@vaiol123 Best march ever written, BAR NONE! Grafulla was a Spaniard living in New York during the Civil War. If you have the chops to play the Eb cornet part on the march-----------------you are some musician!!
@dcp10200 Have you ever played the Eb cornet part for this march? I have played both and Washington Grays is THE BEST MARCH EVER WRITTEN-------BAR NONE..
@eflatalto4 i played the e flat alto saxophone part both first and second and they are hard but still not a hard as Gibraltar. Again not the best march bar none there are a plethora of British marches that are much more technical and sound way better than this march
@dcp10200 I'm talking about the Eb CORNET part. Grafulla did'nt write parts for the saxaphone. His score was for the 8th N.Y. Regiment (a brass band). Get your hands on an original cornet part, then get an original cornet and then we'll see what you think. BTW, I played an original Eb Alto from my collection, on Washington Grays and though it was nowhere near what the cornets were playing, IT WAS HARD ENOUGH! Gibralter is tough, but it does'nt compare to Washington Grays
@eflatalto4 im sorry but Washington grays i will admit is a very challenging march but it is easy to play it with good tone. Gibraltar is a march that takes skill to master the tone and technicality of the march. Many pros find Gibraltar harder than Washington Grays for that simple fact.
@dcp10200 I will agree that British bands play the marches with a style and technique that is unmatched by American bands. Britain has a system of support for bands, the colliery bands, that we do not have here in the states. That is the reason British bands do a much better job than our bands do. BUT----We are talking about a Eb brass band march that was written in 1862 for an American C.W. band that was written by a Spaniard!! Did you notice that at the royal wedding, Grafulla was preferred?
@eflatalto4 also Kennith J Alford (The British March King) wrote much better marches that have melody substance and challenges for all instruments in the band.
@eflatalto4 I do Respect your opinion but I find American marches very loud and cold dynamic wise British marches have a fat warm dignified sound that takes time to develop proper tone on therefore increasing difficulty.
@dcp10200 We can agree on this point . Again, it is the colliery band tradition that molds British band music and makes them tops in this field. My favorite march by a British composer is "Army of the Nile"
@dcp10200 Check out the Mount Carmel High School Band on U Tube. For a H.S., They have a pretty good music program and they do a nice job on Washington Grays
@eflatalto4 Can you provide any info on Black Dyke Mills? Where are the from? Are they an amateur band? Have you ever performed with them? What are some of the discs they have pressed? Where can I buy them?
It seems to me Black Dyke is just as good, if not better than any British military band including bands stationed with Royal Household bands.
@vaiol123 Sorry Pal, It has NOTHING to do with Britian! The Brits should be so lucky! This is a march written for the 8th N.Y. Regiment during the Civil War, written by a Spaniard for an American Regiment.
It is the finest march ever written BAR NONE. The Brits could'nt touch this one with a 10 foot pole
You can hear this march in the film Chariots of Fire played by the Olympic Band in the Olympic Stadium when the Prince of Wales meets the runners who are about to start the 100 meter race.
The Kingsbridge Armory is still standing in The Bronx at the corner of Kingsbridge and Jerome Avenues. About 15 years ago it was being used by NYC's Human Resources Administration as a homeless shelter.
This is not a British march but a march from the American Civil War. The Washington Grays were a military unit from New York (the North). At the beginning of the War it was not yet established that the North would wear blue uniforms and the South gray. Units wore all different kinds and colors of uniforms. The composer Claudio Grafulla was born in Spain and moved to New York. He was very popular in his day. It is a wonderful piece of music. Makes you feel like marching. Thanks for posting.
Washington Grays is an American March composed by Grafulla in 1861 for the 8th Regiment New York State Militia based in Kingsbridge Armony Bronx. Gray refers to the color of the regimental uniforms. Grafulla born 1810 came to the US in 1838. He was a horn player in a band attached to the 7th Regiment. The march is part of the Port Royal Band Books Grafulla arranged for the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment Band. Grafulla was director of the 7th Regiment Band. See Wikipedia. Its a great march!

Does anybody ever notice how military bands in Britain always play American marches yet military bands in the USA never perform British marches?
Personally, I think American marches are far more spectacular. E.E. Bagley, Sousa, and Henry Fillmore were geniuses.
Fillmore especially wrote some wild and fanastic screamers that are renowned for being performed at a circus.
Go and listen to "Circus Bee" or "Rolling Thunderer" They are killers!

@SnickleFritz79 I beg to differ! My military school band only plays British Marches. I love the Brits but its getting on my nerves.

No way to be certain but I think this is a performance by the Band of the Scots Guards, circa 1958, conducted by Lt Col Samuel Rhodes.
