@FearTygaToe It's a thing swimmers, especially backstrokers train to do. You sort of make an airlock in your nose so there won't be any water flowing in.
@jabba969 IF you look at the overhead angle, :19 you will see that his hand is coming out thumb. It is just that he lets his thumb hang loose instead of holding it in tight line with the rest of his fingers. The last underwater angle also shows this with his thumb floating as he pulls down and hanging down has he pushes up.
I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
wow truly amazing im ranked 20th in canada for 100 meter back stroke. hes like ranked 2 in the world or something imagine how prous he feels. i wanna be like him.
dude this is soooo good, iv always had a hard time with backstroke and its been detrimental to me in my IM, does anyone have any drills i could do to help out my backstroke at all to make it look at least a little more like lochte's....meaning making it look and move decently....i am open to suggestions
@MrBluesquid100 rotating your whole body as one is recommended by my coach, keep your shoulders in line with your hips.
another drill is double arm backstroke, both arms go back at the same time to make sure you're not crossing your left arm over to your right side, and vice versa.
tips: keep your head back and push your hips waaaaaay up. try to get your feet to break the surface a bit with every kick, but still keep your hips close up there too. also, pull in a straight line, no zig zagging. :]
@asfuckasgator I realize I am 5 days after your meet lol.. but the way to flipturn in to practice youer regular freestyle flip turn and get your backstroke count down perfect.. That way you get to the wall perfect each time and your just flip over and do the reg freestyle turn and you're off
ryan is a pretty good backstroker he has a great technique to his backstroke im also a backstroker but the thing thats wrong with my is that i need my head to be more down wich is wierd to me
you don't want it down so much as back, this is a problem I've had, you just want to keep it back with your chin pointed to the ceiling, this also keeps you from misjudging your stroke count into your turns
look at the freestyle world record holders mate and ull see, the onli one is the 200m freestyle whcih phelps has but thorpe had it for the past 4 years b4 that
I am sure the comment "Americans Dominate all" is a broad statement and not just attached to this past Olympics where maybe we lost ONE or TWO races... where as the statement is defined by "WE DOMINATE" the sport overall because if you add up ALL the Golds and ALL the world records, over the last 20 years in swimming, it'll make your head spin...so your comment about who one in Beijing in A race in the 100 breast, A RACE in the 200m? kinda small in the big pic! :) hugs
Actually, you're right : all FS except 200m, but if you watch very well, the 200m FS is USA and ... all backstroke, all buterfly, all Medley and all relays. So, say "USA dominates back like Australian dominates dominates FS" is a bit ridiculous.
MAN! his pulls are soo good. i have a dumb arm thats always a little more out to the side when im reaching. he can get both arms to touch his ears, i can't to that. and his kick is up and down. i also don't do that. however i find the way he and i hold our hands are similar. sum ppl tend to bend ther fingers perpendicular to their palm when out of the water but i don't and he doesn't either. yay! his kick and pull is different than mine but our hands are the same! hahaha
lochte is my hero!! im a highschool swimmer and all i do is backstroke. the medley relay and the 100 back and he is freakin sweet in the backstroke. but one day when i go to the olympics, im gunna beat him and then i can die a happy man
i wasn't serious. im only 19 but in my last swim season at my highschool (i failed a grade) i was swimming 1.03.42. i was all area and won the mega conference
hence the "not serious." backstroke is my favorite however i was only a two year swimmer having started my junior year of highschool. i was much better in the medley relay than the 100back. the 2nd 50 would just destroy my legs because since my pull is nasty bad, i kick like a maniac to move at all. im alot prouder of my 25:12 in my last medley relay than my 1:03 (which i only got because i cheated. hehehehehe)
yea. in backstroke. when you are reaching up with your arm, then pulling down towards your feet, you just grab the underside of the lane marker and pull that. so instead of just stroking with that arm, your actaully using the lane marker to give you an extra fast propulsion forward. its sooo bad but it i won't lie, its given me a win in some pretty close races. (im so horrible) hahaha
I want to thank nkarpov for this video. Nothing helped me to learn backstroke until I watched this one. This video is short but it's the most helpful! Thank you!

well someone i trained with and whom actually befriended me, made coffee for my parents etc in the mornings that you call a 'public figure', didn't have to say anything whatsoever if he didn't think so. and believe you me, he wouldn't've. not to mention tracey wouldn't've either. they had no reason to. or how about you ask her yourself what she thought? didn't think so...

if its 90% you only watch the men swimming cause you are so wrong about that.
