Just some tape - might not make a difference if you practise an hour here and there, but if you practice steadily, couple hours every day or every other day your thumb gets pretty much beaten up, which is why you might wanna protect it, especially after years and years of playing.

I have been playing awhile. However I've never realy dug much into slap. And is the wrap on the thumb serve as like a cushion to get a softer sound? I usually just play with my index and middle finger, but when I use a pick (Which isn't very often) I put duct tape on it because I dont like the metallic sound. I was just wandering if it serves the same purpose with slap.

I personally sometimes do it because its not as hard on my thumb. i dont think it really affects the sound. ill check and try to get back to ya about it if i can remember.

it's a thumb pick i think... they're more for use with banjoes... you put finger picks on some fingers as well so you can do kinda circular picking....

Thanks for the info. That bass is absolutely beautiful! I just got a new Sadowsky NYC ultravintage jazz bass in olympic white with a Brazilian rosewood board. It's amazing but I'd love to get a vintage 60s or early 70s jazz bass someday. The prices on the vintage Fenders are just crazy these days!
