for all the people out there that say karates week or doesnt work spend 30 seconds on the floor with Nate Scarano.. please i dare you! hes also one of the nicest guys ul ever meet unless you meet him in the ring!
love it, makes WKF look crap even though i do enjoy watching, ive tried to do this sweep many times and got impatient and thought the chances of me getting this and scoring is a lot less likeley than if i worked on movement (i.E moving round my opponent or breaking kine and so on) but i may have to go back and try again and try to master this as best i can, thankyou sensei.
Pretty amazing style he's got. Aggressive and perfectly suited to match his physicality. Just when he looks like he's gonna lose his balance and dump it, that's when he steamrolls the other fella. The best is 3:34 when he misses the sweep and shuffles in that perfect side kick to the head. Very shiny indeed. It's the kind of thing one expects to see aikijujutsu guy or a judoka throwing in a tourney, not shotokan guy. I always think of them as punchers and kickers in the strictest sense.
Awesome.... I used this during this past weekends sparring.. Took Shotokan 20 years ago, now Muay Thai and MMA sparring.. I was doing it with a leg capture I like this way alot better, just step and kick... Great Job..
i have this video from those days... good to see it still works..i use it down hear all the time.. Thank you Shihan Nathan Scarano...aka Nat Dawg..i love and miss you brother!!!! if i have the same video i seen david and allen...great video...i remember like it was yesterday...OUS!!!

THis is REAL KARATE basic on shotokan Excellent and perfect kuzushi leg sweep. this is a good lessons for all the shotokan haters.and ippon system. Thanks and some more pleace .OSS.jka Belgium.
@patrickdarcy - I trained with Nathan for years. That has nothing to do with his attitude....it's all about being in the heat of the battle. I assume you've never experienced this. Quite simply.....if you don't know the person, don't make assumptions their personality based on a 7 minute montage of tournament clips.
Thank you sensei, I wish that more karate-ka wouldn't take this video at face value. We all sign the wavier when we enter the tournament, therefore, it's a sanction fight. Every person has the ability to inflict minor or major injure. Sensei Yahara: "Karate is not sport, game, or philosophy. Karate is to knock my opponent out, due to the use of one Finishing Blow." What is shown is NOT EGO but the joy of survival and competition. Rethink your thoughts when you comment. Ossu!
Every time I saw the sweep and the celebration in this video, I though of Micheal Jordan shooting that game winning shot or when Lyoto Machida won the the UFC championship! All these victories have more than one thing in common, but the most important ~ they weren't shy in there victory. If there were more competitors, I bet Ippon Shobu or WKF style karate would be one of the top sports in America! Thank you sensei for the video! Emotion is the key to life! Ossu!

@patrickdarcy I agree. I'm all for fighting spirit, in fact i favour the karateka with the most spirit...especially in competition karate. However bouncing around after scoring on ones opponent is terrible ettiquette. Victory without humility is no real victory, as you're simply allowing your ego 'run the show'.
Shame about the disappointing attitude as there were some sweet ashi's in there. On youtube i'd rather watch Elwyn Hall - no disgraceful displays of arrogance.
@zealotnut I have seen every type of karate from the perspective of a child to an adult. What you say is true when you are referring to teaching children good sportsmanship. However, what you and others can't seem to grasp the joy of being alive. Every sport has there victory dance (UFC). Every ADULT oriented sport has the karate spirit of doing ones best. The Sensei displayed etiquette, intensity, and control in accordance to the sport. You can have honor and still be happy to win. Ossu!

5:00-5:15 is my favorite part, slo-mo of how his competitor was in his stance and Sensei Scarano still swept him AMAZING!
