Horatio Hornblower vs. Napoleon Bonaparte.... ohhh lordy, lordy,lordy....if only Mr. Hornblower was ever a factual real person, and replaced the Duke of Wellington as Captain Hornyblower for the English Campaigns at Waterloo and onward to Paris, this would be the battle of Legends and folklore and yadyadyada.
Suit me just fine if GB broke up. There's no reason it all has to be the same country, English are not Manx or Welsh or Irish or Scots. Only one of those groups is even historically English-speaking. English is an introduced language to all the rest. I grow tired of cultural Borgs, lemme tell ya. I love this series, though. Good story to go along with the eye candy.
HORATIO HORNBLOWER!!! AND MR. BALLS! ahah my history teacher in 8th grade had us watch this and we couldnt stop laughing. ,mainly for the retarded names, and the fact that there was a giant spitwad in the middle of the Tv screen. haha
@MsTimelady71 Too true....the programming at A&E has gone to hell! Whatever happended to all the quality shows? I watched Horatio with my son who was 18 at the time and we both thoroughly enjoyed it! =)
@MsTimelady71 Ms. From what I've read Ioan wants to do Hornblower as he ages and I'd love to see that. He said that he'd be willing to help produce it if I remember correctly and has been pushing for it. I really hope the BBC will consider it as popular as this series was and still is. I don't know how many times I've watched it since I discoverd it a few weeks ago. Why wouldn't they keep it going? Surely it would pay for itself easily. He's getting older BBC! A thumbs up if you agree please.
You wankers, 1793? England? WTF? No Britain? No Scots to win your battles for you? No Scots to invent everythinjg from MEDICINE to BREECH-LOADING RIFLES? Read history BRAMBLEFOX!!!!!!
@locheelad2 You WANKER! It wasn't until 1930's that Scotland disagreed with England being known for the whole of GB. LEARN YOUR HISTORY SON! And, by the way, Britian is only Wales and England. Great Britian is Scotland included. UK also includes N.Ire and The British Isles is everything, including ROI. So, learn before you speak. As I said, it was NOT until much later it was politically incorrect for GB to be known as England.
@iago18958 Actually, that's a common misconception. Firstly official laws and treaties drafted after 1707 referto the entire kingdom as a variety of names, notably never just England. Brittia appears as a name for Great Britain in Procopius which was used by the 6th-century population of the Netherlands. Also it should further be noted Britannia is derived from the travel writings of Pytheas around 320 BC, which describe various islands as Britannia.
@iago18958 The original word for Britain serves as a source for the Goidelic term Cruithne and was used to refer to the early Brythonic-speaking inhabitants of the north of Scotland. Using Britain to simply mean England and Wales is unheard of. "It wasn't until 1930's that Scotland disagreed with England" There is no justification, evidence or scenario that validates that claim, indeed Scotland and England were known as North and South Britain for a period of time, this passed from use.
i like films that start with they hate him hes a joke then he makes them admire him yeah like that...just like sharpe good stuff we brits sure do it right
Ah! Excellent upload! I absolutely adore this series, just bought the first four episodes and have been obsessing over them for ages. Thanks so much for uploading! I've only read two of the books so far -- I shall have to catch up :) This is possibly my favourite and least favourite episode: I love it, but it's got Simpson ... (I was watching with a friend and I had my face buried in her shoulder half the time that S was on screen ... )
Hemingway and Churchill admired the books; now let me find out for myself. I have looked for Hornblower stuff for a long while, and I am delighted that you have posted these.
I didn't know that hornblower was posted on youtube, I just got the movies from the library. Great series, thanks for posting, and you guys should check ou the sharpe series.
@nancysinatra88 I certainly agree with you Nancy about the quality of the pictures. I often think of that while I watch them. So clear and the photography is a work of art. BBC needs to keep this going with Ioan being an Admiral or whatever he'd be at his age. Of course he advanced early so maybe he'd be Prime Minister by now. lol You know what I mean tho'. Ioan wants to do it and has been pushing for it as I said in another comment. Come on BBC before he gets too old! And the others.
Oh? Well, considering that England was the most powerful country in Great Britian at the time, it might have been just England. If you'll recall, the Irish tended to be friendly to France throughout the turbulant years from the Revolution through the Napoleonic era.
Great Britain didn't work like that with one monarch, one government and one armed forces, it's all of Britain or none and on your last point, simply, Ireland was not a part of Great Britain in 1793... I may seem to be over-reacting just it irritates me when people ignore the past out of ignorance. Imagine GB as the US with its state system.
England was the honor word. Like to say" England and home"even if your from
someplace other than england because
everyone knew england. ask someone where the queen lives and they will say england not great Briton. its the English army. not the great briton army. its just
easy to say England but your right it's Great Briton the empire
Actually... it IS the British Army and it has been for centuries. I'm just saying the correct name is Britain. Look up on the British Army you'll see my point.
@mrgeorgeallison England was classed as GB then. It wasn't until the 1930's when Scotland wanted independance that it all changed and GB was Scotland, Wales and England. But back then, it was commonly shorted to England.
Awesome! Also wanted to suggest Patrick O'Brian's nautical series, very good reading and the movie wasn't bad. Also, read up on a real "Horatio Hornblower" that being Lord Cochrane as his real life exploits were simply amazing.
Thank you! I've read the books and finally got the whole series a little over a month ago (which goes to say how obsessed I can be with Hornblower...)
I'm planning on it. The reason why it's taking me so long to upload them is because it takes nearly an hour for each section to load...so it'll probably be a few weeks before I can get them all up. :)
What is going on? I can't pull up episodes.
