Ditto on the comment about skinning the head. I also watched your Beaver skinning video and had the same problem. Once I got to the head I just screwed it up. If you could do a "close up" of the process around the heads it would be great.
I found a very fresh raccoon roadkill this morning and stopped to grab it. I was gonna load it in the trunk to take home but decided to leave it , realizing I have no experience butchering a coon. After watching this, I regret that I left that coon for the vultures!
Thank you for posting this video. Is this how I would skin all trapped critters? Also, is this how you bring the hide into the buyers? Do you need to cure it first or sell it green? Thanks for any help!
your 3 year old video helped me out today. I shot a male raccoon out of a tree and skinned him. I had never skinned anything before either. It turned out decent for going slow for a couple hours. All I used was my small buck knife!. Sure I screwed up the tail I wish I had the tail zip but I had to work with what I had. Hung him on para cord and did the job. Not bad for a Californian who lived in the suburbs most of his life but loves the country. :D Missouri is a beautiful place!
alright, so I live in Oregon, and we have ALOT of raccoons around here. I've been getting pretty sick and tired of them showing up on the porch at night eating the cat food, so I decided one night to sit on the porch with a 9mm and shoot the living hell out of them. I let my rottwieler finish the last one off, since it ran. we had fun. so I watched your video, and skinned the one without the bullet holes. What do I need to do to the fur now?
preparing raccoon is dangerous ,, need to wear gloves.. cause it might contain rabies .. but eating it its very safe once cooked ..alot cooks in Asia catch rabies because of these dishes ..
i came up on the first raccoon i ever caught in a trap a couple weeks agon and it was calm until i picked up the trap and my pitbull tried to get through the cage
good video, i just started trapping, sent ya a friends request, if ya dont mind send me a message and let me know what kinda traps ya use, i just got a few from tractor supply but their kinda aggravating sometimes to get them to stay set.
@bogeygolfer1970 buy some 2-20 conibears and son 1-10 for muskrats and other truck that goes with it. then go find a likely older man and ask him if he knows anything about trapping. and if so buy him lunch and talk about it he'll probably fill you in on how to do it
@cianw10 I personally dont. No way in heck I would eat it unless I was starving. I do have people that I give the carcass to that eat them. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
i live in uk but i thought that racoons are basically giant rats? i mean like they carry loads of diseases and are full of nits etc. so why would you want to skin it? (sorry if i sound naive)
@cianw10 All wild animals have the ability to carry nasty diseases. Thats why I always use gloves and will lysol and bleach down all my equipment after I skin. Im at the point now that I will also wear a painters mask and glasses when skinning so I dont flick anything into my mouth or eyes.
I just skinned my first coon and your method worked great! but once i got to the head i couldnt skin it so i just cut it at the neck so if you could make a video on how to skin around the head or explain how to that would be great! thanks again for the video
hey nice vid. but i have 1 question, my dad lent out our coon hanger to someone and cant remeber who it was, so i want to buy a new one, where can i get one? did you buy that or make it, please help!
Go to Minnesota Trap Supplies website and look up there chain skinning gambrel. Works really good. Pay attention to my page later this year, I will have more skinning videos up.

BTW: I've found the best coon bait to be a rice crispy treat with dog kibbles in it. Skunks, possums and cats ignore it, but raccoons can't leave it alone.
Try using a drop point or stiletto blade, the point gets between the skin and meat better,as for the tail I use two round shaft flat tip screwdrivers, the flat tip of one held flat against the handle of the other. A stronger branch would be nice too I use the rail of my overhead door.
gosh darnit i skinned a coon and it took me like thirty minutes cause that was the first coon i every skinned it actually didnt look that bad ethier. nice vid by the way

I've heard of a tail zipper before. What is it exactly, and where'd you get it?
wolfforce58205 1 year ago
@wolfforce58205 you can get a tail zipper at most trapping supply stores. The tail zipper is use to split the tail after the bone has been removed.

Aren't you worried about Rabies, ticks, fleas transferable through blood and fur contact?
I was told that you must spray "Raid" on a coon fur before skinning it to prevent the ticks and fleas from coming onto the person.
