Even them old Pearls sound nice. He is endorsing the Mapex drums, which are fantastic drums. I use the Saturn Studioease 6-Piece kit and couldn't be happier with their sound. Gregg could sell a set of boxes if he jammed on those!
I love this version of In a Mellow Tone! And Greg's playing is beautiful...being a horn player myself I'm just blown back by this guys ability to drive the band with his ride and snare, yet all the hits with the horns are so nice and at the back of the beat!
greg's such a pro man. he's so versatile. Great musician. It's a pity he doesn't still have that mullet haha. it also always sounds like he has something in his throat. anyone notice that?
no matter, he sounds fluid and solid on the drums when he plays so it doesn't matter how his voice sounds haha.
I am saying that Greg wasnt good with buddy rich band. He wasnt called for nothing if he isnt good. Check my first comment. Remember..you kids always have this notion that if the drummer is great that what he does justifies his name. It simply doesnt work that way. Ask any great drummer, he will tell you that " Ahh.. that wasnt good today " Also discard the idea of who is playing and close your eyes and listen to whats being played. You watch his face you might get to like his smile instead.
If i put a my video it wont change my comment or what Gregg has done. If my video makes you change your opinion of Gregg..then pls stop commenting about drumming coz you are not up to it yet. good luck in future
If he couldn't play he wouldn't have been invited. He had experience in the past w/Maynard and Brandon amongst others.
I get a kick out of guys that cry about being better then someone else and never getting a chance...thats life..............but you cant carry a career like Gregg has for 20+ years if you A: Can't play w/the skills to save that career and B: If you have YOUR attitude....I can play that better................we will never know that.......so stop the crying already.
I suggest you try hard to understand what my comment really is. Greg would have been better off if he had made a speech instead. When you sit with Buddy Rich Band, you better play the snare's shit out. There's no point playing it safe. Everyone and anyone can do that.
I think your point was that Gregg isnt that good, didn't play it that well and that we should all know that you could have played it better.........am I on the right track?.........this a swing style tune thats pretty laid back.....why overplay for the sake of impressing you???????? Everyone here is ALL TALK....you put up a video of you playing this song, show us how the song should REALLY be played.....If anyone and everyone can do it why wasn't it you?? Oh, I know, cause your a jeleous nobody!
Would you also say that about Gadd's performance with the Buddy Rich big band? No-one could play like buddy, and Gadd can't play like any of the other guys on this, so he does the right thing - he lays down his own shit and puts in a great performance. You should absolutley play it safe, always, becuase otherwise you'll fuck up and then you look like a twat.
Jazz is about improvisation..being in that moment..you always try to do "more" but enough..Playing safe is for guys who are fucking scared of getting fucked...Ill tell you a secret..You play safe ..you dont make the cut to be in the league.
You are simply wrong. Playing safe is for guys who get paid. And you'll be surprised just how safe these guys are actually playing. They got their shit down and they don't do more than they can comfortably even though it might sound like that to an uneducated chump like you. I don't know what league it is you're talking about but I'm glad you're in it, because you probably sound terrible when you play.
Gregg did not get paid on that occasion, moron. Looks like you dont know a lot of things. This i can easily tell since you dont even know what league im talking about. Not to worry. I wasnt talking about any soccer league..lol . And what has my sounding terrible got to do with Gregg's playing? hahahah. How old are you anyway..10?
I first met Greg when I was studying drums and music at North Texas State University in the early 80s. It was him and guys like him there that made me realize I had no future in jazz! I especially like the beginning and the part at about 6:00 when the band comes back in. The way he hits the accents of the horns and how he plays little fills setting up the accent. And the 3 accent hits on the snare at 2:40. And the accents the last note of the melody line on the sax soli at 3:41. Masterful.
I suggest you watch more buddy rich videos to know what accents mean and how its done every other bar..Gregg is a greenhorn in jazz attacks and syncopation and from this video i can tell that he is scared shit about the playing with the band
And I think anyone playing w/this calibur of musicians would be somewhat nervous. It sounds like you don't think he is worthy/capable of playing w/the band or this style of music.......Here's my suggestion; Go listen to Live From Sanfransisco by Maynard Ferguson w/Gregg on drums at 23 and tell me he didn't know what he was doing. That would have made Maynard a fool dont you think.......your crituqing a great drummer as bad.....but have Billy Ray Cyrus as a favorite video??? Funny man..if u r 1.
Its all about this particular video. Gregg was shitty here. Thats my point. If it was any other drummer, I would not have bothered to comment, but it was Gregg who is a good drummer. we all know this. Billy ray cyrus is my son's fav video..By the way I dont think Billy gets nervous, even though he is all alone facing a crowd...he knows thats he is out there to have a good time. Have you ever thought how Mariah Carey would feel on a live concert? Thats the difference.. the musicality.
Greeg was nervous and wasnt there to have a good time so that makes him not musical??? But Bill had fun and wasnt nervous, so that makes him musical? WHAT?? To me there is a difference between not liking someone and saying that they arent good or "shitty". Matt Sorum did the Buddy Video also and he played straight out rock w/some backbeats. I thought his drumming was solid........but it was so not Buddy Rich swing/jazz............but he wasnt shitty..he just didnt care about the style of music.
Its better we stop speaking on behalf of Gregg. We neither know if he was nervous nor did he care about the style of music which any musician should be. Buddy's music is as raw as reggae is to Bob Marley. Please watch Weckl and Marvin smitty smith with Buddy's band. Please do. I came looking for drummers who played with Buddys band and I believe you came to look for Gregg. I repeat; Gregg is a good drummer. its just this video i am talking about.
You spoke on his behalf, I didn't. I repeated you as a ? He didn't play for the style?? Was it funk or rock?? Seems to have a definate swing feel to it. Gregg is no slouch in this style of playing. He played in the style at hand. I still think you saying Billy Ray Cyrus (a mooch off his daughters sucess, a nobody anymore w/out his daughter) is musical and Gregg, a top studio musician, that makes a living on his own is not musical. Those were your words not mine...Comical...lay of the drinking.
Come on now..you used the words nervous and that he didnt care about the music, Lay of drinking? how old are you? 10? we all drink dont we? You sneaked into my account before saying something about the video? Now we have to deal with the Cyrus family. hahahah. listen..better dont bring in the Marley family too..hahah..And dont drag our lives into this too..ufff.. its not worth it bro..Buddy's band is about a spearheading drummer. Watch Weckl, bellson, smitty smith with the band.
I said nervous and not being musical w/a question mark??? Re-read your comments. How many times you gonna use the "How old are you ,10?".....thats original. I saw all you mentioned and of course they are very good. Gregg was swinging it just fine. And w/Cyrus, it's very funny to hear ANYBODY say Billy Ray Cyrus is musical and Gregg is not....do some research and check out the variety of people Gregg has played with. Not musical??? Good one. And drinking first thing in the a.m.?? Obviously u do.
Ok..ill change the words. How young are you? 120 months? I asked you to check out the videos of other drummers with Buddy's band to see the driving force behind the band. You had to see these videos to know they are good drummers?? Havent you heard of them? why did you check them out anyway? Got you there did I? I know Gregg is good, seen him a lot bro. UFF..its his performance here that sucks. Beats me how you assume I drink in the morning. Oh i get it, you mean coffee rite? Yes yes i do.
I was at this show 20 years ago. And I have the others on video. And those guys drove the band.....just like Gregg did in the second tune he played. This is a laid back swing tune. You don't drive this type of song .Even I know that. So compare apples w/apples....not oranges. He LED the band w/the right feel w/out overdoing it.
Your posts were in the morning, so I assumed anyone that sings the praises of Bill Ray and disses Gregg (even if for just this vid) had to drink. Right? Spelled correctly.
Sorry i said rite instead of right. Since you have made it to top 10 in a spelling contest I would like to help by pointing out that "calibur" is SPELT Caliber ( not SPELLED ( bad grammar too) haha
Hey,if you think Gregg led the band in what you called a laid back tune, you better start watching buddy with his band. You think Gregg can tour with group?. Do you know Buddy's music? If Gregg was to lead the band, the band members will split the scene. Grow up!
I have seen a lot of Buddy. Gregg did tour w/Maynard Ferguson.....same style Big Band. And Maynard also had Peter Erskine. Do you think a guy like Maynard w/his years and years of experience w/Peter, would allow Gregg to tour w/him if he wasn't capable????.........Don't bable....it's a yes or no question. Have you seen Gregg in a live setting other than this??? He drives the band when it calls for it. Or check out Brandon Fields The other side of the story. More Gregg work you can learn from!!
If uve seen a lot of Buddy and think that Maynard and buddy have same style, no point in arguing. Lastly ,do you know what kind of chords they use in Buddy's Music or what kind of scales does a soloist such as Marcus uses in Buddy's music? I think your music knowlegde is limited to drumming. Yes,Maynard would allow Gregg but Buddy would have kicked his ass. Great drummers play with even pop artist. All in the days work. Chambers/santana, Omar Hakim/Sting and so on. Can Santana play with Buddy?
I don't know the chords used, nor do I care. Buddy and Maynard were both intense. I have seen Gregg be intense and lay in to his drumming. Should he have played all over on top of the band? I will be honest, I don't think i have seen Buddy do this song.......but just the vibe of the tune, to throw much more in there would seem overkill....BUT.....that was Buddy's style.
Gregg played both song's w/a different intensity cause thats what they called for.Thats my story & I'm sticking to it.
What fucking title are you talking about?..Its just a fact that calibre is spelt Caliber in America. Home to English it is, but we mother fucking Americans have our own spelling for some words...evolution i guess

On top of that, he had his classical schooling all the way. Stimulated by his also musical parents.
