I love this version of In a Mellow Tone! And Greg's playing is beautiful...being a horn player myself I'm just blown back by this guys ability to drive the band with his ride and snare, yet all the hits with the horns are so nice and at the back of the beat!

I am saying that Greg wasnt good with buddy rich band. He wasnt called for nothing if he isnt good. Check my first comment. Remember..you kids always have this notion that if the drummer is great that what he does justifies his name. It simply doesnt work that way. Ask any great drummer, he will tell you that " Ahh.. that wasnt good today " Also discard the idea of who is playing and close your eyes and listen to whats being played. You watch his face you might get to like his smile instead.

Would you also say that about Gadd's performance with the Buddy Rich big band? No-one could play like buddy, and Gadd can't play like any of the other guys on this, so he does the right thing - he lays down his own shit and puts in a great performance. You should absolutley play it safe, always, becuase otherwise you'll fuck up and then you look like a twat.

I first met Greg when I was studying drums and music at North Texas State University in the early 80s. It was him and guys like him there that made me realize I had no future in jazz! I especially like the beginning and the part at about 6:00 when the band comes back in. The way he hits the accents of the horns and how he plays little fills setting up the accent. And the 3 accent hits on the snare at 2:40. And the accents the last note of the melody line on the sax soli at 3:41. Masterful.

I suggest you watch more buddy rich videos to know what accents mean and how its done every other bar..Gregg is a greenhorn in jazz attacks and syncopation and from this video i can tell that he is scared shit about the playing with the band

It sounds like you don't think he is worthy/capable of playing w/the band or this style of music.......Here's my suggestion; Go listen to Live From Sanfransisco by Maynard Ferguson w/Gregg on drums at 23 and tell me he didn't know what he was doing. Its all about this particular video. Gregg was shitty here. Thats my point. If it was any other drummer, I would not have bothered to comment, but it was Gregg who is a good drummer. we all know this. Billy ray cyrus is my son's fav video..By the way I dont think Billy gets nervous, even though he is all alone facing a crowd...he knows thats he is out there to have a good time. Have you ever thought how Mariah Carey would feel on a live concert? Thats the difference.. the musicality.

I was at this show 20 years ago. And I have the others on video. And those guys drove the band.....just like Gregg did in the second tune he played. This is a laid back swing tune. You don't drive this type of song .Even I know that. So compare apples w/apples....not oranges.He LED the band w/the right feel w/out overdoing it.

I have seen a lot of Buddy. Gregg did tour w/Maynard Ferguson.....same style Big Band. And Maynard also had Peter Erskine. Do you think a guy like Maynard w/his years and years of experience w/Peter, would allow Gregg to tour w/him if he wasn't capable????.........Don't bable....it's a yes or no question. If uve seen a lot of Buddy and think that Maynard and buddy have same style, no point in arguing. Lastly ,do you know what kind of chords they use in Buddy's Music or what kind of scales does a soloist such as Marcus uses in Buddy's music? I think your music knowlegde is limited to drumming. Yes,Maynard would allow Gregg but Buddy would have kicked his ass. Great drummers play with even pop artist. All in the days work. Chambers/santana, Omar Hakim/Sting and so on. Can Santana play with Buddy?

I don't know the chords used, nor do I care. Buddy and Maynard were both intense. I have seen Gregg be intense and lay in to his drumming. Should he have played all over on top of the band? I will be honest, I don't think i have seen Buddy do this song.......but just the vibe of the tune, to throw much more in there would seem overkill....BUT.....that was Buddy's style.

Gregg played both song's w/a different intensity cause thats what they called for.Thats my story & I'm sticking to it.
