  • I wanted to thumbs-down this but I can't, it's fucking Neil-SUCH an activist (tho he's from Canada-does he have US citizenship? Methinks not-before you all get your panties in a wad-YES HE HAS TO HAVE CITIZENSHIP TO CRITICIZE US. Nuff said.) Otherwise it's just his humble opinion. But this SOB is the Mark Twain of our song-writing century. Neil-your politics are despicable, but your songwriting is sublime. I don't know which carries more weight. So I'll listen to both & make up my own mind.

  • The very first time I heard this cd was on my 2 disc cd set of his called Decade. I heard it on disc 2... and I cried my eyes out. Right when the guitar began playing. I have no idea why... but Neil Young can touch anyone's heart. He touches mine... It's so sad people don't feel this kind of music like they should.

  • Yer sure George Bush has soul......an arsehole...

  • What's with all the bullshit political crap on this song? This son't isn't about politics at all...jesus christ...Neil Young wrote this song when he saw Richard Nixon walking out of the hospital his wife was staying at all those years ago...this has nothing to do with politics, but Neil recognizing that every man, whether you agree with what he has done or not...feels personal anguish. If anything the whole George Bush in replace of Nixon weakens the song, but it's all about the times I guess

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Came back to respond to another comment, only to see your's, directed at no one, and why not, if you want an answer?

"Hospitals have made him cry," but what is your source regarding Nixon's wife?

My first response which begins with: "I believe that all the while," makes my point, and the addition of Bush only adds to the political slant, Re: Let's Impeach The President," which dosen't mean Bush is without a soul, and he didn't visit his wife in any hospital.

    Peace.

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Just had to add that by writing, "Whether you agree with what he has done or not," you must be referring to Nixon's political decisions, aren't you?

As for Neil seeing Nixon coming out of a hospital, I'm looking forward to reading your source, given it would only make sense that a former president would ensure his visits with his wife were private, beginning and ending with Nixon entering and leaving the hospital with as much privacy as possible.

    Peace.

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Finally, beginning from the 2nd reply below this one, I've never had a 'friend,' 'subscriber,' or someone I've subscribed to, slam me. They address their (polite) difference's directly to me.

For me, especially when it comes to Neil, I don't feel comfortable with the vulgarity or any level of anger regarding a reply/comment.

If you're just going to come back with more of the same, maybe I need to rethink my subscrition/friendship.

    Too bad you weren't there.

    Peace.

  • @rockinroller7

I wasn't even making specific statements against anyone, just a statement in general. It wasn't meant to be vulgar or angry, but as I was not especially sober at the time my tact may not have been fully involved in my reply. My apologies.

  • @rockinroller7

On that note, I wasn't even even aware we were friends on here or that you had subscribed as I don't particularly may much attention to that.

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Again, we seem to have something in common.

After about 4 years here I have something like 75 plus subscribers, only subscribing to about half that many. Too many people are here just trolling for subscribers, sending out messages to groups, promising to subscribe to your site if you subscribe to theirs. About a third of my subscribers are Neil fans, and I'm glad to have them.

On your page today I found music from my first Neil and Crazy Horse concert. Thanks.

    Peace.

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Strange that a reply/comment of a positive, and even humorous nature should be flagged a spam.

Always great to hear from someone who also is a 'soul' full of Neil fan,LOL! and also GETS IT!

    Peace.

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Well you might want to realize that the inception of a song can spread like red fire ants and cover a whole different (human) body of works in the end. Damn I should have used a rainbow analogy. Also, the area of the hospital Nixon visited was called "the Right Wing Pavilion" of The Partisan Hospital. Who am I? Just a life-long friend of Neils and he told me you are incorrect. But still a cool likeable guy.

  • Neil has written several songs about politics, but I wouldn't call them "Political songs," which has been alluded to here, he describes, or finds something "Real," inside the political figure .

Sure, "Let's Impeach The President," was political, but someone had to step up and say what was true about what was and has happened to our country, and how our rights have been violated via the 'patriot act," which should be abolished,

because all Americans are patriots by birth.

    Peace.

  • @rockinroller7 I was playing this song on two Ytubes about 5 secs apart and the echo was sort of ecstasy but not the drug. I think I know what you mean- you are talking about the complexity of Neils lyrics and one singular interpretation is never sufficient - like saying Like a Rolling Stone by Dylan was just about vindictiveness. It was a statement about society but sure it also boarded on the political and personal and many other themes (well an upside-down analogy..sorry)

  • @11xzxzxz not boarded but bordered .. mikespeak.

  • No I meant boarded ..ha

  • @11xzxzxz No, upside down is good. It's right there. Just as Neil brings Bush in to sit and asks Nixon's 'soul,' to move over, the lyrics are the same but directed at Bush, a different personality, but even Bush, "has got it."

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @rockinroller7 I guess I missed the record it was on and I guess I heard it on Decade and not much since. I might interpret "even richard nixon has soul" in the context of what I understand from the song as nixon having vision, skewed as it may be. Or it could be more stinging and satirical but I don't think so. Maybe the closet Nixon got to soul was when he met Elvis in that phony hand-shake drug deal gone bad (2nitesthe). So soul is in one sense "charisma" and who knows if it's real?

  • @11xzxzxz I believe that all the while Nixon was tapping his most trusted "Men," around him, he was paranoid, a drunk, and new all about Watergate even though he said in a live press conference to the nation, he had nothing to do with it and knew nothing about it, eventually letting those around him take the fall with resignation after resignation, until his own in August of '74.

Neil's point was that with all the harm he'd done to our country,"Even Richard Nixon has got soul.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @rockinroller7 OK I can agree with that but might add that with all the harm Nixon's done that Nixon has soul because he is human and a lot of other people and presidents make harmful mistakes, maybe not as bad and we don't know about them, but we are all human. Personally, I don't trust Obama, mr transparency not; so I guess I would say Obama has that soul too.

  • @rockinroller7 Also if Obama was transparent, I would not like much him either. He is not the worst but not near the best president. One example would be that Obama can speak to other countries of American mistakes to placate them or try to get European troops into Afghanistan or share more responsibility instead of letting the US do it all. But on too many occasions O didn't mention that America is doing better than most countries would. We could be usurping more and be more unpleasant.ha.

  • @11xzxzxz

I agree with all you wrote.

But he hasn't done much of anything noteworthy as president.

Granted it takes both parties to get things done, but he hasn't spoken out in anger, as I believe it takes at times, to drive home an issue that needs to be worked out for the improvement of all of our lives.

So, I suppose, 'even Obama has got soul.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @rockinroller7 Yeah I think Obama came in at a real bad time. I think you might be right about Obama speaking out in anger but Dick Morris' political surveys and other Pollsters will have let Obama know when to get angry and what time of the day as they have recent presidents. Yeah I'm so skeptical of politicians.

  • @rockinroller7 I think most other countries, particularly the most powerful, act worse than we do or would if they had more power. I think O could present a more realistic view of us. I like that he is reaching out and Bush didn't, I guess I just don't like the way he reaches out.

  • NO...Neil you have soul...love how he changes lyrics. The beaches r to crowded for a stroll...Great song...Neil your a treasure.

  • "Campaigner" is a truly compelling achievement of Young's acoustic style, nice to see Neil has still got it in 2008. An empathetic guy, he wanted to see something in Poor Nixon, who he called out in "Ohio". In this take he throws in Bush, that was the topic in 2008, not bad to mix things up sometimes. Bush has some Texan dry drunk version of soul. Nixon, walking the beach in a suit, was a tough case. Anyway, Young's meaningful innovative emotional acoustic technique deserves a Nobel Prize.

  • Well...at least the only song of him actually singing it instead of the many people trying to do covers of the song....

  • This wasn't written as a political song, I reckon. It's a song about being human in America.

  • love this song ~ another heartbreaker...

  • whos the retard that disliked this? come on own up straight and we might let you go.

  • A great example of Neil's work. Meaningful, powerful, beautiful and never ages.

  • Wild gift horses! I like horses and healthy veins!

All my love Neil thanks for not selling out or turning into a werido!

  • God I love this song!

  • This truly is Neil's hidden masterpiece.

  • The US is dispatching Patriot defensive missiles to four countries Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait and keeping two ships in the Gulf capable of shooting down Iranian missiles. Washington is also helping Saudi Arabia develop a force to protect its oil installations.....our friends, the Saudis. Gotta protect that oil, no matter the cost.

  • @Eric781 Do you drive a car? Does it run on oil? If so, then YES, we have to protect that oil, because for some strange reason, no one wanted to drill for oil off the California coast. Or trade with Mexico for their third-highest world oil production!

  • Tension between the US and Iran heightened dramatically today with the disclosure that Barack Obama is deploying a missile shield to protect American allies in the Gulf from attack by Tehran.......remember this day because this act sets the table for events that will be felt years from now. "To secure peace is to prepare for war."-Karl Von Clausewitz

  • @Eric781 We are being softened up to be sucked into this conflict. Exactly the same way as we were systematically lied to in the lead up to Iraq.

  • WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday proposed another two years of hefty spending in Iraq and Afghanistan, seeking Congress' approval for about $160 billion this year and again in fiscal 2011 to pay war costs.

The war spending proposed by Obama is only slightly less than in each of the last two years of the administration of President George Bush....meet the new boss, same as the old boss. The chosen one will get a pass though because the media tells us so....

  • Even Darth Vader had it: soul.

  • haha

  • KDX is a yuppie dope who has his head in the sand. Bush broke laws? man your an idiot in the true meaning of the word, Bush protected you. Harpstrung, what did he (Bush) fuck up. KX sounds like he's talkiin about Obambo. Listen to FLIP FLOP OBAMA. God bless FOX.

  • Boy are you stupid scootar.

  • fathers=hand=i?????????????????????????

  • Beautiful! One of his very best!

  • I find it mind boggling that a song of such caliber was really never released officially till Neil Young's "Decade"...which is basically a "greatest hits" or more accurately "greatest songs" release of the songwriter/performers own. That this was on no "official released album" is really a crime...I think.

  • LOL

At first i thought you were kidding.

Okay, first of all Neil Young speaks out against bush constantly in his song writing. You obviously don't understand the basic message of this song.

In addition to that, Neil Young has always put his music first, way in front of his income.

But how could i expect you to understand that when such basic concepts are completely misinterpreted.

Have you ever heard his song "Let's Impeach The President" on the album "Living With War"?

    ;)

  • In direction to aztiff

  • even richard nixon has got soullll he's gott itt

  • To all of you who still hate President Bush,

please understand that the majority of things that "went wrong" during his Presidency were actions of his cabinet. As far as foreign relations in Africa, Asia, and South America go President Bush is one of the best modern Presidents.

Please criticize his actions, not his character, you could not have done a better job under the circumstances he was forced to deal with.

  • fuck u man! lol remind me of sum cunt who was buming em for 20 quid an hour lol

  • IDIOT! The President is responsible for his cabinet. The flaw in his character is that he ran for (an was illegaly appointed to) an office he was unqualified for. He is totaly responsible for his watch. Instead of upholding the laws he was sworn to, he broke them with reckless abandon. And yes, I could have done a better job.I see you guys are already trying to rewrite history, better stick Fox-world if you expect anyone to buy it.

  • WORST PRESIDENT EVER

  • you like it so much you can't even spell his name properly. jackass.

  • thank you for posting this .....one of my favorites by Niel.

  • Even Richard Nixon has got soul . . . and Gerald Ford said after the Pardon that our "long national nightmare (was) over". As we near the end of the Worst Presidency Ever (a.k.a, "W"), how little we suspected then as we laughed our asses off at Neil's gentle tweak of Tricky Dick. Even Richard Nixon would not have fucked things up as bad as George W. Bush. Even in his beach-walking wingtips, he was not an overgrown frat boy, and yes indeed in his maudlin self-pity, he had a bucketload of soul.

  • Neil wrote this song in mid-1976 after seeing photos of Nixon leaving the hospital where his wife Pat was recuperating from a stroke. Her entire left side was paralyzed and she lost her ability to speak and Dick was deeply upset and shaken by seeing his wife in such a state.

  • My god! His voice may show some sigs of age, but his tecnique has gotten smoother and more complex. Good for him. A great song and a super performance.

  • Political bash: The future of the United States hangs in the balance-what better excuse for a party?

  • Lovely version, great sound quality - thanks!

  • perhaps one of my favorite neil tunes ever !!!

  • Heart of Gold was the only Neil young song to reach number one on the billboard charts.

  • Only one number one song in his entire career.

Am I the only music lover who loses sleep over that statistic?

  • one number one song? what do you mean?

  • Nah. Neil Young could have put out all kinds of number 1 hits if he wanted to, but that never interested him. "Harvest" and 'Heart of Gold' only bored him and brought on the brilliant "ditch trilogy", so I'm glad he didn't give a shit about commercial appeal...

  • I like the way he sings George BuuuuuuuuuSh has got soul. Nice inflection Neil Young! luv it. ~cg5

  • goosebumps, he is just so great. thanks VinoDaMusica for so many great video's. Neil young is my all time favorite and was really wanting him here, not over there but now I am glad because of your videos. keep rockin

  • Geweldig nummer, en het enige empathische over Richard Nixon vanaf de Westcoast. Ook goed met George Bush. Varieer zelf met 'Prins Bernhard', 'Fidel Castro', e.v.a.

  • Vino ik geniet van je opnames.

    Joe

  • Mooi hè?!

  • Goede opname qua geluid
