Internals are forged from the factory (except pistons). Rods and crank can handle 700whp easily. Pistons are good for 420~whp, wiseco sells sets. SHOSource has a selection for pistons as well.
You should get an 89. They are significantly quicker. Of course not having ABS, Air Bags, a rod shifter, and all that good stuff really helps to bring the weight down.
No. 14's if you have slicks and a good driver. 3.2's only have a different intake cam, 3.0 intake cam swaps don't do much. 5hp gain up top at most.
Your cousins 98 probably has NOS. There are no S/C or Turbo kits for the V8's (also space is scarce under the hood). The aftermarket for the V8's is minimal. NOS is the only good power adder for them since it is universal, but bolt-ons and a tune don't do much.

The SHO was an automatic... that gearing was so tall! The Civic has a nice, close ratio, so you have to factor that in too.
The Civic driver did have hella wheelspin, though, but if was a relaxed launch, that ATX SHO would have been done.
and BTW, the Civic was modded!

Eh no. Any detuning rumors are purely that, rumors. V6 makes 220hp btw.
V8's can't be retuned to get the HP figures you are thinking of.
It also isn't a Yamaha V8, it is a duratec block with Yamaha heads. Nothing special, except it spins cams every 80k unless they are welded.
Also, no forged internals like the V6 SHO's.
