Discuss lessons with other drummers... Yeah That's something worth paying for... ahaha, I am a bit tired of these marketing gymnasts: after transforming drumming into a sport you would do at the gym... they also try to sell you training tips... Now let me get back to that Stev Gadd record. I need some quarter notes..to detoxicate...
I'm here to talk about the existence of a brand new musical experience called Idaea. The influence ranges from Planet X, Meshuggah, Dream Theater, Chick Corea to Contemporany and Experimental music. It would be really cool if you visited our myspace and added coments, thoughts and opinions!:
@ earesistible: when "back to basics" was released, Virgil was already playing the drums for 25+ years, so i don't think it made a huge difference to his playing.. :)
@ earesistible: they sound TOTALLY different.. even if they sounded the same, it would be more likely for Weckl to be the imitation, since Virgil is older and has been playing drums loooooong before Weckl ever picked up a stick :) don't get me wrong, i absolutely friggin' love Weckl, but there is absolutely no connection between their styles..
dave weckl is 2 years younger than virgil donati. you're right, they sound totally different. but neither weckl or donati are imitating each other, that's ridiculous.
I was at a clinic with him once and hes explaining a rediculously complicated excercise and his phone rings and he answers, its his gf, and hes like, im on stage now and we laugh, and he starts banging away and goes, see, ill call you later hahaha
Awesome! Virgil is killing it again... Love to see these guys tour with The Collins/Wardingham Project. Go to "Attack Of The Necromongers - Paul Wardingham". You'll see what i mean
I've spoken to Virgil several times after shows, and heard a lot from other people who hung out with him and we all think he's a very nice guy and as down to earth as it gets.
What we all seem to forget is the fact that regardless of whether or not they are in the public eye they are human first and foremost so God forbid they get "in a mood" for one night as the world seeks to judge and begrudge them for crying out loud.
Just because when we throw our fits or have our moods and everyone's not there to critique us doesn't make us any better than them.
Let them be human and just appreciate their gifts and contributions will ya as we show our imperfection by judging!
That maybe so, but from what I heard when he played in my home town in Australia, one guy I spoke to discribed him as a pig. I guess thats what happens when success gets to you. He was helping him pack up his kit and told him how woderful he thought his playing was, Virgil replied along the lines of "just pack up my kit will you!!"
well then he simply wasn't himself when he replied like that cause i have personally met him and talked with him and he seemed really down-to-earth guy considering what he has accomplished.. maybe he was in a bad mood, or something had gone wrong, or maybe he was a couple of years on the road and at that time he was really tired.. i know there is no excuse for such a behaviour, but maybe we should cut a break to the people that give 5 shows a week for a year or 2, like he does..
I have met Virgil on several occasions over the years and have found him to oscillate between being gracious or almost rude and condescending. There would be few musicians of his caliber who are have good people skills with the exception of guys like Gavin Harrison who seems to devote a lot of (unpaid) time to his fans. See his thread over at drummerworld. Virgil has made a very good business out of his website, videos and live gigs, there is really no excuse for biting the hand that feeds him.
I haven't met any of the big name guys who were rude yet. Bruford was a super nice guy when I met him and asked me about my drumming and interest in music. When I went to San Diego to drum with Marco Minnemann for a couple days he was one of the nicest, down to earth people I've ever met. Especially considering all he has accomplished. It was like hanging out with an old friend from high school or something! I hope one day to catch Virgil in a clinic! It would be incredible!
So Virgil is an asshole? I have always thought that he was a nice person, and when I met him he was nice. He said that he was too bizzy signing autographs, but that doesnt mean that he´s an ass, he was probalbly just tired.
But for sure, he do stike me as an very VERY odd person. I mean, if you have ever seen him among people, and stuff, its like hes uncomfortable and doesnt know how to behave or something....hes a weird person, but I love he´s music and drumming!!
Well there is no greatest drummer ever but Virgil is definitely one of the top drummers of all time.He is one of those players that people will look back on in 100 years for his incredible talent. He is one of those few players thats pushing the limits by playing what was previously thought impossible on the Modern drumset.
Wow we've got a lot of pissed of people here... for nothing ._.
