I agree about Vertigo / The Graduate conversation. I enjoyed The Graduate, but I absolutely love Hitchcock, and until about a couple of years ago when I saw Rebecca, Vertigo was my favorite Hitchcock film. Hitchcock is one of my favorite directors of all time.
I am not as schooled on films and directors as you guys, but while I can name the director of Vertigo, I couldn't name the director of The Graduate off the top of my head.
More strange comments about the Long Good Friday very fine ending if you really believe that one gangster is going to take on the entire IRA come on, he is presented as a very reasonable gangster not nutty as Hitler, in fact Hitler might have balked at the IRA. Otherwise LGF is a very fine piece of work and a great ending...but if any of you with a handful of men would take on the IRA you would need a nuclear device and decent delivery system
To Kill A Mockingbird is GREAT imo, but I agree on Gentleman's Agreement - it's just too didactic. It doesn't present a story anyone can care about beyond the issue. A good 'message' film is one where the message is incidental to the characters rather than the reason for their existence. To Kill A Mockingbird is a good example, where Atticus Finch and the adventures of Scout are more compelling than the debate itself, which we can all pretty much agree on and could even when it was released.
I think the real essence of most of your disagreements come from whether a film is great because it's enjoyable to watch or because it is technically admirable. I'm with Jeff on Easy Rider, and a lot of people don't like Citizen Kane (though I love it). The idea of what a film represents historically or how proficiently it was made isn't really the same thing as whether it entertains a given viewer.
As usual, it was a highly entertaining show. Keep it up guys. You defintitely have earned a certain fan base by now. I look forward to future episodes.
It baffles me that a major network hasn't picked this show up yet! Great host, great panel, great topics of conversation, and of course amazing insight into the films being discussed.
Not only do I find the show extremely entertaining, but i've also gained a wealth of knowledge both of films and how to properly discuss them when need be just from watching/listening. Thanks alot guys, and keep up the great work. The show rules!
Great episode you guys, I love debates like this. This easily could have been a 2 parter.
Loved the comparison of Vertigo to The Graduate. I agree with Jeff about Easy Rider on several points. I love Citizen Kane and Casablanca myself.
Glad you got to touch on the Marx Brothers a bit, freaking love em. Duck Soup and Night at the Opera are classics. After Opera and Day at the Races their MGM films start to go downhill.
I can't wait for your Hitchcock episode, I love Hitchcock movies.
I think they where already going downhill with Day at the Races. It has some of their best stuff, and it's better than what came later. But it's still a big come down from Night at the Opera
What about the Spanish movie "What have I done to deserve this". Load of shit. As for the Marx brothers. The early ones are classics. The later MGM films suck.
I'm with Jeff on this one, behind him on every point about Easy Rider, mad respect for such a great topic too. I would definitely say Godfather would be my pick for movies that are considered classics but I thought sucked, but I think The Beatles suck too. Anyway, great show and doing a one in Eric's house was awesome.
Wheres Danny Peary?

Ok. Well. I finally saw "The Long Good Friday". 10 bloody years, I'd been looking for it and bang, there it is on Youtube.
It was AMAZING. The ending will haunt me til the day I die, it was so great.
But when all's said and done, it wasn't "noir" at all.
It was just damn good. I was convinced Hoskins woulda made a better Capone than DeNiro BEFORE I saw him in this, but now?
A friggin TRAGEDY he wasn't cast in the "Untouchables."
Peace

How about a show about Mark Kermode film critic, is he right or wrong?

How 'bout: Best noir films?
Double Indemnity
The Big Sleep
Chinatown
Blood Simple and Miller's Crossing
What's the Hoskins movie "The long Friday"? Never seen it; been going out've my mind lookin for it.
L.A. Confidential. (worked for me, best of the Ellroy adaptations, considering he writes like a broken staccato machine...if those exist)
Usual Suspects, etc, etc
Sure there are a host y'all can come up with as well.
Peace

We actually talk about Long Good Friday on our UK Gangster Flick ep. Check it out.

Checked it. You barely mentioned it. And the key word was "noir", which didn't come up at all.
Still, a heck of show. Well done.
Why is this film so hard to track down? Or might it be just me?

Easy Rider is great, but it's so thesis driven, and that's my only problem with it.

Great idea littleshoeshopper "Guilty Pleasures" would make a great topic along same lines "Movies I should not like but do".
