some people complain about why these times in music don't exist anymore but I think they're everlasting. Precedence causes perpetual existence of itself... Life is lively.
@therushden I think REM made more than 10 mate !!! respect to you as a true music lover recognising one of the greatest bands of all time !! gonna miss them !! seen them many times around europe at festivals they always blew everybody else off the stage !! all i can say now is listen to a musical masterpeice and respect to you my friend for knowing what a proper tune from a proper band is
so much depth ... so much emotion ... R.E.M. never faked it ... they could have hung around and toured occaisionally to prop up the bank account but that just wasn't them ... way to go guys ... way to go ...
simply brilliant !! who r the 2 fools that dislike this ? fuck me whats your idea of music!! some reality show nobody or some plastic gangster rapper !! listen to this and realise what real music is !! one of the best tunes from one of the greatest bands of all time !! enough said
amazing mike stipe doesnt look like hes dying or leaving a cancer ward, he looks amazing in a suit, and its an epic song from an epic album, and anepic live performance...
B-) That's true. The song on here is at least better than 99% of country music songs! But that's MHO. R.E.M., at least with their older material, can be mediocre and still beat half of the other bands/artist hands down. BUT when you listen to a song a cd for 20 years you like to see a video where they do their best to make it sound the same. B-) BTW, don't know if you love the album REVEAL like I did but there is a pretty good version of "I've Been High" on here.
The best version of this song is on the Perfect Square DVD. That song is the best thing REM has ever done. Live or in the studio. Period. Best performance ever of any artist. The I've said it. Now you can all give me thumbs up.
Although I love the perfect square version, THIS is how this song was meant to be portrayed. It has haunted me for 21 years now, from the time that I was 12 to 33, and it will haunt me til the day I'm dead...
Can anyone tell me what album this is on? I searched Itunes and unplugged and it did not show. What a fantastic rendition of an exquisite song. Legend.
@lipsandhooves my apologies, should have read it more clearly. Well this has never been officially released. I have a "bootleg" cd that contains both of R.E.M.'s mtv unplugged shows from 1991 and this one in 2001. It's unedited so contains more of the chat and some tracks that didn't make the tv broadcast so worth checking out. You could probably find it online somewhere.
This is so special. To me, it means a world. You give everything and the person in front of you has nothing to offer ("a bone") and you remember when things were different - somehow you gave up and you wish you could turn back to that moment!
anyone got the live version off the jools holland later REM special ... i think it was for the release of UP .....would love to see this recording again as it blew me away ..... please help !!!!
For me, this R.E.M. has gone overlooked for the most part. It's not that I don't know about it. It's just that the song title is kind of a clunker. A song title is important in catching one's attention or capturing the imagination. Here are some possible alternative titles, It's Crazy, A Bone in Your Hand, I Need This...However, Michael Stipe has a tendency in some of his songs to use the pronoun, "this" as a vague placeholder for some idea. It doesn't always serve him well.
@Doleafol I've always thought the title of this one, as in some other songs is more of a title for the music, and has little to do with the lyrics. The music clearly has a country feel, and lots of feedback on the record.
to the guy who wondered about the rehead...Stringfellow's in a great band called the posies...if you like classic power pop like big star, teenage fanclub, cheap trick, matthew sweet, GBV, ...or REM..you'd probably really like them too.
stipe is one of the greatestest lyricists ever I don't think he necessarilly gets the credit he deserves, all of R.E.M's songs have meaning and great words, even the fun lighter ones
The Bob Dylan part goes "...Once apon a time/ you looked so fine/ threw the bum a dime in your prime/ didn't you/ You go to a man who calls you/ you cant refuse/ when you've got nothing you've got nothing to lose/ your invisible now/ your invisible/ you've got nothing/ to conceal"
has any one got the vid with REM playing this live on Jools hollands later show , If so WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR UPLOAD !!! UPLOAD NOW !!! its to my mind the best version
I have got it some where on video tape , i did the same taped it and played it to death . I do have the 'later' with Jools Holland version on C.D it was on " At my most beautiful " single as a b side released in england . If that helps you track it down . one day ill get round to uploading it . If i can find it .
I wonder who Michael is singing this version to/about... notice at the end of the song, just after he does the Like A Rolling Stone spoken word thing... he kinda looks up to the heavens and seems very emotional.
Granted, he always seems to get emotional during performances of this song which is possibly my favourite of all REM songs. Beautiful and sad.
i understood " if u got nothing u got nothing to lose" and "u made my cry"...." i see u there" but the rest i have the same problems than you ^^ greats from germany

this is mike at his best, also one of the best performances of couzntry feedback i've ever seen...love it when he sings
a paper weight, a junk garage, winter rain, a honey pot...
these lyrics are so evocative, like a short film, there's so much in between that's left unsaid. crazy what you could have had...

I love this song and the passion & emotions behind it. It's one of my favorite REM songs in their catalog. Truly, a work of art.
