  • because Experiments and style syntesis ( between rock, blues, jazz) was never so interesting as in Duane Allman case. As always, sometimes he just plays for me quite far from blues :-) my opinion about Rory, Clap, Allman

  • I love Clapton on John Mayall and Bluesbreakers, and especially Derek and the Dominos ( check that album, its wonderful ) but rest.... He just evolved into mainstreem rock filled with blues.. don´t get me wrong, Bad love or Forever man are really good songs but its not pure blues ( or bluesrock)... Rory is awesome in Taste, as in Clapton case, he is great, but sometimes its just too much rock and too little roll ( Bullfrog blues fits in my taste). And DA.. perhaps he was just smoking too much

  • Doesn't get any better! Rory was such a talented guy, and to think he was only 22 years old at this time. He will be forever missed!

  • Proud to be Irish...

  • saw Taste at Guildford civic...and my bro was lucky enough to be in the crowd here at the

I O W...lucky sod !...He sure was a good guitarist...another gone too soon

  • rory was the reincarnation of robert johnson i mean ive never heard anyone play the blues aswell as he did clapton wants to but doesnt have it srv was great but still not as good as rory and page was more rock than blues to cut a long story short gallagher is god

  • Un fenómeno donde los haya.el guitarrista de blues mas completo jamás visto en uk

  • Rory has the blues in his sole ,his playing and in his voice ,i think he realy feels it ,thats why along with son house he,s my fave blues guitarist ,

  • Criminally ignored on all the "greatest guitarists" lists, maybe because he just wasn't flashy enough....

Clapton was good, but I don't think he's very original - he owes a lot of his fame from the '70s on to JJ Cale

  • @Telstar62a rory never needed those paltry lists.honest to god he is on some higher planet than the rest although they are very good no doubt and i like hendrix, page etc but there is something about rory's playing that sets him apart.

  • omg he looks like jesus O.O

  • i heard clapton once said he thought rory gallagher was just a pop musician. It's clear from this that claptout's understanding of the delta blues pales in comparison to rory's mastery.

  • @iamnotanumberiamaman Eric Clapton literaly said "[Rory Gallagher was] the man who got me back in the blues".

  • rory is fckin´ john cusack with long hair

  • Sounds like this boy was a John Lee Hooker fan.

  • Who T F dislikes this???

  • 14 dislikes????!!!!! Well, it sure sounds a bit different than polka, that they are used to.

As aljosha said: "addicted to" button is definitely needed.

  • Jimi Hendrix was cited in a 1969 interview shortly after Woodstock: Interviewer: "So Jimi, what's it like to be the best guitarist in the world?" Jimi: "I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher".

    WOW!!!

  • @matteighm Hendrix also gave props to Billy Gibbons as one of his favorites.

  • @matteighm Love it!

  • @matteighm yeah id love to believe but i dont even think hendrix acknowledged his existence but id love if you could prove me wrong

  • @matteighm Is that true? I really wish it is

  • @matteighm and i didnt think the yanks got IRONY

  • GIBSON rulez...

  • @TheLovie999 its a fender tele retard lol

  • @curbstompinfool Why the insult, tosser? I said ''Gibson rules'' as I have been playing Gibson guitars for ages.. unlike you.

  • ah rory sounds nicer on tele than strat ... and better as part of Taste then on his own, tho of course there's a lot of overlap. just my opinion.

  • this made me want a telecaster

  • @My123456789101 I just bought a standard Telecaster the other day (MIM), and I'd be lying if I said that this video wasn't 99% of the reason that I got it. It sounds amazing and it's one of the most "playable" guitar I've ever picked up. Great for slide too, as I'm sure Rory would have told you.

  • saw him live here in new zealand in 1980, Brilliant, but Taste was his best ever work

  • He is awesome, he reminds me of Paul Butterfield a bit. Super post. Laura

  • This shit makes you CRY!

  • The ultimate best. I HONESTLY can't get any kicks out of Clapton (post-Yardbirds era) or Hendrix nowadays - for me there's no going back.

  • @rrrasmus Yeah i heard that!...Interestingly- I read in an interview- when asked what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist in the world Hendrix replied........"i don't know,Ask Rory Gallagher."

  • @LutherRayable He also said that about Jimmy Page and someone else...he had a lot of favorites.

  • @LutherRayable Do you have that interview? I can't find it anywhere.

  • @rrrasmus no going back indeed. the greatest

  • @rrrasmus im the same with S R V outstanding player ,but i just don't feel it ,im just a rory pureist,to me he is a true all rounder in styles ,blues ,rock ,accostic ,slide, folk, rag ,mandaline, also a fatastic saxaphone player, many styles and insterments means for me he, is and always will be the top guy of his era .:) in guitar tearms may be johnny winter could come close but rorys always at the top

  • @rrrasmus DONT BE A FEKIN EEJOT

  • he's attractive...where is the ''love'' button?great musician!!

  • He looks a bit like Jimmy Page. also love his voice at 1.34

  • he woke me up on numerous occasions?? thx dad:)

  • damn, this man has got the blues! and it's of 1970!! he's really great, this song broke a little piece of my soul and put it into that white telecaster...

  • 16 years ago he died...:( R.I.P. Rory !

  • Rory Is God to!

  • Fierce blues and meanest soundin gawdamn slide!

  • This man is so damn gorgeous I am just about faint ( after something else happens)

  • God, he's gorgreous.

  • this guy is not a genius

no one word can comprehend him

  • I came.

  • Where is his battered old stratocaster? I saw it (I think) a couple of years ago in this shop window in Crouch end North London ☺ HOLY RELIC OR WHAT!

  • @MarkB1ngham rory`s brother has it-i doubt it was rory`s guitar you saw in a shop window-waaay to valuable..

  • @restlesswave That's correct, Donal Gallagher has Rory's guitar.

  • @MarkB1ngham I heard that the band had all of their gear stolen before this Isle of Wight performance, so they had to borrow another bands instruments.

  • @MarkB1ngham Didn't Fender made a Rory Gallagher Strat? That's probably what you saw.

  • @slpplexi1969 Did Fender give it the battered paint peel finish 'n all?☺

  • @MarkB1ngham Yep. For the low price of $3,850! Don't you love Fender?

  • Was having a conversation with my principle, turns out he's related to Gallagher

  • a girlie twerp -self absorbtion.. That would sum up the many years of Rory entertaining thousands and thousands of people. They would chant his name 10 minutes before he came on and stomp until he did 3 encores... I bet you could fuck up a wet dream and wouldn't know which hand to use.

  • Wow

this is great, I still have Vinyl Record that came out ...........

  • Good ole Rory Gallagher. I saw him with Taste at a festival in Germany in 1969, then at the Marquee Club in 1970 and a few months later at the Isle of Wight Festival (this very gig)!. What talent and what a great loss!!

  • what a girlie little twerp, getting all lost in his self absortion.

  • I wish they would bring back the good old days when these self mastubatory adolescents would od on drugs.

  • the master at work

  • rory the best

  • the blues died with rory.

  • @6sixpounder6 the blues will never die.

  • One of the all time greats, and barely ever mentioned anymore when Guitar Godz are invoked.Pity.

  • @ManyGodz i agree with u friend. A genuine Legend. I saw him once. I was 15 years old, sneeked outv my home, me nd my best friend went to see this guy, who went around, like us, in demin jeans nd jacket, nd mad shirt. I nearly cried just standing there, listening and watching this genius. the hairs on my neck were standing on end. After the gig he came ovr, sat on the edge of the stage nd asked us how we liked the show. we were nobodys, he was a legend, u wouldnt know it listening to us chat.

  • BLUES WITH A FEELING..... PRICELESS....

  • areet,,a suppose,,mmm

  • and later that night jimi hendrix appraotch *punches* rorys Shoulder* ~~hey man you sounds gosh lets smoke pot

  • what a player he was. ATG

  • Speechless!

  • happy birthday beloved rory!!!

a pitty that god is dead

  • Oh Boy!!... ¡¡Qué MONSTRUO!! A True Guitar Monster!! Thanks Rory. I Love You!!

  • I love ye rory, youre the one who brought me to that kickin' blues rock, and i dont know how lonely my mp3-player would be without ye LPs.

  • @kipkaixo Yr more thn welcome squire. If you have a min, take a peek at tatooed lady from montreux in 1977. Nice version until about 03:43 where it starts to take off and from there on is an absolute barnstormer. Jazzing, one minute then ripping it up the next. He was usually too shy for the high jinks of rock n roll but in this performance shows he could do the tinsel as well as the next, if that was all that matters. Saw him 3 times, including his last gig: RIP.

  • Why is this not in the album? Shame...

  • Any Gallagher fans out there who wanna real treat, put 'shin kicker montreux 1979' into the search window n click on the first vid that comes up. It'll tear your face off. The opening chords sound like the sex pistols on acid - I thought he was playing a chainsaw for a min. After that he takes off like he's on a rocket. A truly astonishing performance.

  • @dermotwalker will do that.thanks

  • @dermotwalker ta for the 79 montreux link, wow,.... barnstorming from start to finish, he was at one with that guitar, was it mckenna on drums, bass player gerry mc avoy, like you said..... was completly a truly astonishing performance .. saw rory four times live, he is sadly missed.. thanks again, kipper

  • It is a wonderful thing there's no checker flag in the Blues. Just play. When you play well enough to SPEAK -you playin'

  • All hail the G man. Himself and Gerry McEvoy made the blues their own.

Come to the Rory Gallagher Tribute festival in Ballyshannon, Ireland.

  • tele........

  • Looks amazingly like Jimmy Page and plays like him to,,WoW !

  • That music was cooler than any other sophisticated musics !

  • definitely didn't buy a telecaster solely based on this...

  • @mollers92 definitely not looking around the internet to find a telecaster that looks like this to buy =]

  • @jebas1322 thing is aswell. i went to the guitar shop to have a look at some hollowbodies. came away with a danelectro, yeah definitely not wanted one since i heard he had one... haha. the impact this man has had on my guitar playing keeps creeping up on me.

  • definitely need an "addicted to" button beside the like-button

    thanks rory!

  • Ahhhhhh the Isle Of Wight a great weekend smokin it up with 600,000 of my closest friends. Those days and the great musicians like Rory are sadly gone.

  • @Iwannaretire Stoppit ya bastard !!

  • @domnal heh heh heh

  • @Iwannaretire In 1971 Ihad a great argument with someone who had been to that festival and thought that Charlie Mc Kracken was Rory Gallagher !! " Well he was playing a white guitar" (Charlie had a white Bass on the Album Cover). - Great fan he was !!

I did explain . P.S have you retired yet ?

  • @domnal nah not retired yet to many large bills to pay lol

  • Absolutely a Tele...

  • Does anyone know what kind of guitar Rory is playing here? Kind of looks like a telecaster, but I know it's not.

  • @Gallagherfreak100 , looks firmly like a Tele to me. What leads you to think it's not?

  • @notaphaser Probably his eysight !!

  • @Gallagherfreak100

    I think it's a tele too

  • @Gallagherfreak100 it's a tele

  • Rory is, without a doubt, one of the greatest musicians ever

Not only that, but he is one heck of a entertainer as well. He knew how to work a crowd.

  • youtube should really make the like and dislike button more clearly

14 people pressed dislike.... obviously by mistake :)

  • still the greatest!! miss him so much

  • A great Lil' Son Jackson's song played by Rory....

    Simply Amazing!!

  • Holy shit, it's Jack White thirty years before Jack White!!!

  • @mussman717word except rory had more talent in his pinky than jack withe ever had or will have. but that's okay, since jack is one of the last great musicians, and a glimpse of hope for music

  • @Logankeller352

    Very true, actually.

  • Joe Bonamassa is mint, but this guy is just too good.

  • @anonymouslolxD - huh?

  • @MDS1958 Wha?

  • I voted and support Rory into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. He deserves reconition!!!

Anyone who can play a mandolin like a lead w/ NO POWER, (Santa Monica Civic lost power.), & still capture the audience in the BACK ROWS! WOW!

  • @RadioCannedMusic

who gives a fuck about the rock n roll hall of fame..... its a joke at this point.... some of the musicians in the hall of fame as it is, is embarassing, rory is too good for the hall of fame

  • Somebody's fouckin in my room

  • Charlie Vanderkooii one of my old buddy told me of "Taste " i knew a lil Rory but he sounds like Willie Dixon and He rips like Johnny Winter! Great Stuff!!

  • The Jimmy Hendrix saying about Rory Gallagher!!!

Yeah but the fact that the myth or the fact exist is that as a matter of fact there is something of a factual truth in there!

And all connoisYseurs of real music know what it means!

Others will never know! Keep the legend to a true legend!

  • Yeah but the fact that the myth or the fact exist is that as a matter of fact there is something of a factual truth in there!

And all connoisseurs of real music know what it means!

Others will never know! Keep the legend to a true legend!

  • I want that shirt.

  • @balerinauzicka every year on sale at walmart

  • i just love the fact that rory's amp is so damn loud that everytime he takes his hand off the strings it feedsback like crazy mmmm yes

  • I love Rory

  • Que du bonheur !!! love love love !! Rory ...

  • to quote the move The Commitments: " The Irish are the N***ers of europe.". thats why Rory can play so damn good.

  • When Jimi was asked on the Dick Cavett show that he was considered the greatest, he was embarassed and said "how about the greatest in this chair".

The Rory, Keaggy quote was a myth.

  • It's not Travis pickin'...and besides that, they're ugly, too.

  • just enjoy......

  • R.G. *****

  • what tuning open g or open d?

  • @jebas1322 probably none of both. it's tuned in A (with capo H/B).

  • @FelixG9 cheers =]

  • the greatest artist on six strings

  • Great great Rory!!!

  • I need to learn to play this .

  • just goes to show that you dont have to be black to play the blues, he had some serious soul going on

  • "Might die from whiskey, gambling sure won't be my doom". How horribly prophetic,.

  • @eamonn1983 Dear oh yes indeed !! It is a great pity that his "example" is not used to warn young drinkers today . I have read three books about Rory and you have to read between the lines as they all skate around the issue. He did die from an infection after a liver transplant - but he would not have been in that position had he been a sensible drinker. The other emphasis on the prescriptive

drugs he was taking does not answer the question -"if he didn't drink as well"

  • love that tele.

  • @rocknrolla81 theres a big story about repaints and modifications and that tele, but nothing can beat the story of his strat.

  • @Andrewmcg1234 The way he played it beats that story !!

  • absolutely awesome total legend sadly missed r.i.p rory

  • What kills me is, if you look around 2:02 you can see what he's using for a slide. It looks like a piece of 3/4" copper pipe. Rory never relied on fancy gadgets, foot petals or effects. Just him and his guitar. I defy anyone these days to perform that bare, and be THAT good. I will be the first in line to buy your CD.

  • He's using a tarnished brass slide, and most likely he is using one of his vintage Vox AC-30's and a Treble Booster from that era (that's where Brian May got the idea to use the amp and treble booster with Queen)

  • mmmh...yep// I totally agree with you...had one TASTE album I'd inherited from my uncle...I remember being strangely taken by it...+ public enemy n#1 and all other Rory stuff...the best white guy doing BLUES

  • @pindowskivich He used a Vox AC30 with a Rangemaster Treble Booster on this .In later years he used a Hawk Booster ( Calling Card - Secret Agent ) and an Ibanez TS808 but not much else !! Always a valve amp of some kind . The early Thin Lizzy sound was a Rangemaster into a Marshall by the way !! If you watch some more videos you will see that Rory utilised the controls on the guitar a lot.

For his type of tone the basics were to turn the amp up and the guitar down.

  • @pindowskivich if u ask me its a brass slide as can be bought

I got a slightly shorter one myself, but one could use a piece of pipe as well

but no matter what the story behind that slide is, its a awesome song + perfomance

  • @aljosha12 Do you need any devise like a step pedal or something besides the piece of metal, i really love that sound, thanks ???

  • @Mistagamebrain

    you need just a slide

though (relative) high action and thicker strings are recommended

and mainly open tunings are used, I favor open g

  • @aljosha12 Really? thanks for the help man, gonna see what i can do

  • @pindowskivich Well, mostly bare. Rory was actually commonly associated with treble boosters, specifically the Hawk Treble Booster; he even currently has a signature model based on his original, produced by Flynn Amplification. But you are right, he never RELIED on fancy gadgets; just occasionally used to them to make his sound even better.

  • @pindowskivich fuckin A right man :D

  • @pindowskivich dude i use a fucking socket over a glass slide.... never bought a slide, and never will. it has that deep tone i love it try it out. sounds amazing.

  • wow he was at the same gig Hendrix played , wonder if they met... Hendrix must have been taking note of Rory... rory was very underrated

  • " so jimi What is it like being the best guitar player in the world"? to which Mr. Hendrix replied

    " i dunno , ask Rory gallagher "

    Nice !!

  • I've heard people say Roy Buchanan, and now Rory Gallagher. It was Phil Keaggy, guys get your stories straight.

  • @nicky8569 That's the problem, they are just legendary tales told. I heard Clapton said Rory was the best and Hendrix said Keaggy was the best.

  • @Bartendertastic Some reporter asked Elvis the same sort of question.

"Elvis are you the best singer in the world?" and his reply was "No sir, That would be Roy Orbison." It just goes to show that even when Jimi had the world at his feet he was still humble enough to admit to Rorys sheer class.

  • @Punorss Jimi never said it. It's just a lie.

  • @grga888 Yes but a nice one !! Bear in mind these guys were fans as well as players and were more aware of their own weaknesses than today's performers who are hyped up to the eyeballs as to how good they are- and most of them truly are crap !!

  • @LondonKumamoto ...love Jimi & Rory...but I always heard this tale of Jimi and Terry Kath (early Chicago) trading ideas...Ya never know!

  • i hate to say people are "born to play" as no one (that i know of) has been born with a guitar in their hands. however, i can say ment to play, and Rory is one of them. I'm not big into listening to the blues, although i really enjoy the blues, and respect these guys more than almost any other musician, so this is the first time i've ever heard Rory, but he blew my mind from the first few notes. He is deffinately one of the greats.

  • Rory, Duane Allman, and Elmore James; best slide guitarists ever. Best blues rock guitarist ever? Rory, of course.

  • I saw Rory five or six times in concert in the 70s

    He was a genius.

RIP Rory and I will never forget

  • love the telecaster! i have one and cant play it no where near as good as rory!

  • Yeah, Rory's the real deal. Have you checked out Eric Sardinas? He also smokes slide. Sounds like he must have been influenced by Rory, too.

  • @Dogheadj yes i have Eric is awesome and has got so much soul! slide just gets into your soul ya know? i think so many people were influenced by rory, his heart and soul is just so inspiring. Joe bonamassa is another guitarist who i think is fantastic and he cites rory as having an impact on his playing. i think just about every modern day guitar hero does!

  • I've been listening to Rory since I was a kid and I never tire of him. Legend.

  • I had never seen this before, thanks!!

  • this guy is so underrated.. he was truly great

  • Wow. I wish I had been there.

  • stunning. its amazing hes one of the very few white men to truly to the Blues justice

  • @MIKEDURSTEWITZ 'blues' doesn't do gallagher justice. he was much more than a blues musician.

  • @MIKEDURSTEWITZ The other one is Johnny Winter :)

  • @MIKEDURSTEWITZ it's kuz he irish he lived in northern ireland for a while so hes prolly seen some shit

  • @gallonofpcp Rory was born in a place called Donegal, which is near the northern border. While still only a young child, he moved to a place called Cork, which is on the far side of Ireland, and was never a dangerous place to live.
