Same with drums - easier to say 'badadadam' than give detailed technical instructions. And just because they are 'professional musicians', doesn't mean they ought to know any music theory, as long as their style works for them. Johnny Ramone was a professional musician, after all.

Thier record label wanted them to start doing nu metal for radio time, etc, and the band was like "alright, if we Must..." so they made the crappiest sounding music they could so kind of stick it to thier record label for telling them what to do. thier label was like "if you dont change your style, you'll become unpopular". So they made St. Anger to show them that no matter what drivel they play, thier fans will remain loyal. St. Anger's 1 of my favs.

In Kirk's defense... that's a tricky riff! James is rapid firing off seven 16th notes in a row. Being an odd number is what makes it difficult. Think of the machine gun-like riff at the end of their song 'One'. Picking two 16th note triplets and landing on the down beat is cake...standard metal stuff. Imagine throwing in one extra 16th note to that triplet part. That's like Zappa shit.

And there's no way is Lars nailing '7's' on his kick drums. Yet, no one seems to be busting his balls.
