because Experiments and style syntesis ( between rock, blues, jazz) was never so interesting as in Duane Allman case. As always, sometimes he just plays for me quite far from blues :-) my opinion about Rory, Clap, Allman
I love Clapton on John Mayall and Bluesbreakers, and especially Derek and the Dominos ( check that album, its wonderful ) but rest.... He just evolved into mainstreem rock filled with blues.. don´t get me wrong, Bad love or Forever man are really good songs but its not pure blues ( or bluesrock)... Rory is awesome in Taste, as in Clapton case, he is great, but sometimes its just too much rock and too little roll ( Bullfrog blues fits in my taste). And DA.. perhaps he was just smoking too much
rory was the reincarnation of robert johnson i mean ive never heard anyone play the blues aswell as he did clapton wants to but doesnt have it srv was great but still not as good as rory and page was more rock than blues to cut a long story short gallagher is god
Rory has the blues in his sole ,his playing and in his voice ,i think he realy feels it ,thats why along with son house he,s my fave blues guitarist ,
@Telstar62a rory never needed those paltry lists.honest to god he is on some higher planet than the rest although they are very good no doubt and i like hendrix, page etc but there is something about rory's playing that sets him apart.
i heard clapton once said he thought rory gallagher was just a pop musician. It's clear from this that claptout's understanding of the delta blues pales in comparison to rory's mastery.
Jimi Hendrix was cited in a 1969 interview shortly after Woodstock: Interviewer: "So Jimi, what's it like to be the best guitarist in the world?" Jimi: "I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher".
@My123456789101 I just bought a standard Telecaster the other day (MIM), and I'd be lying if I said that this video wasn't 99% of the reason that I got it. It sounds amazing and it's one of the most "playable" guitar I've ever picked up. Great for slide too, as I'm sure Rory would have told you.
@rrrasmus Yeah i heard that!...Interestingly- I read in an interview- when asked what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist in the world Hendrix replied........"i don't know,Ask Rory Gallagher."
@rrrasmus im the same with S R V outstanding player ,but i just don't feel it ,im just a rory pureist,to me he is a true all rounder in styles ,blues ,rock ,accostic ,slide, folk, rag ,mandaline, also a fatastic saxaphone player, many styles and insterments means for me he, is and always will be the top guy of his era .:) in guitar tearms may be johnny winter could come close but rorys always at the top
damn, this man has got the blues! and it's of 1970!! he's really great, this song broke a little piece of my soul and put it into that white telecaster...
@MarkB1ngham I heard that the band had all of their gear stolen before this Isle of Wight performance, so they had to borrow another bands instruments.
a girlie twerp -self absorbtion.. That would sum up the many years of Rory entertaining thousands and thousands of people. They would chant his name 10 minutes before he came on and stomp until he did 3 encores... I bet you could fuck up a wet dream and wouldn't know which hand to use.
Good ole Rory Gallagher. I saw him with Taste at a festival in Germany in 1969, then at the Marquee Club in 1970 and a few months later at the Isle of Wight Festival (this very gig)!. What talent and what a great loss!!
@ManyGodz i agree with u friend. A genuine Legend. I saw him once. I was 15 years old, sneeked outv my home, me nd my best friend went to see this guy, who went around, like us, in demin jeans nd jacket, nd mad shirt. I nearly cried just standing there, listening and watching this genius. the hairs on my neck were standing on end. After the gig he came ovr, sat on the edge of the stage nd asked us how we liked the show. we were nobodys, he was a legend, u wouldnt know it listening to us chat.
@kipkaixo Yr more thn welcome squire. If you have a min, take a peek at tatooed lady from montreux in 1977. Nice version until about 03:43 where it starts to take off and from there on is an absolute barnstormer. Jazzing, one minute then ripping it up the next. He was usually too shy for the high jinks of rock n roll but in this performance shows he could do the tinsel as well as the next, if that was all that matters. Saw him 3 times, including his last gig: RIP.
Any Gallagher fans out there who wanna real treat, put 'shin kicker montreux 1979' into the search window n click on the first vid that comes up. It'll tear your face off. The opening chords sound like the sex pistols on acid - I thought he was playing a chainsaw for a min. After that he takes off like he's on a rocket. A truly astonishing performance.
@dermotwalker ta for the 79 montreux link, wow,.... barnstorming from start to finish, he was at one with that guitar, was it mckenna on drums, bass player gerry mc avoy, like you said..... was completly a truly astonishing performance .. saw rory four times live, he is sadly missed.. thanks again, kipper
@jebas1322 thing is aswell. i went to the guitar shop to have a look at some hollowbodies. came away with a danelectro, yeah definitely not wanted one since i heard he had one... haha. the impact this man has had on my guitar playing keeps creeping up on me.
Ahhhhhh the Isle Of Wight a great weekend smokin it up with 600,000 of my closest friends. Those days and the great musicians like Rory are sadly gone.
@Iwannaretire In 1971 Ihad a great argument with someone who had been to that festival and thought that Charlie Mc Kracken was Rory Gallagher !! " Well he was playing a white guitar" (Charlie had a white Bass on the Album Cover). - Great fan he was !!
@mussman717word except rory had more talent in his pinky than jack withe ever had or will have. but that's okay, since jack is one of the last great musicians, and a glimpse of hope for music
who gives a fuck about the rock n roll hall of fame..... its a joke at this point.... some of the musicians in the hall of fame as it is, is embarassing, rory is too good for the hall of fame
Charlie Vanderkooii one of my old buddy told me of "Taste " i knew a lil Rory but he sounds like Willie Dixon and He rips like Johnny Winter! Great Stuff!!
I saw Rory many many times, but with the Taste, 1969 and 1970 in Hamburg, Rory was on that time the real guitar super star in Hamburg, the Taste, specially with the high dynamism drummer John Wilson, was the the best from Rory`s alltime band,
Rory was the best guitar player the British Isles, from all time, Rory for ever,
@eamonn1983 Dear oh yes indeed !! It is a great pity that his "example" is not used to warn young drinkers today . I have read three books about Rory and you have to read between the lines as they all skate around the issue. He did die from an infection after a liver transplant - but he would not have been in that position had he been a sensible drinker. The other emphasis on the prescriptive
drugs he was taking does not answer the question -"if he didn't drink as well"
What kills me is, if you look around 2:02 you can see what he's using for a slide. It looks like a piece of 3/4" copper pipe. Rory never relied on fancy gadgets, foot petals or effects. Just him and his guitar. I defy anyone these days to perform that bare, and be THAT good. I will be the first in line to buy your CD.
He's using a tarnished brass slide, and most likely he is using one of his vintage Vox AC-30's and a Treble Booster from that era (that's where Brian May got the idea to use the amp and treble booster with Queen)
mmmh...yep// I totally agree with you...had one TASTE album I'd inherited from my uncle...I remember being strangely taken by it...+ public enemy n#1 and all other Rory stuff...the best white guy doing BLUES
@pindowskivich He used a Vox AC30 with a Rangemaster Treble Booster on this .In later years he used a Hawk Booster ( Calling Card - Secret Agent ) and an Ibanez TS808 but not much else !! Always a valve amp of some kind . The early Thin Lizzy sound was a Rangemaster into a Marshall by the way !! If you watch some more videos you will see that Rory utilised the controls on the guitar a lot.
For his type of tone the basics were to turn the amp up and the guitar down.
@pindowskivich Well, mostly bare. Rory was actually commonly associated with treble boosters, specifically the Hawk Treble Booster; he even currently has a signature model based on his original, produced by Flynn Amplification. But you are right, he never RELIED on fancy gadgets; just occasionally used to them to make his sound even better.
@pindowskivich dude i use a fucking socket over a glass slide.... never bought a slide, and never will. it has that deep tone i love it try it out. sounds amazing.
@Bartendertastic Some reporter asked Elvis the same sort of question.
"Elvis are you the best singer in the world?" and his reply was "No sir, That would be Roy Orbison." It just goes to show that even when Jimi had the world at his feet he was still humble enough to admit to Rorys sheer class.
@grga888 Yes but a nice one !! Bear in mind these guys were fans as well as players and were more aware of their own weaknesses than today's performers who are hyped up to the eyeballs as to how good they are- and most of them truly are crap !!
i hate to say people are "born to play" as no one (that i know of) has been born with a guitar in their hands. however, i can say ment to play, and Rory is one of them. I'm not big into listening to the blues, although i really enjoy the blues, and respect these guys more than almost any other musician, so this is the first time i've ever heard Rory, but he blew my mind from the first few notes. He is deffinately one of the greats.
@Dogheadj yes i have Eric is awesome and has got so much soul! slide just gets into your soul ya know? i think so many people were influenced by rory, his heart and soul is just so inspiring. Joe bonamassa is another guitarist who i think is fantastic and he cites rory as having an impact on his playing. i think just about every modern day guitar hero does!
@gallonofpcp Rory was born in a place called Donegal, which is near the northern border. While still only a young child, he moved to a place called Cork, which is on the far side of Ireland, and was never a dangerous place to live.
because Experiments and style syntesis ( between rock, blues, jazz) was never so interesting as in Duane Allman case. As always, sometimes he just plays for me quite far from blues :-) my opinion about Rory, Clap, Allman

"Might die from whiskey, gambling sure won't be my doom". How horribly prophetic,.
eamonn1983 1 year ago 3

I will be the first in line to buy your CD.
pindowskivich 1 year ago 11
He's using a tarnished brass slide, and most likely he is using one of his vintage Vox AC-30's and a Treble Booster from that era (that's where Brian May got the idea to use the amp and treble booster with Queen)
nicky8569 1 year ago
mmmh...yep// I totally agree with you...had one TASTE album I'd inherited from my uncle...I remember being strangely taken by it...+ public enemy n#1 and all other Rory stuff...the best white guy doing BLUES
PoireauMan68 1 year ago
@pindowskivich He used a Vox AC30 with a Rangemaster Treble Booster on this .In later years he used a Hawk Booster ( Calling Card - Secret Agent ) and an Ibanez TS808 but not much else !! Always a valve amp of some kind . The early Thin Lizzy sound was a Rangemaster into a Marshall by the way !! If you watch some more videos you will see that Rory utilised the controls on the guitar a lot.
For his type of tone the basics were to turn the amp up and the guitar down.
domnal 1 year ago
@pindowskivich if u ask me its a brass slide as can be bought
I got a slightly shorter one myself, but one could use a piece of pipe as well
but no matter what the story behind that slide is, its a awesome song + perfomance
aljosha12 1 year ago 9
@aljosha12 Do you need any devise like a step pedal or something besides the piece of metal, i really love that sound, thanks ???
Mistagamebrain 4 months ago
@Mistagamebrain
you need just a slide
though (relative) high action and thicker strings are recommended
and mainly open tunings are used, I favor open g
aljosha12 4 months ago
@aljosha12 Really? thanks for the help man, gonna see what i can do
Mistagamebrain 4 months ago
@pindowskivich Well, mostly bare. Rory was actually commonly associated with treble boosters, specifically the Hawk Treble Booster; he even currently has a signature model based on his original, produced by Flynn Amplification. But you are right, he never RELIED on fancy gadgets; just occasionally used to them to make his sound even better.

" so jimi What is it like being the best guitar player in the world"? to which Mr. Hendrix replied
" i dunno , ask Rory gallagher "
Nice !!
Bartendertastic 1 year ago 4
I've heard people say Roy Buchanan, and now Rory Gallagher. It was Phil Keaggy, guys get your stories straight.
nicky8569 1 year ago
@nicky8569 That's the problem, they are just legendary tales told. I heard Clapton said Rory was the best and Hendrix said Keaggy was the best.
stonedpimpdaddy 1 year ago
@Bartendertastic Some reporter asked Elvis the same sort of question.
"Elvis are you the best singer in the world?" and his reply was "No sir, That would be Roy Orbison." It just goes to show that even when Jimi had the world at his feet he was still humble enough to admit to Rorys sheer class.
Punorss 1 year ago
@Punorss Jimi never said it. It's just a lie.
grga888 1 year ago
@grga888 Yes but a nice one !! Bear in mind these guys were fans as well as players and were more aware of their own weaknesses than today's performers who are hyped up to the eyeballs as to how good they are- and most of them truly are crap !!
domnal 1 year ago
@LondonKumamoto ...love Jimi & Rory...but I always heard this tale of Jimi and Terry Kath (early Chicago) trading ideas...Ya never know!

i hate to say people are "born to play" as no one (that i know of) has been born with a guitar in their hands. however, i can say ment to play, and Rory is one of them. I'm not big into listening to the blues, although i really enjoy the blues, and respect these guys more than almost any other musician, so this is the first time i've ever heard Rory, but he blew my mind from the first few notes. He is deffinately one of the greats.
dillioneberle 1 year ago
Rory, Duane Allman, and Elmore James; best slide guitarists ever. Best blues rock guitarist ever? Rory, of course.
Gallagherfreak100 1 year ago 9
I saw Rory five or six times in concert in the 70s
He was a genius.
RIP Rory and I will never forget
MrMolfish 1 year ago 3
love the telecaster! i have one and cant play it no where near as good as rory!
MrSkeff 2 years ago
Yeah, Rory's the real deal. Have you checked out Eric Sardinas? He also smokes slide. Sounds like he must have been influenced by Rory, too.
Dogheadj 2 years ago
@Dogheadj yes i have Eric is awesome and has got so much soul! slide just gets into your soul ya know? i think so many people were influenced by rory, his heart and soul is just so inspiring. Joe bonamassa is another guitarist who i think is fantastic and he cites rory as having an impact on his playing. i think just about every modern day guitar hero does!
MrSkeff 1 year ago
I've been listening to Rory since I was a kid and I never tire of him. Legend.

@gallonofpcp Rory was born in a place called Donegal, which is near the northern border. While still only a young child, he moved to a place called Cork, which is on the far side of Ireland, and was never a dangerous place to live.
