  • Huge fan of Dr Feelgood!! Gotta see this.

  • when is oil city confidential coming out!

  • @chimpo3003 Yeah, i know that's how Temple films, and it's a shame isn't it?

When the subject of the film is distracted by the person supposedly presenting it, then perhaps it's Temple presenting Temple instead of the Feelgoods?!

I think Temple ALMOST did a good job and i think a LOT of people could have done a LOT better job of it.

    An opportunity missed!

  • @snackleforkofemir I was blown away by this when they showed it on BBC 3 or 4 but maybe you're right and there is a better film to be made about Dr Feelgood, after all the best thing in it was Wilko Johnson with or without a guitar he was hilarious, mesmerising and genius maybe more Wilko and less film clips though I enjoyed them in context and also the background history on Canvey.

  • If you can get to Bath, UK on 16 November, the Bath Film Festival are screening OIL CITY CONFIDENTIAL, Julien Temple's terrific documentary about Dr Feelgood, followed by a live performance by The Wilko Johnson Band. Happening at Komedia in Bath. Unmissable!

  • The first batch of DVDs must of been recalled. Mine was official and the signatures don't read.

  • WE all know those excerpts blips are from Robbery & Payroll.

  • well what a anti climax ???? as a long term feelgood fan,for way over 30years,i cannot beleive the current line up never got shown ??they are carrying the feelgood LEE BRILLEAUX r.n.b. legacy??STEVE WALWYN,PHIL MITCHELL.KEVIN MORRIS.ROBERT KANE,.have over 60 YEARS SERVICE in DR FEELGOOD??? ,they play atthe canvey ISLAND LEE BRILLEAUX memorial every year ,with THE 3 ORIGINAL FEELGOODS?THEY RAAWWWKKK MAN thames delta blues,FANK FUK FOR ESSEX ROCK ,.,AMEN

  • @honkydudeman The movie is about Dr Feelgood - the Band. Not Dr Feelgood - the franchise. The current carriers of the name are a good unit but I've seen other (tribute) bands that are just as good. Chris Fenwick (featured in the movie) owns the band name and thus the "franchise" - he's featured prominently in the movie and if he wanted any current carriers of the band-name to be in it...they'd Be in it.

  • Having now seen the film, and being a lifelong Feelgoods fan i have to ask why live footage of the band is cut up with too many inserts of old black and white film?!

I got the idea of comparing the band to a bunch of villains tearing into London in the transit and belting back to Canvey, but did it HAVE to be at the expense of live footage?

  • @snackleforkofemir I agree. I enjoyed the movie in that it was great seeing the Real Feelgoods with interviews - and I dug the Idea of cutting it with old brit gangster movies - but there was too much of it, the editing was choppy - and the point was overdone at the expense of more music...Temple was trying to keep the energy going...too much Richard Attenborough trying to look stoically psychotic...not enough live R&R

  • @slideharp1

I recorded the film when it was shown, but i know i'll never watch it again - i'll just stick to the records and the YouTube clips.

There were a couple of clips in the film i'd not seen before, but hacked up by Julien Temple they were frustrating instead of enjoyable.

  • @snackleforkofemir Yeah, A pity they didn't take 'Going Back Home' (the real Feelgoods' legacy for posterity) and do a Redux, maybe. The concert combined with interviews and maybe some gangster shit thrown in for continuity. F'rinstance, a real Dramatic bit on GBH(!)...Wilko takes a solo on "I'm a Hog For You" 24 or it 36 bars of TWO NOTES...the tension is fantastic...There's the Drama...

  • @slideharp1

Ahh, the guitar solo in "I'm A Hog For You Baby"!!

I've played that to SO many people as an example of THE guitar solo!! .... and i've decided that the world is comprised of two sorts - those that "get" it ........... and everybody else!!

By the way, i was at The Feelgoods show at Aylesbury Friars (the show they released one side of the "Stupidity" free 7" single from) that's my jaw you can hear hitting the floor!

    Lol!

    Just gotta love the Feelgoods!

  • @snackleforkofemir Yeah, that's about it..... Some guys' goddit...and some guys don't.

  • what a quality film and thanks to julien temple for highlighting an important band

  • If you only see one more film in your lifetime, make sure it's this one.

Quite possibly the best music film ever.

  • A 'brilliant piece of documentary work'! ...I really love 'Nine Below Zero'.. I didn't realise how much, 'Dr feelgood' influenced that 'Eighties band' whom I' admired greatly.... Thankyou, Julien!! Keep up the good work.... I think that 'Big Audio Dynamite' would really l...ove your interlaced 'use' of 50's B+W film footage to illustrate..I didn't intend to watch the 'programme', but your 'presentation' kept me 'hooked'...nice one!!..'Keep on keeping on'!!See more

  • OMG I hope it'll come out on DVD too !!! JUST GREAT !!!!! =D

  • this is being shown on tv next week unsure of which day

  • Dr Feelgood are the ultimate UK band

  • and with Hawkwind at Southend.......amazin' band. the place was chocka.....

  • Still makes the hair on my neck stand up !!!

  • Oh to turn back time and be at those 70's gigs again! So raw and exciting after the Glam Rock era - saw them first on a prog called "The Geordie Scene" (I think) and thought "WOW !" - They're my all time favourite "live" band - and the music is still electrifying. Pity the "Going Back Home" dvd wasn't a complete film of the "Stupidity" album. I still rate that tour and those versions of "Back In The Night" and "Roxette" as the best.

  • Do you know if the Stupidity concert was actually filmed? and if its available.

  • @oldportboy Don't know how much footage was shot, only that the dvd was same as original video - apart from the "bonus" sections. Leaves you wanting more, though.

  • CANVEY BOYS!

  • The clip at 1.25 is from Brighton Rock , where Pinkie ( Richard Attenborough ) carves a bookie called Brewer for non-payment of protection money ; great film !!

  • An influence on US punk not just UK

  • fuck yeeeah! Canvey Boys!!!

  • Saw them at the Hammersmith Palais in December 1976. A few months later Wilko quit the band. The greatest band of their era.

  • I was there, too! Hammersmith Palais in December 1976. One of my first ever gigs, cracking.

  • Small world! I think they might have done two nights - it was advertised as 'Feelgoods Christmas Party'. The night I went they were backed by an awful American band 'Clover' (I think) and the Lew Lewis band - who I saw a few times around the London pubs. The Feelgoods were about half an hour late getting on because of a problem with the sound system. There was almost a riot - I THINK they opened with 'Riot in cell black number nine'... and the place went nuts. Happy days! I was 16.

  • @number94 I can't remember as much detail as you - I was 16, too, and was madly in love with my first b/f who I went with. I suspect we were at the bar for the support! I remember two blokes near us, one shouted "Roxette", the other "Back in the Night" after every song. Mayhem ensued when they were played.

  • @number94 Hammersmith Palais me too ! I seem to remember there being an obvious air of tension between the band. That band Clover ? They played on the first Elvis Costello LP.

  • @quodog1 I bought the the first Costello single and gave away, foolishly as it was pretty good. Probably worth a few quid now. Was it a limited edition from Stiff? That gig was the first time I saw Punks - with all the gear - on mass. I am really looking forward to the Oil City DVD.

  • A superb band. I saw them at Town & Country 1989. Despite it not being the original line up they still gave it 110%. Seen Wilko's band a few times at the Standard & Putney. Very pleased a film is being made about them

  • About time the geezers were recognised as the pioneers they truly were

  • Pardon my ignorance, but what is the name of the film whose scene is edited in at 0:50? Also 1:35? Any of the films whose scenes are spliced in, actually...

  • @lysergicgraphics at 0:50 the clip is from the Stanley Baker film 'Robbery', a take on the Great Train Robbery.

  • Thanks! From reading up on "Robbery" on IMDB it looks like one to look for

  • The main film clips used by Julien Temple are 'Night and the City', 'Payroll', and the one with the MKII Jaguars is 'Robbery', based loosely on the Great Train Robbery - they all have a page on Wikipedia. Hope this helps.

  • Man I gotta check out British New Wave cinema

  • This is a BRILLIANT film! We are going to the Canvey opening night in Feb

  • Trailer looks great!

  • it is a brilliant film, Temple's finest moment so far!

  • This is just great. Wilko is a legend!

  • Fantastic* But that doesn't quite cover it, it was one of the best i've seen! Especially when Wilko Johnson came in HIMSELF!

  • Saw this film, was fantistic!

  • I hope it'll come out on DVD. Love the picture of young Lee playing with his punch and judy by the look of it.

  • DVDs should be out in 2010, following the cinema release (Feb 2nd 2010). Check the website/FB/Twitter for dates and updates.
