Paul should stick to playing music and leave the singing to someone else. He thinks he can sing high, but his octave range is severely lacking. A very good musician though and he has a very good band
worst. impersonation. ever. : I had never heard Cher's version but listened to it thinking it would be a hoot, and she sounded nothing like that troll made her out to sound. She actually did the song justice in a very Cher way, but how else would she do it? Paul Shaffer is lame, what a douchebag.
Sounds more like Helen Keller. Clever editing by Youtube. Since Cher can't move her face, no one can "move" a video about her. It's called "Botex-editing."
@winterw00d They're bbfs and hes just thinking how badly shell beat him when this gets back to her. Ever since she called him an asshole when they first met.
I remember watching this when I was a kid and It STILL cracks me up. It was always a treat to watch Letterman in Dec and get to catch Paul's 30 sec impression and hear the muff joke. ( I didn't even know what a muff was, and I wondered why everyone would laugh at that) does he still do this?

wtf are you talking about 'what late night show do you play on' you fucking retard? what does that have to do with anything? people like you are idiots because you just assume that famous people are famous because they are 'talented' and deserve to be so. fucking sheep. Paul Shaffer is a fucking dorky tool with mediocre talent and I have the right to say wtf I want to say about him and the fact that he plays on the late show doesnt make me wrong and you right. fucking idiot.
oh my, I cant even believe Im letting you engage me in this stupid back and forth interaction. I do quite well for myself both financially and personally and I am very satisfied with my life and what i have done. If you measure success by being on TV, then you must live a sad, sad, SAD life. People that think like you are either extremely immature or very stupid. I assume that in your case it is both.
Shaffer has been playing music professionally since the 60s and has worked with Sammy Davis Jr, James Brown and Miles Davis (among many others). He got where he is through hard work.
Hey, I think P Diddy and Kanye West are talentless hacks, but they are selling millions of records and going on tour while you and I are sitting at desks posting comments on the internet.
Hey, cdftaurus, you're either too young to get the joke here or too undereducated about Paul Shaffer's career in general. He was the musical director for SNL back in the '70s. His musical production talent made The Blues Brothers a nationwide phenomenon. He's the musical director for the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. And if you can't recognize his instrumental chops on Letterman then you're just clueless, with no frame of reference.
@andyinoregon Letterman humor, often bolstered by Paul, is not everyone's cup of tea, and not everyone gets it. In case anyone doesn't get it, the joke is that Cher was put in a very prim, Victorian, traditional setting and costume, then opens her mouth, and we hear that she sounds like the opposite of a very prim, Victorian, traditional girl. This is typical Letterman, and some folks are Letterman types, some are Leno types, Conan, etc. It's possible to like both Paul and Cher. I do.
@defundthewar It's also possible to not get the joke because it's too highbrow for some of us-- lesser people. I didn't quite get the joke, but I DID get the fact that he was not bashing her singing, since he says, in seriousness (although still as part of the joke) that it was beautiful.
@AtariMaxiTariyama Letterman may be many things, but not so highbrow. You don't last that long being highbrow. The theme of video and audio not matching- the joke here- is the usual Letterman silliness. I like it anyway. Cher's version of O Holy Night is right here on youtube, and as much as I'm a Cher fan, it is ripe for satire. Paul didn't diss Cher's singing in general, but the very un-Victorian sound of Cher, delivered in a Victorian setting and costume. Harmless fun.
I remember that show so vividly myself. I remember by Dad walking through the living room, stopping in his tracks and saying "Oh, Dear God!" as he watched Cher "sing" his favorite Christmas song. Seriously, I do love Cher's voice, but her version of "Oh, Holy Night" was pretty horrible!
he sounded just like her!
