Dies irae, dies illa, dies tribulationis et angustiae, dies calamitatis et miseriae, dies tenebrarum et caliginis, dies nebulae et turbinis, dies tubae et clangoris super civitates munitas et super angulos excelsos.
Another performance (live and although somewhat lacklustre at times on the orchestra's part) available at this time on YouTube (James Edward Gardner conducting) at over 24 minutes is REALLY slow, yet the tempo doesn't feel bad in the main section! [Alas, by blocking me over minor things, he showed just how ultra-sensitive if not over-egotistical he is!]
There is brutality, and then there is brutality: Gjérgijev has the wrong type in it, compared to Ashkenazy, with all due respect!
Gjérgijev in this music misses a lot of the subtleties and atmosphere that Ashkenazy captures 25 years ago on his Decca/London recording with the Amsterday Concertgebouw. It even feels brashly BRUTAL - OK with Prokófjjev or perhaps Shostakóvich but definitely out of place with the openly Late-Romantic Rakhmáñinov!!! All the wonderful playing of the Vienna Philharmonic can't gloss over this interpretation being simply PLAIN WRONG!!!!
C-
At least the audience is wonderfully well-behaved!!
@arabesque1981: If you think Ashkenazy is too slow, try Gielen's reading (alas, no longer present on YouTube) or Gardner. That one's marginally slower (I hope one day to hear Priwin {Prévin} to see how he does things - based on his recording of the 2nd Symphony of the same composer, it well could be magisterial!), and although it misses a few of the points Ashkenazy catches, it actually isn't bad either...
Either way, we may have to agree to disagree ("v'kús i cvjet továrishchi ñet").

Also a strong strike against this broadcast is the way the breaks are placed, with no real caring about interrupting the actual musical flow!!!
All in all, rather disappointing. Three stars out of five (2.5 even/5, rounded to 3...).
