A prophet has no honour in his own home. So says the Bible with good reason. Rawlings was special. a one-off maverick in Africa who meant what he said and did what he meant. Please show me any other African President driving a tractor, shoveling sand, or building rail lines / bridges with his bare hands?
I truly do not understand why many people consider Rawlings a savior. Granted he wasn't the worse dictator that Africa produced, calling him a saint is far-fetched. Take a good look at his past and you'll quickly realize that he's a war-mongerer. Under his leadership, there were mass murderes and pilaging in Ghana. And still no one has been able to bring him to justice. If we are not capable of doing that, lets not hail him as a holy saint!
This man brought a lot of hope to Ghana. He came to power via a coup so what? If someone removes Mugabe from power throuigh a camp, won't you guys be happy. When Rawlings took over, Ghana's economy was in serious decline, recording negative growth rate for over 10 years.
Ghanaians were running to Nigeria to seek greener pastures. Power lied in the hands of only the central Government, inflation was around 126%. There was famine in Ghana. Before he left, EVERY SECTOR had improved massively
The only people who hate Rawlings are those (they and their family) who he seized the stolen wealth of the country from. Those who came to power & within 2 years owned 12 to 20. Those who were not able to account for wealth they had amassed in those short periods of being in power.
And of course those who thought deserved to be President but couldnt be because of Rawlings. He saved us.Lives improved.Food supply increased greatly. Ghanaians no longer had to go to Nigeria to seek greener pastures.
Additionally, Kuffour, NPP and the western powers orchestrated the best propaganda which, at the time, the NDC was not as savvy enough to rebut or challenge. It could be remembered that JJ was [widely perceived as one of the only few African leaders who left his country in a better shape than he found it]. that is not a sign of failure. And NPP ultimate message back then was: He has done well for Ghana except for his human right records. That he should step aside and allow some else to try...
I don't think he failed. It was mere perception as was carefully orchestrated by his adversaries/political enemies. There was also economic sabotage orchestrated with the help of british as admitted by Craig Murray (British dep. Ambssdr) when he stated that the cedi devalued by half and GoG could not explain. The price of cocoa and gold dropped to an all-time low, while price of petroleum went high, enough to cripple Ghana's frail economy. Also, JJ stayed too long=change.

I have a question. With such a beginning in his leadership, what made Rawlings failed at the middle and end of his leadership?
