  • I grandi signori del Sud. Quante emozioni.

  • some people complain about why these times in music don't exist anymore but I think they're everlasting. Precedence causes perpetual existence of itself... Life is lively.

  • wait a second, what is Stype wearing? a kilt, a dress, an apron? what is it?

  • fuck u to the people that hate this this is fucking music and art!!!! and no its not

    LIKE A ROLLING STONE ASSHOLES!!!!

  • omg thats like a rolling stone

  • @wweecwcollin tell me something

where do you here like a rolling stone? i think you need your hearing checked

and listen to them back and forth!!!! two totally different songs dipshit

  • @SuperTomtom1981 he's singing the lyrics at the end dipshit -_-

  • RIP REM !!! NUFF SAID !! GONNA MISS YOU !!!

  • some bands only ever make 1 epic record, REM done at least 10.

  • @therushden I think REM made more than 10 mate !!! respect to you as a true music lover recognising one of the greatest bands of all time !! gonna miss them !! seen them many times around europe at festivals they always blew everybody else off the stage !! all i can say now is listen to a musical masterpeice and respect to you my friend for knowing what a proper tune from a proper band is

  • so much depth ... so much emotion ... R.E.M. never faked it ... they could have hung around and toured occaisionally to prop up the bank account but that just wasn't them ... way to go guys ... way to go ...

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you R.E.M. I will never forget you!!! What wonderfull 31 years!

'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.'

    Leaving R.E.M never easy,

I saw the light fading out.

Find it in your heart, it's pulling me apart,

Find it in your heart, it's pulling me apart.

I told you, forever, I love you, forever, forever, forever...

  • bob dylan

  • It's crazy what you could've had.

It's crazy what you could've had.

I need this, I need this.

  • Bye bye REM…

  • he throws away his lyric-paper for this song.....nice message

  • simply brilliant !! who r the 2 fools that dislike this ? fuck me whats your idea of music!! some reality show nobody or some plastic gangster rapper !! listen to this and realise what real music is !! one of the best tunes from one of the greatest bands of all time !! enough said

  • Once upon a time you looked so fine

You threw the bums a dime in your prime... didn't you ?

Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse

When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose

    You're invisible now, You're invisible...

    you got nothing to conceal...

    GOD *heartaches*

  • @dolleee I always thought the line was "invincible" not "invisible"!!!!

  • @lipsandhooves you can find the original lyrics by looking for Bob dylan's rolling stone... that part was like a quote...

  • @dolleee I got that. I have been mishearing the lyricsfor many years!!!! Tx LnH

  • @dolleee It was Dylan's 60th birthday at around then.

  • I love Peter's shirts.

  • michael is a genius

  • amazing mike stipe doesnt look like hes dying or leaving a cancer ward, he looks amazing in a suit, and its an epic song from an epic album, and anepic live performance...

  • B-) That's true. The song on here is at least better than 99% of country music songs! But that's MHO. R.E.M., at least with their older material, can be mediocre and still beat half of the other bands/artist hands down. BUT when you listen to a song a cd for 20 years you like to see a video where they do their best to make it sound the same. B-) BTW, don't know if you love the album REVEAL like I did but there is a pretty good version of "I've Been High" on here.

  • I was central.

    I had control.

    I lost my head...

    ..I need this!

    ..I need this!

  • Sorry, but not half as good as the version on Out of Time. There is no feedback!

  • @natobanatotoo LOL. But it still isn't country - thank Stipe ! (mooddisorders above is to blame for the lame last bit ).

  • Oh no no, I love you! See, I am petting my screen. Because I love you that much.

It IS crazy what you could have had.

    God, I hate the internet.

  • I just about died when he started quoting Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone"

  • Modern Magic

  • Quite simply my fav song of all time, brilliantly sung here....my funeral tune

  • The best version of this song is on the Perfect Square DVD. That song is the best thing REM has ever done. Live or in the studio. Period. Best performance ever of any artist. The I've said it. Now you can all give me thumbs up.

  • Although I love the perfect square version, THIS is how this song was meant to be portrayed. It has haunted me for 21 years now, from the time that I was 12 to 33, and it will haunt me til the day I'm dead...

  • " It's crazy what you could've had". " It's crazy what you could've had". " It's crazy what you could've had". " I need ".

    " I need this ".

  • @tadness80

    " It's crazy what you could've had".

    " It's crazy what you could've had".

    " It's crazy what you could've had".

    " I need

    I, I need this ".

  • @tadness80

    ya...need this.

  • this song brings lots of thoughts to my mind.... absolutely perfect

  • best version ive seen

  • Can anyone tell me what album this is on? I searched Itunes and unplugged and it did not show. What a fantastic rendition of an exquisite song. Legend.

  • @lipsandhooves out of time, it has been said before

  • @mockjam1 I know it is on out of time. I was asking about the "live version". Presumably you aware of the difference between "live" and "studio".

  • @lipsandhooves my apologies, should have read it more clearly. Well this has never been officially released. I have a "bootleg" cd that contains both of R.E.M.'s mtv unplugged shows from 1991 and this one in 2001. It's unedited so contains more of the chat and some tracks that didn't make the tv broadcast so worth checking out. You could probably find it online somewhere.

  • @mockjam1 Mockjam Thanks for that. Apologies for the tone of my last post it was v.snotty. I will try and search out. Happy friday thanks. Lnh

  • i can play this all day on guitar

  • it's crazy what she could've had...

  • Absolute brillant song and wow its live FAntastic! Reminds mE of all the reasons women make meN suffer!

  • gibt nicht viel zu sagen ... einer der besten songs aller zeiten!

  • Nininininininininini? Seriously?

  • Out of Time - Best Album

  • @commanderjohnkoenig

idk i like document but no doubt this is the most powerful song that they ever wrote

  • love-hate. very beautiful but have everytime a lump in throat......

  • Love this :) xxx

  • This is so special. To me, it means a world. You give everything and the person in front of you has nothing to offer ("a bone") and you remember when things were different - somehow you gave up and you wish you could turn back to that moment!

  • This my absolute favourite song:)

  • anyone got the live version off the jools holland later REM special ... i think it was for the release of UP .....would love to see this recording again as it blew me away ..... please help !!!!

  • My favourite song of all time, by any artist. Such emotions brought on.

  • this sounds better than recorded version. truely a beautiful song with touching lyrics.

  • i need this.

  • beautiful.

  • Absolutly wonderful song. thx for posting!!!

  • I love this song....thank you!!

  • That was so beautiful, I might cry.

  • The very best REM song. It pains me that they didn't play it here in São Paulo back in 2008.

  • One of their best..................

  • Comment removed

  • this sounds just like the Vines, Vision Valley.

    WTH!?!?!?

  • shivers after the first few chords :)

  • For me, this R.E.M. has gone overlooked for the most part. It's not that I don't know about it. It's just that the song title is kind of a clunker. A song title is important in catching one's attention or capturing the imagination. Here are some possible alternative titles, It's Crazy, A Bone in Your Hand, I Need This...However, Michael Stipe has a tendency in some of his songs to use the pronoun, "this" as a vague placeholder for some idea. It doesn't always serve him well.

  • @Doleafol I've always thought the title of this one, as in some other songs is more of a title for the music, and has little to do with the lyrics. The music clearly has a country feel, and lots of feedback on the record.

  • Love the ending! Dylan and REM should tour together. That'd be weird.

  • to the guy who wondered about the rehead...Stringfellow's in a great band called the posies...if you like classic power pop like big star, teenage fanclub, cheap trick, matthew sweet, GBV, ...or REM..you'd probably really like them too.

  • Comment removed

  • They should always play this. Brilliant.

  • I love this song sooo much !!!!! x

  • CHAAAA_OOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNN. thank you pony :)

  • i was central, i had control, i lost my head....(L) couldn't be better. love them so much!

  • this song is for my mother....and the years she tortured me.

  • Who is the red-haired guy playing bass in this song??

  • @Anden14 Ken Stringfellow. He plays piano for them on tour.

  • "When you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose" - genius putting Bob Dylan in there, fit perfectly. Best band in the world.

  • b e a u t i f u l

  • great song, great voice, great singer. R.E.M. a legend!!!!

  • the last part is the lyric of the "like a rolling stone" y bob dyland

  • Audience= Lucky f .... he poured it out

  • when i watch him, on video or in concert, he looks like he's in a kind of pain. like the song pulls him in and he can't stop.

"i had control, i lost my head. i need this."

  • why put the poppy video here? it's not funny. should be on hee-haw page.

J.M. STIPE- LAST OF THE BLUE -EYED SOUL SINGERS.

  • Michael, it's OK - you're n the zone!

  • saw them in college station...they put on a great show

  • Haunting.....

  • this song always makes me feel nostalgic for something i cant put my finger on

  • Thank you Michael.

  • mike mills please conet me plaing th episno, great tsong....... if u got nothing..........

  • honest song

  • Scott is brilliant here on the piano imho...

  • @caybro ...That's Mike Mills on piano.

  • @caybro who is Scott? It's Mike Mills.

  • @gameonfire No, Scott is on piano, Mike is on the pump organ

  • @caybro Scott McCaughey of Minus 5 and Young Fresh Fellows?

  • whoever dislked this is a fucking retard

  • @kazbadat damn straight!

  • It is cold in Canada and it is proven that REM warms us

  • Makes me weep! That is the point, I believe!

  • wow-.........no words

  • it is about a metal station or someting??? EST??? FUCK ALL???

  • thats freakin me out

  • stipe is one of the greatestest lyricists ever I don't think he necessarilly gets the credit he deserves, all of R.E.M's songs have meaning and great words, even the fun lighter ones

  • I'm an atheist but Stipe is god

  • Amazing. In my opinion the best album: Out of Time

  • The Bob Dylan part goes "...Once apon a time/ you looked so fine/ threw the bum a dime in your prime/ didn't you/ You go to a man who calls you/ you cant refuse/ when you've got nothing you've got nothing to lose/ your invisible now/ your invisible/ you've got nothing/ to conceal"

  • has any one got the vid with REM playing this live on Jools hollands later show , If so WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR UPLOAD !!! UPLOAD NOW !!! its to my mind the best version

  • Agree its a great version- I taped it on VCR and played it to death. Its somewhere in the depths of my ex's house now unfortunately.

  • I have got it some where on video tape , i did the same taped it and played it to death . I do have the 'later' with Jools Holland version on C.D it was on " At my most beautiful " single as a b side released in england . If that helps you track it down . one day ill get round to uploading it . If i can find it .

  • its better than album version. ;) great!

  • Thank you for finding this REM jewel. Love this since 2o years.... thank you...

  • I wonder who Michael is singing this version to/about... notice at the end of the song, just after he does the Like A Rolling Stone spoken word thing... he kinda looks up to the heavens and seems very emotional.

Granted, he always seems to get emotional during performances of this song which is possibly my favourite of all REM songs. Beautiful and sad.

  • i agree,he looks very emotional or preoucupied.........

i learned toplay that song on guitar, but i dont know really of all what he singing when the song ends......(sing my own words then)^^

Its not in the normal Lyrics of that song. But it gives this song a speziell Note.....ver ynice and one of my favourite too. graets from germany

  • Best song of the 90's....In my universe !!!

  • This is a gorgeous ballad, well captured! Michael Stipe is so phenomenal as is the entire band! CK

  • Comment removed

  • i understood " if u got nothing u got nothing to lose" and "u made my cry"...." i see u there" but the rest i have the same problems than you ^^ greats from germany

  • @StinkiwinkiPoo Indeed.. I derived the same 'feelings; from this! :)

  • Whoops, I missed an earlier comment which says Stipe is quoting parts of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone".

  • dont know about that song, sorry......

i think that song has its own meanings which only Michael maybe knows......

that song sounds like he wrote it in a dark lonely Winternight and he heard an old LP of.......maybe.....

    Bob Dylan ???? ;o)))) greats

  • Comment removed

  • Its Bob Dylan "like a rolling stone" lyrics that are spoken at the end..

  • a wonderful song! very nice

  • well, I think it means an extreme therapy

    electro shock therapy

remember how they shocked jack nicholson in one flew over the cuckoos nest?

  • possible.but in never heard it someone saying "EST", when he got this therapy. its a good idea, but i think he means

EST= a medastactic endertomal sinus tumor. its always diificult to know what Michael means, but i think this song is about a Baby who died very early and the mother.....

so-- " its crazy what u could have had"--

But i think everyone should make his own meaning off that beautifuel sad song ;o)) greats from germany

  • A musical highpoint......I tried to but never wrote such beauty

Do you know what the EST Stipe sings of? Just a quiz

  • EST= Endodermal sinus tumor.....!? but there are many possible meanings

  • Just awesome.......

  • This song is so achingly, longingly, frustratedly beautiful. I love the bit from "Like a Rolling Stone" at the end.

  • "This flower is schorced

    The film is on

    On a maddening loop"

This has to be one of the most incredible opening lines to a song, an intro which leads us into a utter misery...Stipes blood on the tracks..

  • REM4life :3

  • as good as it gets

  • how beautiful is this song? its the loss of that love of your life. that one who you did and done all but rip a limb off to keep an make it work, only to have it thrown back in your face. ah the sadness of breaking up, sorting out, throwing out. memoirabilia of a relationship disarded to a plastic black bag. sweet, sweet sadness. like i said, beautiful

  • @jalapeno30 I first read your post when I was in Taiwan, now I am back home in England. I agreed with you then and I agree with you now. Somehow having been through that, makes us better people and more aware of how to make things work better in the future

  • Never mind, this song is actually pretty bad ass! 5/5

  • Comment removed

  • holy cow this is one of the best versions I've heard...."hot lines, wanted ads, it's crazy what you could of had".

  • Sooo geiiiillll!!!!

is the 'improv' towards teh end bob dylan?

    brilliant.

  • why u hear it?? why dont u keep on hearing shakira, dude?

  • There are no words to describe how beautiful this song is!!

  • True. Perfection.

  • REM Country feed back the best song they did it is amazing

  • love it

  • u wear me out...

  • i just loves the way michaels voice "cuts" the lyrics. it sounds so heartfelt...

  • this is mike at his best, also one of the best performances of couzntry feedback i've ever seen...love it when he sings

a paper weight, a junk garage, winter rain, a honey pot...

these lyrics are so evocative, like a short film, there's so much in between that's left unsaid. crazy what you could have had...

  • I love this song and the passion & emotions behind it. It's one of my favorite REM songs in their catalog. Truly, a work of art.
