@VladimirScarf get a longer thumb... the best i can give u is, put a clamp on it..not a capo, that will add to much pressure and it takes the whole neck, find something thats small and only does the 6th string

luka is right, the chord is an Fmaj7 and without that open E it wouldn't sound right. Try getting your thumb around just enough to make a clean sound on the first string. Then place the other fingers to make the cord. It will get easier.

many people on here seem to be having trouble with this but it's either wrong positioning of your hand or you just need to get used to playing it that way... keep practicing :)

yes because it's easier to convert to the next chord. also, if you bar the F your picking melody will be off as some of the strings need to stay open. if you look at some videos of lifehouse playing this song live, you'll see that this is exactly how the lead singer plays the song. i've also gotten used to playing the F this way. I play it the same way in "Broken" for example... you rarely use bar chords for finger picked songs. i actually find the barred F more difficult to play :P

Ah i see i see. My fingers are sort of short for my age so my thumb hardly reaches that string so it bothers me a bit so i try barring the chord, but then i notice myself playing the song incredibly slower so i guess I'll just have to train my thumb to hold down the string.

yeah just keep practicing. I have trouble with certain chords too but the only way to get it right is to keep playing those problematic chords and forcing yourself to play them. I personally hate the Bb chord :P keep practicing and you'll get it right :) cheers

trust me, keep practicing and you will be able to do it. i dont have big hands and i can play it fine... its a matter of practice. also, you can put the capo on any fret you want. as long as the finger positions stay the same it will still sound the same, just in a higher key :P

I've heard some people say that about that F. I actually find it easier to play than the barred version of the F chord. It's a matter of practice really. Keep trying to do it, and then you will get better at it. Also it's not really about the size of your hands, it's more about the position of your hand and the stretchability of your fingers... which again, is a matter of practice. the more you play the more flexible you get. You cannot play this song correctly with the barred F unfortunately.

I have an idea to help you - notice that through almost the entire song, only one note (the first fret) is played on the B string. If you tune the B string half a step up, you wont have to stretch. You can just play it loose.

Only one time during the chorus, is the B string played loose, and here you can just play the note on the G string 4th fret.
