for a relief. The relief comes out on the hour every hour, or on the half hour, every half hour. No matter what.
TheSentinel488 thank you for answering that question. Are you or did you serve at the tomb?

@ssobataka Mostly true, however they can drink. They can do anything if it doesn't bring disrespect upon the Army or the unknown soldiers.

@WarThug13 the wet gloves give the sentinel a better grip of the weapon They tie their shoes in the guard quarters.
